Late goal gets Lake Region past Gray-New Gloucester 4-3 in Western Maine Conference Class B girls soccer

(Naples ME) The Lake Region Lakers girls soccer team defeated the Gray-New Gloucester Patriots, 4-3, on a controversial goal with 23 seconds left on Friday night in Western Maine Conference action.

Sophomore Kristen Huntress ripped home the game-winner after a collision and a turnover gave her a wide-open, close-in, look.

GNG coach Kiaran McCormack protested the goal vehemently enough to draw a yellow card.  He could have been complaining about the collision between the Lakers’ Melody Millett and the Patriots’ Izzy Detroy that put Kristen Huntress into glorious scoring position or the apparent off-sides by at least two Lakers.  Take your pick.  They both appeared to have credence but on this night play continued and the excited Lakers had a very happy ending.

The wind was a factor in this game.  GNG (2 goals) had it in the first half and the Lakers (3 goals) in the second.

Junior Maddie Simms registered a hat trick for LR.  Her third goal put the home team ahead 3-2 with 12 1/2 minutes left in the game.  That lead looked like it might hold up but with 1:25 to go, freshman Emma Woods beat Lakers GK Isabel Scribner to the ball and tied the score.  It was Emma’s second goal of the game and 5th of the season.

The Patriots celebrate the tying goal with 1:25 left in the game.

And again that goal looked like it would hold up but the Lakers pressure produced the game-winner by Kristen Huntress just over a minute later.

The Patriots (1-2) had a bunch of chances in the first half led by sophomore Kaelyn Woods.

The most dangerous player for the Patriots, in my opinion, was senior Maria Valente.  It was her throw-ins that were so amazing.  She put several long-distance tosses into the box setting up scoring chances.  Sarah Giggey capitalized on one of Maria’s throw-ins in the first half to give GNG a 2-1 lead.

Maria Valente had an assist on a throw-in

The Patriots hit the crossbar in each half.

Kristen Huntress had a great look at a straightaway shot that sailed just over the crossbar in the second half.

The Lakers (2-1) are off to a surprising start.  Last season LR won only two games all season.  Last season LR scored a total of eleven goals.  Already they have six.  It certainly has helped the Lakers to start the season with three straight home games.  Can they do as well away from home?

Sophomore Melody Millett had assists on the first and fourth Lakers’ goals.

A big part of the Lakers’ early success has been the quality defensive play of Devynn Turner and Katie Throgmorton.  Their decision making has been solid.

Lakers’ GK Isabel Scribner continued with her very aggressive style.  Despite being burned twice taking chances, she robbed the visitors several times using the same approach.  Fun to watch but I’m not sure what it does for the LR coaching staffs’ heart rate!

Lake Region girls blank Wells 2-0 in Western Maine Conference soccer

(Naples ME)  Lake Region blanked Wells, 2-0, in girls’ soccer on a comfortably cool Tuesday night under the lights.

The Lakers (1-1) had goals in each half (Megan Boos & CeCe Hancock) and eye-catching goaltending (Isabel Scribner) in the Western Maine Conference Class B matchup.

Sophomore Kaylyn Jordan recorded assists on both of the Lakers’ goals.

Senior GK Isabel Scribner set the defensive tone by getting out and after every ball anywhere near the goal.  There was no sitting back waiting for her teammates to clear balls away.  There were some dangerous moments but on this evening Isabel’s approach keyed the LR shutout.

Ali Duplisea

Ali Duplisea

The best chances for Wells (0-2) were in the second half.  In one of the chances, sophomore Aimely Nolan couldn’t quite find the handle after a shot had gotten away from Isabel.  Another time, senior Ali Duplisea flew over Isabel after nearly winning a race to the ball in close.

Sophomore Megan Boos had a big first half for Lake Region.  (I don’t recall seeing her play in the 2-0 Lakers loss to York.)  Early in the half, Megan set up teammate CeCe Hancock for a scoring chance and later almost scored on a long shot from the right.

