Burlington gets past Triton 2-1 to reach D2 North softball semifinals

Christina Clark slides home with the second Burlington run as catcher Liv Doane waits for the ball to arrive

Christina Clark pitched a one-hitter with nine strikeouts

(Byfield MA) A year ago Burlington’s Christina Clark struck out seventeen Triton Vikings on her way to a 9-0 first round win in the D2 North softball tournament.

With that in the back of my head, I went over to Triton today wondering what to expect a year later in a quarterfinals matchup between the same two teams.

Burlington (17-4) prevailed, 2-1, on a beautiful Sunday afternoon and will go on to face Gloucester in the D2 North semifinals.

As far as pitcher Christina Clark is concerned, she’s still an overwhelming presence.  Today she recorded nine strikeouts and allowed only one hit.  The Vikings had only three baserunners and little good contact off the junior.

“When it comes to softball it’s all about pitching,” said Triton coach Dave Dupere afterwards. “Their pitcher (Christina Clark) was tough to hit.  She hit her spots, changed speed and had a good curve ball.  We don’t see her speed very often.”

“Christina did well today getting ahead of hitters,” said Burlington coach Kristen Farrell.” Even the balls they put in play weren’t necessarily hit hard.”

Katherine Quigley allowed five hits and one earned run

Lost in the deserved excitement over the pitching of Christina Clark was Katherine Quigley’s performance for the (17-3) Vikings.  The sophomore limited the Devils to five hits and retired the last eight batters she faced.

“It was huge for us to do so much better than last time against them,” said Katherine.  “I felt that I threw a lot harder today than I did in the win over Saugus.  I was more confident and relaxed today.”

Christina Clark retired the last eleven Vikings she faced.  “I was feeling the energy of the team as the game went on,” said Christina.  “I knew that I had a great defense behind me.”

The Devils had only one error (3B Sydney Shinopulos throw) and Triton turned it into a run in the second inning.  Bridget Sheehan walked and reached 3B when Sydney’s attempt to turn a grounder into a force-out went past second allowing Bridget to reach third with one out.  Senior Liv Doane’s slow roller to second enabled Bridget to score.

Erin Browne steals second as Emily Karvielis takes the throw

Burlington came back to tie the game in the top of the third inning.  Erin Browne’s bunt (down the first baseline) forced a wide throw by catcher Liv Doane.  Erin stole second with two outs and came home on Chloe McGonagle’s single to right.

The visitors put together the eventual game winner in their half of the 4th.  Christina Clark reached on a leadoff blooper over third base.  Fran Rubino sacrificed Christina to second before freshman Sydney Shinopulos dropped an 0-2 single into right scoring Christina.  Christina slid in but as my picture above shows she was in well ahead of the throw.

“Getting a runner in scoring position with Chloe up or Sydney up, you know things could happen,” said Coach Farrell.  “We have not had a lot of timely hitting this season.”

The improved defense was a factor for Triton in their very successful season. LF Grace McGonagle made several nice running catches for the Vikings.  “Our defense was lights out again,” said Coach Dupere.

Shortstop Bridget Sheehan squeezes a popup

Both Coach Farrell and Christina Clark commended Triton.

“Triton hung tough,” said Coach Farrell.
Much improved over last year.”

“This was a very different game than last year,” said Christina. “They had a good defense.”

The Devils now return again to the D2 North semifinals and will face Gloucester on Wednesday in Lowell.  North Reading will also be in the semifinals at the same place and on the same date.

Burlington line of defense

Encouraging for Triton that the three losses this season were against two teams (North Reading & Burlington) which have now reached the D2 North semifinals.

“Burlington was probably the best team we’ve faced all year and we probably played our best game of the year,” recalled Coach Dupere.

Coach Dupere: “Katherine (Quigley) changed her speeds.  She’s got three different speeds.  She’s tough to hit.”

Coach Farrell: “Any win in the postseason is a good win.  Our defense was solid, and our pitcher had a really great game.  She had big strikeouts when we needed them.”

Coach Dupere: “I came into this season with high expectations, but the girls exceeded them.  We’re losing four important seniors, but we have the nucleus back and we have some good players coming up.  We’re going to be a force to be reckoned with next year.”

Plenty of sunshine today but the game was so quick that the tanning/burning was limited!

Sydney Shinopulos (batting) drove in the eventual game winner in the 4th inning

If I could give Triton softball two pieces of advice they would be these: Schedule twenty games instead of eighteen.  Seventeen days off before the playoffs is unconscionable.  The other thing would be to get a perennial tournament team like St.Mary’s, Burlington, Whittier on the schedule to prep Triton for tournament pitching and hitting.

Nice to see some of the Pentucket players on hand.  They lost in the first round to Burlington, 5-1.

Burlington has been the champs of the Middlesex League for seven straight years.

Sophomore Chloe McGonagle was the only player with two hits in the game.

