Late points by Petey Morton send Manchester-Essex past Triton 57-53

Petey Morton (17 points) had a basket and two free throws in the last three seconds.

(Byfield MA)  Petey Morton (17 points) tallied four points in the last three seconds to lead Manchester-Essex past Triton, 57-53, on Friday night in Cape Ann League play.

The Hornets (8-2) had, what looked like, a comfortable ten-point lead (53-43) with three minutes left in the game.  But uncomfortable it became as the Vikings started with 3’s (Corey Parsons and Kevin Clark), added two free throws (Kevin Clark) and then had Corey Parsons convert an ME turnover into a layup.  When all that excitement ended the game was tied, 53-53, with ten seconds left.

No timeout by the Hornets.  Instead senior Petey Morton took the inbounds pass and raced down the floor and connected on an open floater in the lane with three seconds left to put ME up by two.

Triton had time to recover but after a timeout a pass from Khalil Brito, intended for Nick Venor, went out of bounds.  ME inbounded the ball to Petey Morton.  He was fouled and ended the game with two successful free throws.

This was a tough, fourth-straight loss for Triton (3-6) in a game in which they had a 10-point lead in the first half and also rallied back from a 10-point deficit in the final quarter.

Ellsworth Rogers in a double team

Ellsworth Rogers in a double team

The Vikings Ellsworth Rogers went down with an ankle injury two minutes into the third quarter after a layup and never returned.  Some on the Triton side thought that Ellsworth had been tripped but there was no foul called on the play.

Triton built up a 10-point lead (25-15) three minutes into the second quarter.  Craig Carter, Sean Gutierrez, and Petey Morton, however, helped ME get back to within four (30-26) by halftime.

Will Burgess (11 points) had a nine-point third quarter to push ME in front, 43-40, by the time that quarter ended.

Khalil Brito of Triton started the scoring in the final quarter with a three to tie the score.  After that was a ten-point run by Manchester-Essex (five points from Jeff Durkin, three free throws Sean Gutierrez, jump shot Petey Morton).

But that 10-point spread vanished as the Triton crowd exploded after defensive stops and made shots.  And when Sean Gutierrez lost the ball to Corey Parsons for a tying layup, there was no question which side had the momentum.

Petey Morton saw plenty of defense most of the night

Petey Morton saw plenty of defense most of the night

But somehow Petey Morton was able to dribble into open space over halfcourt and get an open look at the foul line to hit the game winner.

Petey was obviously not unknown to Triton.  The senior is ME’s primary ball-handler.  He was pressed hard by Kevin Clark and Khalil Brito most of the time.  That’s why the open space Petey found at the end was so surprising.

ME switched from a man-to-man into a 1-3-1 trapping zone to start the second half.  Triton turned the ball over four straight times trying to operate against it.

Triton played a tight man-to-man throughout the game.  That defense created eleven ME miscues in the first half.

Neither Petey Morton or Sean Gutierrez (15 points) were in the game for the first four minutes of the first quarter.

Kevin Clark (10 points) sets to shoot

Kevin Clark (10 points) sets to shoot

Kevin Clark had a buzzer-beater at the end of the first quarter.  Petey Morton had one of those to end the third quarter.

The Hornets have won five of their last six.  Their next game is home on Monday versus Pentucket.

The Vikings will look to end their losing streak at Georgetown on Monday.

Triton was 9-11 last year while Manchester-Essex was 13-8.

Two of the CAL’s most vocal/intense coaches involved in this one.  No signs of laryngitis from either Triton’s David Clay or ME’s Bryan Shields, however.

Newburyport rallies past Triton 9-5 in Cape Ann League softball

(Salisbury) The Newburyport Clippers scored the last seven runs of the game and defeated Triton, 9-5, at Lions Park on a nice Monday night.

The Clippers (12-5/9-4) have now won six of their last seven games and are still in the hunt for the Cape Ann League Division 1 title.  They trail D1 leader North Reading (10-3) by a game and are looking for help from Masconomet which hosts the Hornets on Wednesday.

This was yet another tough loss for Triton (7-9).  The Vikings have now dropped five straight after being a promising 7-4 not too long ago.  Fielding miscues were the primary culprit in the loss to Newburyport.

Triton closes its season tomorrow at Manchester-Essex.  The Hornets (1-13) won their opening game and haven’t won since.  One of the teams tomorrow will be ending a losing streak.