In between those near-goals, Megan tallied her first goal of the season.  Megan was facing the Wells goal on the left when her sophomore teammate Kaylyn Jordan took a long shot from the right.  Wells GK Natalie Thurber was covering the near post as the shot came through and went all the way across to the other side of the goal.  Megan came in from the left side unguarded and tapped in as easy a shot as you could ever dream of.

This first LR goal happened with 17:05 left in the first half.

Nine-plus minutes into the second half, the Lakers struck again.  Kaylyn Jordan passed into the middle to junior CeCe Hancock.  CeCe was usually heavily-guarded wherever she went, but on this occasion she was able to dribble into wide open space straightaway.  Her hard, high shot went in untouched by Wells GK Natalie Thurber.

Lake Region suffered through a 2-9-3 season in 2013 so they seemed to be pretty excited to get that first win so early in this season.  Last year the Lakers only scored eleven times, so to get two versus the Warriors was special.

Wells couldn’t finish on this evening but seniors Ali Duplisea, Maddie Taylor, and Betsy Andrews had solid games for the Warriors.

Juniors Katie Throgmorton and Devynn Turner, as well as freshman Lauren Jakobs, helped LR dominate the middle of the field.

Wells will be hosting Freeport on Thursday (6PM) while Lake Region hosts Gray-New Gloucester at the same time on Friday.

The Lakers have defeated Wells in three of the last four years.

Wells was 6-7-1 last year.  They have ten seniors on this year’s team.

York shuts out Lake Region 2-0 in Class B girls soccer opener

(Naples ME)  The York Wildcats girls’ soccer team had a goal in each half and won their season opener, 2-0, over Lake Region on very warm Friday afternoon.

This was a Class B matchup in the Western Maine Conference.

The Wildcats had more than a few excellent chances against Lakers’ goalie Isabel Scribner but the senior GK was terrific despite the two goals allowed.

York passed well and had the Lakers chasing them on an afternoon in the mid-80’s.  No question fatigue was a factor for the home team.

A great pass led to the first York goal by sophomore Maddie Amidon late (6:46) in the first half.  Junior Lindsey Cole came in on the right side and didn’t force a shot instead spotted Maddie Amidon wide open in close.  Maddie had a chance to stop the ball and put a hard shot by Isabel Scribner with her left foot.

The other goal was scored two minutes into the second half by Elaine Cavalieri.  The senior came in on the right side, getting past defender Grace Farrington, and then cut back into the middle to get off the shot with several Lakers nearby.

The Lakers had trouble getting into scoring position.  In the first half the Wildcats forced offsides on several promising LR opportunities.

The Lakers had several direct kicks but couldn’t get the shots on need.  Most of the chances dealt with by York goalies Emma Rohrer and Kelsey Cole were from long range.

One eye-catcher for the Lakers was CeCe Hancock.  The energetic junior did not have a lot of space to operate in but on several occasions was able to dribble by defenders.

Despite the two goals Lakers GK Isabel Scribner made some terrific saves

Maddie Amidon scored a goal against Lake Region last year.

Last year the Lakers scored only eleven goals in the 14-game season.

The Wildcats were state champs in 2007 and 2009.

Lakers Isabel Scribner, Katie Throgmorton, and Devynn Turner were honored by the Western Maine Conference last season.

Both teams graduated four seniors from their 2013 teams.

Sierra Swasey notched two goals last season versus Lake Region.  One was on a penalty kick.

I think that Lake Region has enough defense to at least match the six-win season they had in 2011.  The defense on this day played a lot of minutes in some tough heat.

Sierra Swasey and Shannon Todd were excellent in the middle of the field.  Both also created good scoring chances for themselves.

Bethanie Knighton and Will Shafer win in cross country meet swept by Freeport

Will Shafer (15:50)

(Naples ME)  Freeport put five runners in the first seven spots in both the boys and girls races and easily defeated Kennebunk, Gray New Gloucester, and Lake Region on Friday afternoon in cross country.