Burlington holds off Tewksbury 6-5 to take Division 2 North softball title

Burlington - Division 2 North softball champions

Burlington – Division 2 North softball champions

(Lowell)  Burlington (21-3) built up a 6-1 lead after four innings and hung on for dear life as Tewksbury (17-7) came at them late on Monday afternoon at UM Lowell‘s River View Field.

The Red Devils survived, 6-5, and are the Division 2 North champs.  They will face D2 South champs Bishop Stang on Wednesday (6PM) at Martin Field in Lowell in the state semi-finals.  The title game is scheduled for Saturday.

The Redmen looked done in trailing by four in the drizzle of the top of the seventh.  However, a near-disastrous Burlington mix of walks (2), hits (2), and throwing errors (2) garnered three of the runs Tewksbury needed to even things.

Catcher Krista Toscano eyes the final out as Meaghan McLaughlin runs for the plate

Senior Meaghan McLaughlin stood on third representing the tying run with two outs but with the season on the line Burlington pitcher senior Kelly McCarthy got sophomore Jessica Silva to pop out to junior catcher Krista Toscano to record the final out.

Melissa Cordwell heads home with the fifth Redman run on an overthrow in the 7th inning.

Yes, it was exciting.  Certainly more so with those in the UMass Lowell stands with a horse in the race.

Tewksbury (Merrimac Valley League) scored their first run in the third inning.  Senior Tiffanie Marsh doubled home senior Sam LaFerriare who had tripled.  Second baseman sophomore Michaela Mazure saved a second run later in the inning robbing senior Melissa Cordwell on a hot grounder.

Burlington (Middlesex League) answered with four runs batting around in their half of the third inning.  Michaela Mazure hit a two-run double over Erin Walsh’s head in left.  Sophomore Kaela Hersee and Kelly McCarthy also had RBI for the Red Devils.  Burlington had runners on second and third as the inning ended with senior Amy Hunter popping out.

costly throw to first

costly throw to first

Tewksbury will not have fond memories of the two-run Burlington 4th.  A throwing error (3B freshman Kirsten Dick) and a bad decision (1B Melissa Cordwell) opened the door for both runs.  After junior Sheldon Kayla singled (she had three hits), senior Danielle Coveno’s bunt was thrown past first and ended up in the right field corner.  Sheldon was able to score and Danielle reached third on the play.  Next batter junior April Adams grounded to first as Danielle broke for the plate.  I heard the Tewksbury coach yell to throw it home, and from where I was standing (next to the Tewksbury dugout), the chance of getting the runner was high.  But the runner going to first was tagged out and the opportunity for a play at the plate was lost.  Those two Burlington runs turned out to be awfully significant.

Brooke Hardy

Brooke Hardy

Tewksbury put three singles (junior Brooke Hardy, junior Shannon McLaughlin, Melissa Cordwell) together to get a run in their half of the fifth.  Nice catch of a foul popup by 3B senior Haley Currie during that inning.

Then came the Tewksbury 7th.  I briefly described the inning earlier.  Here are the specifics.  The inning started with a walk by Sam LaFerriere (Nora Butler pinchran) and a long double by Tiffanie Marsh to the base of the screen in center.

Next, Michaela Mazure caught Shannon McLaughlin’s liner but then, trying for a double play, threw the ball past third allowing Nora Butler to score T’s 3rd run.  Tiffanie reached third on that play.

A ball-four wild pitch enabled Tiffanie Marsh to cross with T’s 4th run.

With Melissa Cordwell on first with the walk the Red Devils got Erin Walsh to pop to second for the second out.

Meaghan McLaughlin singled to right.  Melissa Cordwell headed for third and RF Danielle Coveno made a throw to get her.  The throw went past 3B Haley Currie allowing Melissa Cordwell to score (Run #5) and Meaghan McLaughlin to get to third.

That set the stage for the final-out popup to catcher Krista Toscano.

Shannon McLaughlin lobs to first

Shannon McLaughlin lobs to first

Burlington had eight hits off Shannon McLaughlin – three by Kayla Sheldon and two by Kaela Hersee.

Tewksbury had nine hits off Kelly McCarthy – two each by Tiffanie Marsh and Meaghan McLaughlin.

Burlington had four errors including two in the exciting 7th inning.

Tewksbury stranded nine runners while Burlington stranded six runners.

Burlington has now won ten of their last eleven games.  The Red Devils lost to Wahconah in the state title game in 2011.  Five years ago Burlington had a winless season.

Part of the Burlington success versus Tewksbury was in keeping Brooke Hardy under control.  Brooke scored all three Redmen runs in their 3-1 semi-finals win over Reading.  She had an inside-the-park homer in that game.  Brooke has already committed to play for the D1 Jacksonville Dolphins in 2014.

Mark Melanson (17 points) Leads Burlington Boys Past Salem 69-64 in Division 2 North

Mark Melanson (17 points) clinches the Burlington win with two free throws with 2.9 seconds left in front of a stunned Salem student section.

Mark Melanson bothers Dario Medrano on his late layup attempt.