The keys to the Newburyport win were clutch hitting and errorless defense.  The Clippers rapped fourteen hits off of Triton’s Mara Spears and only left five baserunners.

The infield defense of Kendra Dow (SS), Jackie Krusemark (2B), and Carley Siemasko (1B) was flawless.

Kendra’s best play and was a catch of Kylie Gilroy’s hard-hit liner that put an end to Triton’s three-run third inning.

Carley took care of two potential doubles down the first baseline off the bats of Mara Spears and Kelsey Trudel.

The solid Clippers defense enabled pitcher Vicki Allman to retire eleven of the last twelve batters she faced, including nine straight.  The only Vikings baserunner over the final four frames was Cory Simons.

And while the Vikings were held scoreless over the final four innings the Clippers pounded two doubles (Lauren Singer and Casey Barlow) and eight singles collecting seven runs over the final four innings.

Rylee Culverwell injured on this play

Rylee Culverwell injured on this play

It certainly hurt the Vikings to have #3 hitter Rylee Culverwell leave the game injured in the third inning.  Freshman Rylee’s bat was missed the rest of the way as well as her excellent defense at third.

Of the seven, last-four-innings, runs for Newburyport only five of them were earned.  A bobble at third (Casey Ross) and a single that turned into a 2-base error (CF Ashley Shute) allowed the two extra runs.

Newburyport opened the scoring in the second inning.  Ashley Hodge and Vicki Allman singled and both Ashley and Vicki’s pinch-runner (Molly Stanton) came home on 2B Kylie Gilroy’s two-out error.

Triton put together a single (Kylie Gilroy), double (Cara Orlandi), and a single (Julia Hartman) to tie the score, 2-2, in the second.

Rachel McCarthy caught stealing

Rachel McCarthy caught stealing

The Vikings jumped ahead by three (5-2) in the third.  A double (Cory Simons) and three singles (Rylee Culverwell, Kelsey Trudel, Lily Anderson) were keys.  However, the promising inning ended when pinch runner Rachel McCarthy was tossed out trying to steal and the next batter’s line drive was taken by NHS shortstop Kendra Dow.  The Viking would have only one hit the rest of the way but at the moment they had a 5-2 lead after three innings.

Newburyport pulled ahead for good with four runs in the fourth.  A big hit was Kendra Dow’s two-out double to the CF fence driving in a pair.

In the fifth, Casey Barlow (3 hits) hit a rope to center and reached third with no outs when the ball skipped by CF Ashley Shute.  Ashley Hodge’s sacrifice fly delivered Casey with the Clippers seventh run.

Lea Tomasz

Lea Tomasz

Newburyport added to its 7-5 lead with two more runs in the seventh inning.  The Clippers went double (Lauren Singer), single (Lea Tomasz), double (Casey Barlow), and single (Ashley Hodge) to get the pair of runs.

Lily Anderson made an excellent play on a foul popup in the fourth inning.

Rylee Culverwell had her right arm in a sling afterwards.  I believe that her injury occurred when she slid home scoring Triton’s fourth run.

Casey Barlow paced the Newburyport hitters with three.  Lauren Singer, Lea Tomasz, Ashley Hodge, and Vicki Allman had two hits each.

Senior Cory Simons led Triton with two hits.  Teammate Kelsey Trudel scored two runs for the Vikings.  Both of these quality players will be suiting up for their last game tomorrow.

Lions Park was a nice setting.  The infield was smooth and the outfield was green.  One of the bank of lights went out in the seventh inning but most of the fast-paced game was played in daylight.

Triton is a team that certainly has had some highs and lows.  They are the only team to beat Amesbury (4-3).  They defeated Newburyport the last time they met.  But then there’s the loss early in the season to 2-12 Ipswich.

Newburyport rallies to defeat Triton 8-7 in Cape Ann League baseball

Scott Webster struck out four and earned a save against Triton

Nick Desrocher (#2) hit a 3-run homer over the centerfield fence.

Nick Desrocher (#2) hit a 3-run homer over the centerfield fence.

(Byfield)  Plenty of excitement in this one.

Newburyport ended a three-game losing streak defeating Triton, 8-7, at windier-than-usual Triton on Thursday afternoon.

The game had runs, hits, errors, clutch relief pitching, and controversy.

(It was also the game where my camera stopped working and it surely wasn’t from lack of use!)

