Triton rallies by Foxboro 10-6

(Byfield) It’s that time of year.

There were close plays.

There were controversial plays.

There were tears and there were adults yelling at each other afterwards.

It’s tournament time.

The early rounds were over and now the higher seeds were facing each other with high expectations.

And when today’s Division 3 (Round of 16) Foxboro/Triton game was over, Coach Alan Noyes first words were, “How about them Vikes!”

The Vikings had just defeated #9 Foxboro, 10-6, on Tuesday afternoon.

#8 Triton was overmatched by Foxboro starter Emma Callahan for four innings getting only two hits.

The Warriors aggressive style at the plate produced runs (six of them) but also ended the third, fourth, and fifth innings with outs on the bases.

Those inning-enders didn’t seem all that important at the time because after 4 ½ innings Foxboro had a 6-0 lead while Triton had only two hits.

But in the bottom half of the fifth inning, the Vikings put on a hitting show. They whacked seven hits and scored ten runs.

“That ten-run inning was the high this year,” said Coach Noyes afterwards.

It was a nightmare inning for the team from the Hockomock League. There was a walk, a hit batsman, two infield errors, and several other plays that just didn’t go Foxboro’s way.

The Warriors, however, had time to cut into their 4-run deficit, but the Triton defense wouldn’t allow it.

In the Foxboro sixth, shortstop Kyla Story handled three hard-hit grounders flawlessly.

“That was the best game I’ve had out there,” said Kyla afterwards.

In the Foxboro seventh after a leadoff single, 2B Maddy Jacques fielded a grounder, stepped on second and threw to first for a double play. 1B Skylar Colburn handled the game’s final out unassisted.

“It was one of the best defensive games we’ve played top to bottom,” said Triton catcher Haleigh Harris post-game.

Sophomore Mallory Johnson came on in relief in the third inning and ended up with the win as the Vikings rallied.

“I have two excellent pitchers,” said Coach Noyes. “We’re not here without the both of them.”

“I just threw outside fastballs over and over again,” recalled Mallory. “If it hadn’t been for the defense behind me, it would have been a completely different game.”

The Warriors (12-10) had a two-run double (Emma Callahan) and a two-run single (Meg Kelley) in their four-run third inning.

Peyton Feldman had an RBI in the fourth while teammate Ava Hill had one in the fifth.

Almost all of Triton’s positive stats were in their explosive fifth inning. Skylar Colburn and Grace Romine had two hits in the inning. Grace also had two RBI in the inning.

Skylar collected four hits two days ago and three hits today against Foxboro.

This game was filled with close plays. Not everyone was pleased with the calls. Both coaches got onto the field to seek explanations for on-the-field decisions by the officials.

Shortstop Peyton Feldman made some good plays for Foxboro. 2B Vittoria Cuscia made a nice catch in foul territory in the first inning.

One of the plays that Coach Noyes referenced afterwards was centerfield Izzy Oldini getting into the infield to tag out a runner at second to end an inning.

The weather was good although the wind had the dust flying.

The Triton boys/girls lacrosse teams were on hand late in the game to encourage the school’s softball team.

Triton advances with 16-4 win over Cardinal Spellman in D3 Round of 32

(Byfield) Triton’s good contact and Cardinal Spellman’s defensive struggles were key factors in the Vikings 16-4 win on Sunday afternoon.

#8 Triton (16-5) now advance in Division 3 to the Round of 16 and will have another home game on Tuesday (4PM).

“We had timely hitting today,” said Triton coach Alan Noyes afterwards, “which we haven’t had for a few games.”

The Vikings rapped out twelve hits in a game that ended in the bottom of the fifth inning after an RBI single by Maddy Jacques moved the spread to twelve runs.

“They hit the ball in play,” said Coach Mike Gerrish of Cardinal Spellman. “They made things happen.”

The #25 Lady Cards (11-13) were gifted to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. A dropped foul pop and an infield error extended Cardinal Spellman’s at-bats and they made the Vikings pay. Ava Loud had an RBI single in that inning.

Triton quickly answered taking advantage of three walks and a throwing error. Haleigh Harris had a two-run single, and Skylar Colburn (4-for-4) drove in another run in the Vikings four-run response.

What looked to be, at this point, a high-scoring game in the making did not go that way. Triton starter Emma Penniman settled in, and the Vikings defense was flawless the rest of the game.

Things didn’t go as well for the Lady Cards. The defensive struggles continued (seven errors over the next 3+ innings by my count) and Triton continued to get hits.

“They put pressure on us with the bats,” said Coach Gerrish. “We made mistakes at costly times.”

The Vikings added three in the second inning and blew things open in the fourth with seven more runs. In that fourth, Kyla Story had two hits and two RBI. Maddy Jacques also had two RBI and teammates Mallory Johnson and Haleigh Harris added one RBI each.