Will Shafer of GNG Patriots continues to win every race he enters.  The senior led the four-team field from beginning to end on the 2.9 mile course.  This is the second time Will has won this season at Lake Region.

Teammate Ben Garcia hung with Will in the early going but the sophomore faded in the second half allowing another sophomore (Freeport’s Chandler Vincent) to get second.

Laura Broderick (K) is ahead of Bethanie Knighton in the early going

Laura Broderick (K) is ahead of Bethanie Knighton in the early going

On the girls’ side, Laura Broderick of Kennebunk had the early lead until the first trip around a field hockey game.  Bethanie Knighton of Freeport came into that section in second but came out with the lead.  The Falcon senior led thereafter.

Missing from the girls action were Sydney Ambrose (Freeport) and Audrey Blais (Lake Region).  Sydney rolled an ankle the day after the last meet in practice.  Audrey has a sore back.  Both expect to be available for their next meets.

Sydney was the MVP of the Falcons field hockey team in 2012.  She decided to make a very good girls cross country team even better.  Sydney has already won a race this year and I suspect would have been in contention to win this race if available.

In the boys race, Freeport finished with 24 points, Gray New Gloucester 46, and Kennebunk 68.

Sydney Ambrose was unavailable for the Falcons

In the girls race, Freeport led with 20, while Kennebunk took second with 47 points.  Gray New Gloucester finished with 78 points.

The sunny conditions, with temperatures in the 60’s, may have been a bit hot for the runners but definitely not for the spectators.

Lake Region rallies for 2-2 tie with Waynflete in girls soccer

CeCe Hancock had two goals in the second half for the Lakers

CeCe Hancock had two goals in the second half for the Lakers

(Naples ME)  This game needed to end the way it did.

Waynflete and Lake Region played an entertaining, 2-2, tie which included two five-minute overtimes on Wednesday night at Naples.

Both teams had their moments in a game in which the ooh’s and aah’s were heard throughout regulation as well as in two five-minute, sudden death overtime periods.

The defending Class C champions from Portland dominated the first half and had what looked to be a comfortable 2-0 lead.

The visitors tallied a penalty kick midway through the first half.  Devynn Turner was called for a handball and sophomore Arianna Giguere took the PK and beat LR goalie Isabel Scribner on a shot to the left.

Later in the first half (3:51), senior Ella Millard found plenty of dribbling room and shooting room and zoomed a shot into the Lakers net.

In the second half, sophomore CeCe Hancock brought the Lakers back even with two exciting half-field rushes.  In the first goal, the shot wasn’t taken until she was nearly on the right endline.  The second rush to the goal was straight down the middle and the shot came from in close.

In the first overtime, CeCe almost won it firing a shot from the right a second late as the OT ended.

Taylor Currier (#13) came close in the 2nd overtime

Taylor Currier (#13) came close in the 2nd overtime

In the second overtime, Laker sophomore Taylor Currier got off a hard shot from the right that freshman goalie Ali Pope made her best save of the night on.

Two minutes later Flyers’ senior Leigh Fernandez took a shot from near the end line on the right that zipped past everyone in front of the net.  A head there and this one was over.

So it ended in a tie.  I’m sure the tie was most welcome to the 0-3-1 Class B Lakers.  They had lost three straight and only had two goals to show for the trio of games.

Lake Region really seemed sparked by the first of CeCe’s two goals at 30:26 in the second half.  I thought they did much better in the one-on-one battles as the game progressed.

Isobel Scribner reaches for a Laker save

Isabel Scribner reaches for a Laker save

I also thought that Waynflete was a little less aggressive after the second CeCe goal with 15 minutes left in the game.

You could understand Waynflete being more defensive minded than usual.  They were using third-string goalie freshman Ali Pope in net.  Where were the other two goalies?  State star Juliana Harwood has been having knee problems but should be back soon.  Also missing was second-string goalie Helen Gray-Bauer who took a hard shot in the face in a recent game.  Helen should also be back soon for the Flyers.