The Clippers (8-7) had a nice 6-1 lead going into the bottom of the third inning.  However, a 2-out error by shortstop Colby Morris enabled the Vikings to add four runs to the two they already had scored in the inning.  After three innings, the home team had a 7-6 lead.

Newburyport would regain the lead in the fifth inning with two runs.  One scorer (Mike Sweeney) reached on an error (Jon Seward) and another (James Nutter) was hit by a pitch.

Those two Clippers runs provided the one-run margin that held up for the winners.

The hero for Newburyport was reliever Scott Webster.  The freshman righty came on with the bases loaded in the fifth and two outs.  He fell behind 3-1 to leadoff batter Dmitri Hunt before getting him to ground out.

Triton came very close to tying the game in the sixth.  A two-out walk to Nick Cornoni was followed by a double over rightfielder Ryan Short’s head.  The Clippers were fortunate that the double bounced over the fence because with two outs Nick probably would have tied the game if the ball had stayed in play.  But it didn’t and Scott fanned pinch hitter Matt Souliotis to escape with Newburyport’s one-run lead (8-7) still in place.

Brian Fiascone

Brian Fiascone

Controversy was a big part of the Newburyport half of the seventh inning.  One sure way to create “excitement” if you’re umpiring is to make one call and then change it in a one-run game.  But that’s what happened.  Blame Brian Fiascone.  Thinking there were three outs (there was only two) after grounding into a force play, Brian left the field and headed for the Clippers bench.  Both coaching staffs realized what had happened and Brian scampered back to first……..barely and was called “safe.”  The Triton coaching staff had a bad reaction to the call and got the two umpires to discuss it.  Next thing we knew Brian was “out.”  Now it was Newburyport’s turn to get a bad reaction.  A protest was going to be filed by NHS coach Steve Malenfant and in addition Connor Wile and Andrew Fiascone were kicked out of the game for their comments.

But the “out” call stood and the inning was over.

The bottom of the seventh was all Scott Webster.  He K’d the side getting Nick Desrocher (who had hit a 3-run homer in the third) as the final out to earn the save.

Justin Cashman

Justin Cashman

Justin Cashman surrendered ten hits and took the loss for the Vikings but five of the eight runs against him were unearned by my figuring.  Second baseman Jon Seward had a rough day in the field with three errors.

Conditions were tough in the field.  The combination of bright sun, gale-force winds, and swirling dust gave both teams trouble.

Two errors in the first inning (Jon Seward and Brad Whitman) allowed the Clippers to get off to a 3-zip lead.

Triton got one back in the bottom of the first.  A two-base throwing error by third baseman Colton Fontaine, a fielder’s choice, and a wild pitch (Evan Habib) enabled Dmitri Hunt to score.

In the second inning, Newburyport added a pair of runs.  Smart base-running was the key.  James Nutter walked, stole second and came home on Colton Fontaine’s single.  Colton took second on the throw in and scored from there on Colby Morris’ single to left.

Catcher Bob Wolcik waits for Chance Carpenter

Catcher Bob Wolcik waits for Chance Carpenter

The Clippers ran into an out in the third but came away with their sixth run.  Chance Carpenter went from first to third on a wild pitch.  However, his attempt to get home on, what looked to be, a suicide squeeze failed because he left early and was tagged out easily.  But with two outs Ryan Short walked, took second on a passed ball, and rode home on James Nutter’s single to center.

Triton started the third with a walk (Cote Wolcik) and three straight singles (Justin Cashman, Nick Cornoni, and Adam Chatterton) and had two runs in with two outs.  Colby Morris’ error led to the third Vikings run and then Nick Desrocher delighted the sizable Triton crowd with a 3-run blast to straightaway center.  No question the wind helped.  It was Nick’s first home run.

The Clippers capitalized on an error and a hit bats man in the decisive fifth inning to set the stage for an RBI double (Colton Fontaine) and an RBI sacrifice fly by Brian Fiascone.

James Nutter (#6) scored the 8th Newburyport run

James Nutter (#6) scored the 8th Newburyport run

Colton Fontaine scored a run, had three hits, and drove in two runs.  Colby Morris had two hits while James Nutter scored two runs.

Adam Chatterton had two of Triton’s five hits and an RBI.  Nick Desrocher walked twice and had the 3-run long one.

Jake Barlow filled in for Connor Wile behind the plate in the seventh inning.

The Clippers defeated Triton, 4-3, at Newburyport on April 19th.

