Antonio Reyes Leads Salem Past Revere 70-52 in Opener

(Salem) Salem started its 2009-10 season with an impressive 70-52 win over the visiting Revere Patriots on Tuesday night at Salem High School.

Coach Tommy Doyle’s very effective matchup 1-2-2 zone kept the undersized Patriots away from in-close opportunities.  The Patriots, however, made enough long shots to hang around for three quarters.

The Witches struggled outside but could get to the basket for layups and putbacks to carry a 10-point lead into the 4th.  The Witches’ unanswered 10-point spurt at the start of the 4th put this one away for Salem.

The key matchup in this game was between a couple of juniors – Antonio Reyes of Salem and Trey Weathers of Revere. Both were Northeast Conference basketball All-Leaguers last year.  Both really had outstanding 2009 football seasons and were All-Stars in that sport as well.Antonio was the NEC North Defensive MVP as a linebacker AVERAGING 18 tackles per game.  Trey scored eleven touchdowns for the Patriots including one in a 10-7 loss to Salem on November 13th at Salem.

Antonio Reyes – 21 points and five assists

The Patriots used a man-to-man defense, so we watched Trey cover Antonio.   Not an easy task for any defender since Antonio seems to be comfortable shooting from any range and isn’t shy about taking the ball to the basket.  He also can go right or left for shots.  Anyhow, despite Trey’s athletic guarding Antonio had 21 points.  Antonio also had five assists which might make him even more attractive to recruiting schools at the next level.

Down the other end, Trey collected 19 points including three from long range.  He also rejected several Salem shots in convincing fashion.

Salem’s Captain Sean Linehan and teammate Derek McIntyre dominated the boards and minimized the number of easy attempts the Patriots were allowed in the paint.

#24 Sean Linehan and #23 Derek McIntrye combined for 21 rebounds for Salem