Credit the Waynflete freshman (Ali Pope) with a huge save in the second overtime off Taylor Currier.  Ali dove in front of Taylor’s shot and teammate Sophie Raffel cleared away the rebound.  That shot had game-winner written all over it!

Arianna Giguere lines up a penalty kick

Arianna Giguere lines up a penalty kick

Waynflete (2-0-1) will host Gray-New Gloucester on Friday at 3:30PM.

Lake Region will travel to Traip Academy (Kittery) on the same day and at the same time.

The weather was wonderful for a night game and there was a full moon to add some extra light.

Waynflete was 12-2-4 in 2012.  With Juliana Harwood in net the Flyers have been 25-5-3 with seventeen shutouts.  You think she would have made a difference against the Lakers??

I did not have time to look carefully but I don’t think Judd Nelson was in the house supporting the Flyers.  Who’s he?  Judd attended Waynflete and later went on to play John Bender in the movie classic, The Breakfast Club.  “Andrew here, would like a career in the custodial arts.”

York routs Lake Region 12-0 in boys soccer opener

(Naples ME)  This was a game begging for the mercy rule.

York (1-0) pounded Lake Region, 12-0, in a Class B West boys soccer game on sunny Friday afternoon in Naples.

The Wildcats have plenty of returnees from a 2012 team that went 10-5-1. Their 2012 season ended with a loss in the Class B West semifinals to Yarmouth.

The Lakers (0-1) lost nine seniors off a 1-13 team.

The Wildcats dominated in every facet of soccer.  Especially noticeable (to me) was their ability to make their short passing game work.

The only York struggle, in my opinion, was their ability to finish in the early going.  You may find that assessment ridiculous in a 12-0 game but trust me the Wildcats misfired on a host of point-blank attempts especially in the first forty minutes.

The Wildcats did quite a bit of long-range blasting away in the first half and tallied only three three times.

Mitchell Hickey (2 goals) tries to get past Brandan George

Mitchell Hickey (3 goals) tries to get past Brandan George

In the second half, the York passing was terrific. The shooting opportunities that would have been taken in the first half gave way to passes for even better shots.  That unselfishness led to seven second-half goals in a thirteen-minute segment of the second half.

In my unofficial scorekeeping, seniors Josh Mitchell  and Mitchell Hickey paced York with three goals apiece.

Mitchell Hickey (top returning scorer) lined up a number of booming shots from scoring range.

Sam Rickerich and Mike Gallagher each tallied twice for York.

Junior Mikey Bennett had the 11th York goal and sophomore Jordan Gomes added the 12th.

Mike Gallagher (4) scores the third York goal

Mike Gallagher (4) scores the third York goal

Josh Mitchell opened the scoring five minutes into the game.  He picked up his own rebound from in close and applied the finish.

If there was any positive takeaways for Lake Region it was their ability to keep York off the scoreboard for the next seventeen minutes.  But believe me (again) there were some golden opportunities for the visitors.

Mitchell Hickey broke the scoreless drought on a pass from Sam Rickerich at 18:50.  From where I was standing, near the Laker goal,  Mitchell warded off defender Zeke Tocci to get a clean look.

Mike Gallagher notched the third first-half goal, capitalizing on a juicy rebound after firing  a hard shot.  Jordon Gomes was given an assist.

Brandan George

Brandan George

Unfortunately for the Lakers, Brandan George took a shot in the nose in the last minute of the first half and had to leave the game.  Brandan, in my opinion, was by far LR’s best defensive player.  He is tall with a good foot.

Without Brandan on board to start the second half, you suspected that the three-goal deficit would increase considerably…………and it did.

The Lakers survived the first eight minutes of the second half but in the next thirteen minutes the goals came like a flood.  Much better shot selection by the Wildcats, against an inexperienced defense missing their best defender, led to seven scores.

LR goalie Mike Rust was lifted after the onslaught.  The junior made a number of remarkable saves during the afternoon but the sheer number of the York attempts was bound to produce results.