(Salem) Mark Melanson came up huge in the last twenty-six seconds and led Burlington (#12 seed) past the host Salem Witches (#5 seed), 69-64, in the first round of the Division 2 North.

This was a game in which neither team passed a chance to launch from long range.  I counted sixty-one 3-point attempts!

The crowd saw a fast-paced game with the final outcome uncertain until late in the last minute.

Burlington’s Ryan Putney got into the lane for a game-tying (64-64) layup with twenty-six seconds left.  After a Salem timeout, Mark Melanson came up with three crucial plays.

(1) When Salem broke through Burlington pressure, Dario Medrano went in for a go-ahead, layup attempt.  Mark was close by (note the picture) and harassed Dario into a miss without fouling.

(2) Going the other way against Salem pressure, Burlington broke through and Mark was located by Ryan Putney in the corner in front of the Burlington bench.  He drilled a three from there to give the Red Devils a 67-64 lead with nine seconds left.

Antonio Reyes sets for a late-game three with Connor Gallivan (#3) defending.

(3) After an Antonio Reyes attempt to tie, Mark grabbed the rebound, got fouled, and drained two free throws in front of a stunned Salem crowd to seal the win with 2.9 seconds left.

Salem (15-6) came into the final two minutes of the game with a 2-point (64-62) lead but came up empty on five straight possessions.  You kept waiting for a three to drop for them but they had nothing to show for nine tries in the last quarter.

One mystery I solved before the game related to Zach Hurynowicz.  Zach reached 1000 points for the Devils this season.  He was a preseason 3rd team player according to ESPN.  He had a remarkable 48 point game in January against Woburn.  He was averaging close to 20 points per game.  He was also sitting on the bench in a recent game with no explanation for the reason in the article including that information.  I’m thinking injury and I’m wondering how serious.  I pick up a program as I enter the Salem gymnasium and Zach isn’t even on the roster.  Now I’m really wondering.  I find someone with a Burlington athletic jacket on and get the full scoop – Zach is off the team because of grades.

Minus Zach, I liked Salem chances.

Sometimes, however, when a key player is missing, others step up.  And that’s what happened with Burlington.

After Salem jumped off to a quick 6-3 lead on two Antonio Reyes 3’s, the Devils cranked up their defense (Salem had one basket in their next sixteen possessions) while on offense Burlington went on an 16-2 run.  Mark Melanson had two 3’s and Greg Sheridan had one as part of this run.

Burlington led 18-10 after a quarter.

Raphy Medrano (21 points) launches a three over Ryan Putney (#23).

In the second quarter, Raphy Medrano got so hot (made four 3’s) that I thought I’d see the fire marshal at any moment!  Raphy was key in twelve straight Salem points and the Witches went up, 28-23, with 4 ½ minutes left in the quarter.

Salem had a one-point (34-33) lead at the half.

I suspected at halftime that three-point shots would be crucial the rest of the way.  Having seen Salem twice, I figured that they were the likely team to cash in the most from long range.  I sure got that wrong!  The Witches were 3-for-17 in the second half while Burlington was a sizzling 6-for-11.

The Devils put together 2 ½ minutes of unanswered offense (nine straight) and pulled away, 53-47, with a minute left in the third quarter.  Burlington got inside for three layups (Joe Renaud, Ryan Putney, Shane Farley) and also had a three from Shane.

A last-second three (Dario Medrano) narrowed Burlington’s lead at the end of the third quarter to, 53-50.

Salem put together a 12-2 spurt early in the final quarter and went up by four (62-58) with 4 ½ minutes left.  A key play there was a steal by Antonio Reyes that he turned into a layup down the other end.  Chants of “MVP, MVP” rang out from the Salem student section after that play.

The Devils got inside twice to Joe Renaud to tie the score before Antonio Reyes and Ryan Putney traded baskets.  This set the stage for the final twenty-six seconds and the Mark Melanson heroics.

Raphy Medrano (21 points) led all scorers.  He made five 3’s.

Mark Melanson (17 points) also had five 3’s.

Antonio Reyes – One of the North Shore’s best over the last three seasons.

Antonio Reyes (15 points) hit his first two shots from long distance and never made another one the rest of the way.  I suspect that many of the Salem faithful were as surprised as I was by that.

Ryan Putney (13 points) was isolated late and got into the lane for the tying layup in the last minute.

The sudden end for Salem was a surprise after they won the Division 2 North last year.  They are also graduating Antonio Reyes, Brad Skeffington, and the Medranos.

The Witches, out of the Northeastern Conference (North), ended up losing five of their last six games.

I have watched Antonio Reyes play for three seasons.  With the body of a linebacker (his position on the Salem football team) and a sizable collection of moves and shots, he was a special player.

Burlington (13-8) gets to continue their season against the winner of the Marblehead/Boston Latin Academy game.

( I collect my own stats, take my own pictures, and draw my own conclusions.  Mistakes are unintentional. )