Both teams return to action on Saturday (10AM).  Triton hosts Pentucket while Newburyport hosts Hamilton-Wenham.

Triton edges Amesbury 5-3 in Cape Ann League baseball

(Amesbury)  Triton took advantage of walks and errors defeating Amesbury, 5-3, on a cold Monday afternoon of Cape Ann League baseball.

Triton (8-6) broke a 3-3 tie in the sixth inning thanks to four straight two-out walks by Indians starter Andy Reidy.

In the seventh inning, with Nick Hawruchiew now pitching, Tommy Connors (playing second in a drawn in infield) bobbled a grounder enabling the Vikings to get an insurance run.

Nick Cornoni pitched a complete game for Triton getting his third win of the season.  Nick gave up eight hits over the first five innings but held Amesbury hitless over the final two innings.

The Indians (7-7) left the bases loaded in the first and the fifth.

Devlin Gobeil and Adam Chatterton

The biggest play in the game (in my opinion) was in the Amesbury half of the fifth inning.  To set the scene: the Indians had tied the score, the bases were loaded,  and the Vikings had already committed two errors (Billy Mical & Justin Cashman) in the inning.  A grounder came Justin’s way and his throw was low to first but Adam Chatterton made the scoop ending the inning.

Triton went on from that scary inning to get the two runs that spelled the final difference.

Nick Cornoni scored the first run of the game in the top of the second inning after leading off with a walk.  A wild pitch and a fielder’s choice got the senior to third.  Adam Chatterton’s fly ball to center drove in the first Vikings run.

The Indians tied the score (1-1) in the fourth.  Ben Cullen walks, stole second, reached third on a wild pitch, and came home on John Pesci’s two-out single.

The visitors grabbed a 2-run lead in the fifth inning.  A two-out error by third baseman Zack Fitzgerald allowed pinch runner James Wood to score.  Cote Wolcik followed with an RBI single to bring Nick Desrocher home.

Amesbury would tie the score in their half of the fifth but Triton added two more runs to win in the last two innings.

Vikings catcher Cote Wolcik saved the day in the third inning by corralling a wild pitch with an Amesbury runner on third base.

Shortstop Justin Cashman leaps to end the fourth inning.

Close calls in the infield had both coaching staffs unhappy.

Both teams return to action tomorrow.  Triton is at Hamilton-Wenham while Amesbury hosts Ipswich.

Devlin Gobeil had two hits, an RBI, and scored a run for Amesbury.

Dmitri Hunt had two hits for Triton.  The Vikings centerfielder had five putouts including three straight in the sixth inning.

Indians starter Andy Reidy gave up only three hits in the six innings he worked to go with six strikeouts.  However, the junior lefty walked eight batters and three of them scored.

Triton is now two wins away from making the post-season tournament.  The Vikings were 9-11 last season.

Triton stuns undefeated Amesbury 4-3 in Cape Ann League softball

Casey Ross scores the eventual game-winner for Triton

Mara Spears allowed six hits and retired the last seven Amesbury batters

Mara Spears allowed six hits and retired the last seven Amesbury batters

(Amesbury) Amesbury fell from the undefeated ranks as surprising Triton upset them, 4-3, on a lovely Monday afternoon of Cape Ann League softball.

Triton (4-4) has now won four of their last five games and have certainly come a long way since their, 12-2, nonleague loss to Amesbury in the opener on April 10th.

The Indians (8-1) were coasting through five innings thanks to pitcher Carolina Merrill.  Triton was hitless and she had allowed only two baserunners on walks.  Amesbury had built up a 3-0 lead and looked completely in charge.

But visions of a no-hitter ended in the sixth inning.  Pinch hitter Rose Gaffin hit a leadoff single to left and Alexa Reilly ran for her.  That was the end of the no-hitter.

Amesbury’s three-run lead also disappeared before that sixth inning was over.  Three errors (Lauren Fedorchak, Cassie Schultz, Autumn Kligerman) opened the door for the three Vikings runs that tied the score.

On the first error (drop of a throw) it took an overrule by the home-plate umpire or there would have been a forceout at second base.

The second error was a throw after picking up a bunt try that went past first into right field.  Alexa Reilly beat the throw home…..somehow, for Triton’s first run.

Autumn Kligerman prepares to throw to first during the Vikings 3-run sixth inning

Autumn Kligerman prepares to throw to first during the Vikings 3-run sixth inning

The Indians looked to be out of the inning with a 3-1 lead in place but a two-base throwing error enabled both Mara Spears and Rylee Culverwell to cross with the runs that tied the score.