Cardinal Spellman kept the Mercy Rule from kicking in by getting two runs in the top of the fifth inning. Emma Barnes and Ava Loud had RBI for the team from Brockton.

Maddy Jacques’ (two hits & 3 RBI) drove Grace Romine in to give Triton the walkoff win in the fifth inning.

“Emma Penniman didn’t have her best stuff, but she battled,” said Coach Noyes.

Emma gave up three singles (Emma Barnes, Ava Loud, Casey DiMastico) and had five strikeouts in five innings of pitching.

“I was nervous going into this game because they (Cardinal Spellman) are a really good team,” said Emma afterwards.

“My fastball and my curve were working today,” she added.

Sophomore Skylar Colburn was the hits leader getting four including a double. She was the one wearing the Vikings headgear afterwards.

“I had a hit every time I batted,” Skylar said post-game. “I don’t know why. I just had a good day.”

Izzy Oldini and Kyla Story both scored three times.

Maddy Jacques, Mallory Johnson, and Haleigh Harris each had three RBI.

A line drive off Ava Loud’s thigh in the fourth inning necessitated a pitching change for Cardinal Spellman. Ava Nabstedt filled in the rest of the game.

The weather, in the low 70s, was as good as it gets.

Mallory Johnson leads Triton past Lynnfield 13-1

Mallory Johnson had four hits including a home run

(Byfield) Have yourself a game, Mallory Johnson!

The Triton sophomore had everything going today and led the Vikings to a, 13-1, win over Lynnfield in Cape Ann League action.

Mallory gave the Pioneers (0-2) trouble whether she was pitching or hitting.

She pitched five innings (mercy rule) and gave up just one hit (Sophia Brown) and struck out seven batters.

“It was the best I’ve seen her pitch in the two years that I’ve been here,” said Vikings coach Alan Noyes afterwards.

“She’s now able to throw the ball by kids on the inside rather than nibbling away on the outside,” he added.

Mallory the hitter was equally impressive. She had a hit in each of her four at-bats including a solo homer in the third inning. She also scored three times.

Even Mallory, herself, had to admit (reluctantly) afterwards that she “thought she had a good game.” The stats were screaming that she had done just that!

“Triton is a strong team,” said Lynnfield coach Peter Marinelli post-game. “His infield is very good, and he has some real good hitters.”

Triton (2-1) scored in every inning and had contributions from every batter in their lineup.

Sophomore Kyla Story had a two-run homer during the bat-around fifth inning.

Reghan Haley had two hits and scored twice. Teammate Izzy Oldini drove in a pair of runs.

“We’re getting better every day,” said Coach Noyes.

It was a tough afternoon for Lynnfield.

“It was a very long day,” said Coach Marinelli. “We’re missing kids and we have people playing out of position. We’re inexperienced and some of the players are still learning what to do before the ball is hit to them.”

Several times this afternoon, Pioneers’ fielders would have the ball and hesitate, and Triton would take extra bases.

The Vikings were missing Haleigh Harris (concussion protocol) but Skylar Colburn filled in nicely behind the plate.

“Skylar was good back there,” said Mallory. “I threw mostly fastballs. I felt strong today, much better than usual.”

Sophia Brown pitched for Lynnfield and also had the Pioneers hit.

Sophia’s solid shot up the middle led off the Lynnfield fifth inning. Catie Kampersal ran for Sophia and scored the Pioneers run.

Nice weather for April 11^th. Temperatures were close to sixty with plenty of sun.

Grace Romine shines in relief in Triton’s 13-4 win over Ipswich

Grace Romine pitched four shutout innings in relief for Triton

(Byfield MA) Triton can hit and they can score runs.

Today the relief pitching of sophomore Grace Romine kicked in as well to help the Vikings defeat Ipswich, 13-4, on Friday afternoon.

Grace came in for starter Mallory Johnson in the top of the fourth inning.

First batter Grace faced (Rowan Galanis) dropped down a perfect run-producing bunt to give the Tigers a, 4-3, lead.

After that? Ipswich didn’t get a run or a hit the rest of the way, in fact, Grace retired the last ten batters she faced.

“Grace pitched well,” said Triton coach Alan Noyes afterwards. “She pitched well in a loss to North Reading a few weeks ago. She’ll probably get the ball when we play Newburyport on Monday.”

The Vikings (6-5) had hits in every inning and scored in every inning.

“They’ve got good hitters,” said Ipswich coach Paul James post-game.

Kyla Story, Haleigh Harris, and Natalie Indingaro led the Triton attack. Kyla had four hits and four RBI. Haleigh contributed three hits and two RBI, while Natalie had two hits and two RBI.

“We do a lot of hitting,” explained Coach Noyes. “We put in forty-five minutes to an hour every day we practice.”