For the last nineteen minutes of the game York minimized their attack considerably.  Plenty of safe passes zipped around the midfield area as the clock wound down.

Mike Rust makes a save

Mike Rust makes a save

Two things I admired about the Lakers were that they never gave up and they didn’t take out their frustrations by fouling.  There were few whistles.  Jordon Gomes did get into first-half trouble for not keeping his mouth guard where it belonged.  There was also some clothing violation by York before the start of the second half.

York looks to be a team that should be in the mix when the Class B West tourney gets underway later in October.  Their next game is Tuesday hosting Cape Elizabeth at 4PM.

The Lakers looked overmatched to say the least against a team of York’s skills.  First year coach Michael Chaine will hope to see his team improve next game when they host Wells on Tuesday at 6:45PM.

Special thanks to the athletic departments of both schools.  They provided me with the rosters I needed to be able to identify pictures.

Sydney Hancock penalty kick gives Lake Region a 1-0 win over Sacopee Valley in girls soccer

Sydney Hancock fires a penalty kick left past Sacopee Valley goalie Emily Colbert in the second half.

Laker goalie Sarah Hancock has the ball go off her back but she recovered before Hawk attackers Courtney Ryan and Morgan Carpenter could capitalize late in the second half.

(Naples ME) Sydney Hancock’s successful, second-half penalty kick turned out to be the difference as the Lake Region Lakers defeated the Sacopee Valley Hawks, 1-0,  on a muggy Saturday afternoon of girls soccer.

Sydney tallied the game winner with seven minutes left lining her shot to Hawk goalie Emily Colbert’s left.

Credit teammate Kiersten Eldridge for sending Sydney to the penalty-shot line.  Kiersten retrieved a rebound and dribbled into some open space on her right and launched a shot that hit the hands of Sacopee defender Kristen Lyle in the penalty area.  That set up the shot that decided this game.

You had to feel badly for Sacopee Valley (2-4-1) because they absolutely dominated Lake Region (2-2-1) for most of the first half and came away empty.  Laker goalie Sarah Hancock handled thirteen shots (by my figuring).  There also was a blast by Hawk Courtney Ryan that hit the crossbar.

Kasey Huntress (left) Brooke Totman (right)

Junior Brooke Totman had a number of threatening shots for the team from Hiram in the first half.

This game was much more even in the second half.  The Lakers had ten shots while Sacopee Valley had seven.

Scoring chances?  Several.

The Lakers’ Tiana-Jo Carter lined up a shot from straightaway with eleven minutes left that rocked the crossbar.  It was easily the hardest shot of the day.

Later, after Sydney Hancock’s penalty kick goal, the Hawks came verrrrry close to tying the game.  Traffic in the box prevented Sarah Hancock from seeing a ball that hit her in the back (note picture) and started rolling toward the goal.  Freshmen Courtney Ryan and Morgan Carpenter were close by but couldn’t get to the loose ball before Sarah smothered it with 4:15 left.

Class C Sacopee Valley’s next game is home on September 25th (5PM) against Buckfield.

The Class B Lakers are back in action on the road (September 24th – 6PM) at Cape Elizabeth.

This was my first time seeing girls soccer in Maine.  I covered some Western Maine softball playoff action at St. Joseph’s in June.

Sydney Hancock (4) ,Lexi Crawford (5), Brooke Totman (9)

No question that the best player on the field was the Lakers’ Sydney Hancock.  The senior was a Western Maine all-stater last year.  She was fast and, despite special coverage, broke loose frequently.

Trying to find any information on the 2012 Sacopee Valley team was a Google impossibility.  But if you went back to 2010, it was an entirely different story because that was the year Coach Kevin Murphy’s team went 16-1-1 and defeated Fort Kent to win the Class C state title.

With only two seniors on his starting eleven, Coach Murphy may have some sort of special team in 2013.

I love going to a soccer game where there is a functioning scoreboard.

I’m sure that everyone knows that “Sacopee” gets its name because it is located in between the Saco River and the Ossipee River.  Well if you didn’t, now you do!