Now tied going into the seventh, the Vikings pushed across what turned out to be the winning run.  Julia Hartman singled to left with one out.  Casey Ross ran for Julia.  Alexa Reilly sacrifice bunted Casey to second with two outs.  Mara Spears singled into right field and Casey Ross was able to score before Mara was thrown out trying for second.

On that run-scoring play, Mara’s single reached rightfielder Jenna Bartley in a hurry.  Her quick throw in was cut off by pitcher Carolina Merrill who appeared to have a good shot at the baserunner trying to score.  But the throw instead went to second (getting Mara) as the run scored.

Pitcher Mara Spears retired the Indians in order in the bottom of the seventh to notch the win.  Mara, in fact, retired the last seven Amesbury batters in order.

Alexi Boswell reaches third

Alexi Boswell reaches third

Amesbury scored their first run in the second inning.  Alexi Boswell (two hits/two runs) tripled to left with one out.  Amanda Schell drove Alexi home with a single to right.  The Vikings escaped further damage that inning when Erin Leary lined to short (Kelsey Trudel) and Cassie Schultz was picked off second after the catch.

The Indians would add two more runs in the fifth inning.  Alexi Boswell singled down the thirdbase line then reached third after a steal and a sacrifice bunt.  Erin Leary blooped a single over the pitcher to score Alexi with two outs.  Erin would then score Amesbury’s third run when Ashley Valme’s high fly to right center was dropped when  Vikings rightfielder Cara Orlandi collided with centerfielder Rachel McCarthy.  Next play, however, Rachel made a nice running catch in left center to get the Vikings out of the inning.

Mara Spears has been a key to Triton’s turnaround.  In the 12-2 loss in the opener she allowed thirteen hits.  This time around there were only six hits and none in the last 2 1/3  innings with the game on the line.

There was a scary moment for Mara and the rest of us on hand.  In the bottom of the fifth, after Amesbury had scored a couple of runs, Mara threw a pitch and crumpled to the ground.  It looked serious and having seen Cori Simons down and out five days ago you feared the worst.  However, Mara got up, got some medical counsel, and resumed not allowing a base runner the rest of the way.

Carolina Merrill allowed only three hits and one earned run

Carolina Merrill allowed only three hits and one earned run

Carolina Merrill deserved a better fate.  The talented senior surrendered only three hits and one earned run.  Her normally defensively reliable teammates let her down in Triton’s 3-run sixth.

Ashley Valme and Alexi Boswell each had two hits for Amesbury.

Besides pitching the six-hitter, Mara Spears had a hit, scored a run, and had an RBI.

Cara Orlandi and Peyton Hunt tried to bunt with two strikes on them in the fifth and ended up striking out.

Third baseman Rylee Culverwell and catcher Julia Hartman had trouble with Autumn Kligerman’s bunt in the fourth inning.

The last time Amesbury lost was June 3, 2012 to Danvers (2-0) in the Division 2 North quarterfinals at Danvers.

Cori Simons was a frustrated spectator for Triton.  She hopes to get back playing before too long.

Triton defeats Newburyport in eight innings 10-7

Vicki Allman reaches third in the seventh inning after a 2-out, 3-run triple to tie the score.

Vicki Allman reaches third in the seventh inning after a 2-out, 3-run triple to tie the score.

(Newburyport) Triton survived a shaky seventh inning and went on to defeat Newburyport, 10-7, in eight innings on a beautiful Wednesday afternoon along the Merrimack River.

The Vikings (2-4) had a three run lead (7-4) with two outs in the bottom of the seventh but Vicki Allman cleared the bases with a triple to right center tying the score.

Big play in this game?  Triton pitcher Mara Spears threw a wild pitch to the next batter (pinch hitter Ashley Casellini) and Vicki Allman tried to score.  Catcher Julia Hartman retrieved the ball, tossed to Mara covering home, and Vicki was tagged out to end the inning.  If Vicki had scored the game was over.

Mara and Vicki head for the plate.

Triton won the game with three runs in the eighth.  Cara Orlandi singled to left leading off. After a force-out by Mara Spears,  Rylee Culverwell, attempting to sacrifice bunt, ended up with a bunt single.  Both runners moved up on catcher Lauren Singer’s passed ball before Kylie Gilroy’s 2-strike single delivered Mara.  On Kylie’s RBI, Rylee ended up on third and Kylie took second on the throw.  A hard hit grounder by Kelsey Trudel with two outs overwhelmed second baseman Molly Stanton allowing two more Triton runs.