The Tigers, however, looked strong in this one into the fourth inning.

“We had it close,” recalled Coach James.

Triton errors and hit batsmen put the visitors into numerous scoring situations during the early innings and they capitalized four times.

However, despite some shaky plays, the Vikings also had some defensive gems that limited the Ipswich run production.

Twice in the first four innings, Rowan Galanis was thrown out at the plate.

In the second inning, it was a throw by centerfielder Izzy Oldoni that got the Ipswich senior.

In the fourth inning, when Cassidy Smith tried to steal second, the throw went directly to shortstop Kyla Story instead. Kyla returned the throw to catcher Haleigh Harris catching Rowan trying to score from third.

In the third inning, rightfielder Natalie Indingaro made a nice running catch to rob Maya Williams of a hit.

The Vikings had eight doubles off starter Annabel Morris and those big hits accounted for seven runs driven in.

Senior Gabby McKendry had a two-out, two-run single during Triton’s six-run sixth inning.

Junior Lexi James had two hits and scored three times for Ipswich.

The weather was warm, and the threatening clouds didn’t turn into anything.

The seniors from both schools were honored afterwards.

Freshman Kyla Story continues to impress me with her hitting and her fielding. I’m not the only one.

Coach James: “Triton has a great shortstop.”

Coach Noyes: “At the start of tryouts she hid in the corner. She’s come into her own. She’s the real deal. She had a big game against Lynnfield.”

I asked Kyla afterwards about the game: “Our energy got up after a while. I’ve been practicing a lot. I play in the middle infield for the Northeast Hurricanes.”

Triton gets twenty-five hits defeating Pentucket 27-12

(Groveland MA) “Triton is a crazy hitting team,” said Pentucket coach Deb Smith afterwards.

No chance of an argument on that one from anyone at Groveland Pines this afternoon.

Triton put on a hitting show defeating Pentucket, 27-12, in a game called after five innings.

“We can hit,” said Triton coach Alan Noyes, “and when our pitching develops, we’re going to be pretty good.”

The Vikings (1-1) climbed off the bus hitting today jumping into a seven-run lead in the first inning.

Credit Pentucket. They put a six-run inning together in the second inning and the game was tied, 7-7, after two innings.

“Pentucket girls don’t quit,” added Coach Noyes. “A lot of these kids play together on club teams.”

“I liked the way we came back after falling behind early,” said Coach Smith.

The good news for the Sachems (0-2) was the early comeback. The bad news was that the Vikings weren’t done scoring.

The visitors from Byfield sent fourteen batters to the plate in the third inning adding nine runs. In the fifth inning it was sixteen batters and ten more runs.

“Triton hit the ball so hard and so well and they were very disciplined waiting for their pitch,” said Coach Smith. “It was hard to defend.”

Haleigh Harris, Natalie Indingaro, and Mallory Johnson had over-the-fence home runs for Triton.

Sophomore Grace Romine took the win going four innings in relief of starter Mallory Johnson. Grace also scored three runs, had four hits, and drove five runs in.

Freshman Mallory Johnson collected three hits (including the HR), scored two runs, and added six RBI.

Sophomore Natalie Indingaro contributed four hits (including the HR), scored two runs, and drove in six.

Everyone in the Triton starting lineup had at least one hit.

Pentucket did end up getting twelve runs which would be enough to be competitive with many Cape Ann League teams.

Sophomore Ella Agocs and junior Bailey Stock each had three hits for the Sachems.

“There’s nothing we can do but get better,” said Coach Smith. “I’m not worried. We’ll learn from today and hopefully get some wins next week.”

Coach Noyes: “Seven of our starters are either freshman or sophomores. Twelve of the thirteen kids on our roster had never dressed for a varsity game.”

Coach Smith: “We have almost all new players with only one returning starter.”

Senior Charlotte Latham and junior Meg Hamel did the pitching for Pentucket.

It may be early, but Triton’s freshman shortstop Kyla Story looks to have the range and arm of her predecessor CAL All-Star Bridget Sheehan. Kyla had three hits and scored three runs.

I haven’t done a Pentucket softball game for a while. Last time for me may have been when Julie Freitas (assistant coach) pitched the Sachems past Newburyport. Julie is now at UNH playing club softball.

There was plenty of “action” beyond the leftfield fence if dogs barking is your thing. One of Triton’s home runs gave those dogs something to bark about landing in the midst of them.

I’ve done a few games and the pattern is for the visiting team to be late arriving. Learned why today. It’s because of a shortage of bus drivers due to Covid-19. A driver has to finish his/her route before bringing a team to a game.

Sunny afternoon but breezy.

When I get into Groveland Pines it takes me back to college days when I used to come here to watch drivers such as Bentley Warren and Ollie Silva in action.