That three-run margin stood up nicely as pitcher Mara Spears retired the Clippers in order in the bottom of the eighth.

Cori Simons down with a leg injury

Cori Simons down with a leg injury

The exciting win may have been costly for Triton because Cape Ann League All-Leaguer Cori Simons injured her left leg in the fourth inning.  There was no collision involved, the talented senior was just going back to second after a pitch had been thrown.  Let’s hope/pray it isn’t serious. (I got an update this AM on Cori.  It appears to be strained ligaments.  She will be on crutches and could be back playing in a couple of weeks.)

Carley Siemasko and Vicki Allman pitched for Newburyport while Mara Spears went the distance for Triton.  The trio gave up seventeen runs but only five of the runs were earned, by my figuring.

Mara had six errors by her teammates while the Clippers pitchers had four errors by their teammates.

Newburyport put a single (Lauren Singer), RBI double (Ashley Hodge), and 2-run homer by Lea Tomasz together in the third inning to take a 3-2 lead.  Lea’s home run rolled to the fence in left field.

Kelsey Trudel had three RBI

Kelsey Trudel had three RBI

The fourth inning was a disaster for Newburyport as they gave up five runs.  The bad combination of three walks and two errors (Shelby O’Brien and Vicki Allman) was joined with a 2-run triple by Kelsey Trudel.

Down 7-3, the Clippers got a run back in the sixth.  An error by second baseman Kylie Gilroy extended the inning.  NHS had runners on first and third with one out.  Molly Stanton broke for second and was tagged out while Vicki Allman raced home.

In the bottom of the seventh the Clippers put three on the board to tie but Vicki Allman was tagged out going for the game winner.

Vicki relieved Carley Siemasko (making her first start) in the fourth inning with one out and five runs in.  The hard-throwing junior K’d Brittany Gallant and Rose Gaffin to end the inning.

Vicki cruised through innings 5-7 before the Vikings reached her for three hits in their big 8th.

Triton will host Pentucket tomorrow while Newburyport will travel to Pentucket on Friday.  Today Pentucket visited North Reading and gave the Hornets their first loss in Cape Ann League play.

Vicki Allman had three RBI while teammate Lea Tomasz had two RBI.

Vicki also had three hits and struck out six Vikings.

Rylee Culverwell, Cori Simons, Lily Anderson, and Cara Orlandi each had two hits for Triton.  Kelsey Trudel had three RBI for the winners.

Ipswich clutch hitting sinks Triton 6-2 in softball

Jill Lombard (#13) hits a 2-run double over the glove of Rachel McCarthy in center in the third.

Jill Lombard (#13) hits a 2-run double over the glove of Rachel McCarthy in center in the third.

(Byfield)  One team had runners in scoring position with two outs in three different innings and came away with six runs.

The other team had the bases loaded with one out in three different innings and came away with one run.

Therein lies the key data in the Ipswich Tigers, 6-2, win over the Triton Vikings on Monday morning/afternoon in non-league Cape Ann League softball action.

The Tigers (1-1) collected four of their runs in the last two innings to break away from a 2-2 tie after four innings.

If Ipswich coach Doug Woodworth was handing out a game ball to the top performer afterwards …….good luck!  A number of players were deserving for sure.

My choice, after studying the stat sheet, goes to sophomore Molly Mello just for her heroics in the seventh inning.

At the bat in the seventh, it was Molly dropping a bloop single into left that brought home teammates Carolyn Lynch and Carly Coughlin with insurance runs five and six.

Maybe even better for Molly, and the Tigers, was what happened in Triton’s last at bats in the seventh.  For the third time in the game the Vikings had the bases loaded with one out.

In that game-on-the-line situation, Julia Hartman hit a foul popup up the first baseline that Molly reacted to from her catching position and caught with her back to home plate.  Meanwhile, Triton’s Cori Simons (on third base) saw the plate unattended and tried to score.  Molly raced back to home and tagged Cori out for the final out.

Senior Sami Brouillette got the win for the Tigers.  Sami had control trouble early, giving up three straight walks and a wild pitch in the first inning.  The Vikings came away with just one run (Cori Simons) as one runner (Mara Spears) was forced at the plate and shortstop Carolyn Lynch handled an infield grounder for the final out.

Ipswich picked up their first two runs in the third.  A bunt single (Meredith Kercher) and a sharp single (Carolyn Lynch) between third and short set the Tigers up in their first 2-on, 2-out situation.  Jill Lombard’s blast over Rachel McCarthy’s head in center then delivered the first two Ipswich runs.

Triton tied the score in the fourth inning.  Freshman Rylee Culverwell singled, stole second, and scored Mara Spears RBI single to center.

The Tigers picked up a pair of unearned runs in the sixth inning.  A one-out error (dropped fly ball by centerfielder Rachel McCarthy) was surrounded by a single (Carly Coughlin) on one side and two-out RBI singles (Jessie Spencer and Kaysee Lemonosky) on the other.  Molly Mello and Sydney Law scored the runs for Ipswich.

Molly Mello’s two-out hit in the seventh gave the Tigers the 4-run cushion that stayed that way to the game’s end despite a scary (for Ipswich) bottom of the seventh.

Triton hurt themselves on the bases a couple of times.  In the third, base-runner Kelsey Trudel interfered with shortstop Carolyn Lynch with the bases loaded for the final out.  In the sixth, pinch-runner Ashley Shute was picked off third by Carolyn Lynch with one out.

Pitcher Mara Spears and first baseman Lily Anderson each had two hits for Triton.

Carolyn Lynch, Jill Lombard, and Molly Mello did the same for Ipswich.

A couple of veteran coaches in action in this one: Doug Woodworth (28th season) and Jim Hounam (27th season.)

Shortstop Carolyn Lynch (2012 CAL All-Star) made a nice final-out, running catch toward the foul line in the sixth inning.

Rightfielder Sydney Law made a tough catch in the Triton sixth.

Next game for Ipswich is at Georgetown at 10AM on Wednesday.

Next game for Triton is at Masconomet on Wednesday at 3:45PM.

Amesbury wins easily over Triton 12-2 in Cape Ann League softball

(Byfield)  Triton was in trouble even before their game with Amesbury started.

Cape Ann League All-Star Shannon Sinton was sidelined because of a preseason injury.  The Vikings shortstop will be back with the team in a couple of weeks.

In the season opener for both softball teams Amesbury came away with a decisive, 12-2, win on a cloudy Wednesday afternoon.

The Indians were 17-5 in 2012 and have plenty of that team back.  They had hits and base runners in every inning.

Carolina Merrill

And while the Indians were hitting and running the bases and building up an 8-0 lead, their pitcher (senior Carolina Merrill) held Triton scoreless scattering two hits and striking out five.

Amesbury had thirteen hits (by my count) and took the extra base time after time.

Amanda Boswell was the ideal leadoff batter for Amesbury in this one.  The speedy junior reached base on all five at bats and scored four runs.

Mara Spears absorbed the loss for Triton.  The Viking junior walked only one but despite some pretty good speed couldn’t keep the Indians from making good contact.

Cori Simons had a 2-run single for Triton in the final inning.

This was a non-league game.  The CAL league game between the teams is on April 29th.

Today’s game featured three 2012 CAL All-League players – Cori Simons, Cassie Schultz, and Erin Leary.  In this game, Erin had a home run down the left field line.

Kelsey Trudel, Shannon Sinton, Carolina Merrill, and Amanda Schell made the CAL All-Star team in 2012.

Last time I saw Amesbury play they were losing a tough 2-0 game at Danvers in the post-season tournament.

Triton’s next game is hosting Pentucket on Friday.  Amesbury hosts Georgetown on Thursday.

Triton holds off East Boston 36-27 in non-league girls basketball

(Byfield)  A run of nine unanswered points combined with clutch free throw shooting were keys in Triton getting past East Boston, 36-27, on a snowy Monday night of non-league action.

The Viking girls broke away from an 11-11 tie with a run of points that began late in the second quarter and stretched two minutes into the third quarter.  Their nine-point collection put the home team on top, 20-11.

Thereafter, strong Triton free throw shooting (eight-for-ten) was needed to hold off the fast-closing Jets.  The visitors would get within six (27-21) with 5 ½ minutes left in the game but that was the best they could do.

Megan Muldowney contributed five points in the nine-point run that gave the Vikings separation.  In there was an old-fashioned three as the sophomore went coast-to-coast down the left side and was fouled.

Freshman Christine Ciccone and sophomore Hannah Canning each had a basket in the important Triton run of points.

The hero of the free throw shooting was certainly senior co-captain Harley Wood.  Harley hit on all six attempts including a crucial four during the last 2 ½ minutes of this game.

The Jets were pesky on defense especially in the first half when they caused thirteen Viking turnovers.

A three by sophomore Daniela Villegas tied the Jets with Triton at eleven in the second period.

The teams had played at East Boston earlier in the season and Triton had been the winner, 26-20, so it was easy to imagine another tight game.  However, the nine straight Vikings points appeared, at the moment, to doom such a finish.

But the girls from the Boston City League put five straight points together in the fourth quarter (Daniela Villegas layup and free throw plus a Chuckearah Johnson hook) to make things interesting (27-21) with 5 ½ minutes left.

However,  Triton answered with a Hannah Canning layup, a free throw by Nikki Sullivan, and a jump shot from Kaitlyn Muldowney to restore their double digit lead (32-21) and take command.

Sophomore Jasmine Lemus (8 points) was high scorer for Eastie.

Harley Wood and Hannah Canning topped the Viking point producers.

Triton (2-12) will be at Georgetown tomorrow (Tuesday) night in Cape Ann League action.

East Boston (1-11) had its lone win over Snowden in the Boston City League.

Chuckearah Johnson (7 points) made the game’s highlight shot when she went into the lane and spun out nailing a nifty hook shot.

Manchester-Essex girls get by Triton 37-21 with strong second half

Sydney Christopher (nine points) heads down the lane

Liza Logue (seven points) looks for an opening

Liza Logue (seven points) looks for an opening

(Byfield) Manchester-Essex put together a strong second half and defeated Triton, 37-21, in Cape Ann League girls action on Monday night.

The Vikings (1-10) trailed only by three (17-14) with 3 ½ minutes left in the third quarter but were done in by a ten-point run by the Hornets (4-7) over the next 2 ½ minutes.

This good segment of offense for ME opened up a 27-14 advantage that turnover-prone Triton could not recover from the rest of the way.

The point scorers for the Hornets during the game-deciding run were Maya Heath (two free throws), Sam Taylor (converted rebound), Liza Logue (layup), and Ivy Silag Sterns (layup and jump shot).

The run of points was certainly a factor in the Hornet win but equally important was a second half in which they took better care of the ball.  In the first half ME had fourteen giveaways (by my count) while in the second half the miscues fell to six.  With fewer turnovers the Hornets were able to get more shots and enough of their attempts went in to result in a victory.

Kaitlyn Muldowney (eight points) led Triton in scoring

Kaitlyn Muldowney (eight points) led Triton in scoring

Triton went down 6-0 early but thanks to converted rebounds by Kaitlyn Muldowney and Harley Wood, as well a long shot by Kaitlyn, the Vikings tied the score early in the second quarter.

Triton was within two (13-11) just before halftime but Sydney Christopher nailed a last-second shot for ME giving the visitor a 15-11 halftime lead.

The Vikings were still in contention down only 17-14 after an Amanda Colpitts layup in the third quarter.

However, Triton put together a stretch of poor ball management (five turnovers) that coincided with ME making shots. That combination did in the home team.

The Vikings had seventeen turnovers in the second half while ME had only six.  Both teams applied full-court pressure.

Freshman Sydney Christopher (nine points) led the Hornet scorers.  Liza Logue had seven and Ivy Silag Sterns six.

Kaitlyn Muldowney was Triton’s top point getter with eight points.

The best pass in this game was a long inbounds pass from Sydney Christopher to a breaking Ivy Silag Stearns that set up Ivy for a layup in the final quarter.

Triton and Manchester-Essex met on December 28th in a tournament non-league game which the Hornets won, 35-24.

Division 4 Manchester-Essex was 5-16 last season.  They are now 2-6 in the Cape Ann League.

Division 3 Triton last won four weeks ago defeating East Boston.  The Vikings were 4-16 last season.

There is no pattern to the games I will be cover.  My first inclination is to watch top teams play – I saw the Pentucket girls defeat Billerica.  I expect to see the Central Catholic boys (9-1) face a very good Lowell team on Friday night.

However, I am also drawn to games in which the two teams have losing records.  It is my belief that the intensity will be very high as both teams go after something that has been hard for them to get.

Such was the case in the Triton/ME game.  The effort by both teams was apparent and for 2 ½ quarters this game was even.  Triton gave it their best shot and never let up.
