Dom Sclafani and Carissa Winning breeze in Harrison 5K Run by the Lake

Carissa Winning tops women

Dom Sclafani wins race

(Harrison ME) “Back so soon?”

That’s what someone asked as Dom Sclafani came over the hill past the Harrison boat landing.

But he was back, and it was “soon.”

Dom finished the Harrison 5K Run by the Lake in 16:26 to win for the second straight year.

The recent graduate from Oxford Hills started fast and never let up.  His margin over Oxford Hills’ junior Noah Currier was over 2 ½ minutes.

I asked Dom afterwards about running a race with no challengers.  “I run for fun.  I keep track of how I’m doing in my head.”

Dom will be attending Wheaton College (Norton MA) in the fall.  “I plan to major in Bio/Chem,” he told me.  “Running had nothing to do with my going there but the cross-country coach at Wheaton wants me to run so I probably will.”

Dom (in orange) wastes little time separating from the rest of the runners

Carissa Winning of Norway (ME) ended up 8th overall and dominated the women’s division.  Carissa came across at the post-office finish two minutes and forty-three seconds ahead of the next woman, Carrie Bush.

Nice night for running.  The 7PM starting time makes plenty of sense temperature wise.

The number of runners was well below what it has been in the past.  Reason?  The race is run on Wednesday’s and this year the 4th was a Wednesday.  Usually the race is the night before Old Home Days starts but the 4th had the Bridgton race going.  It just didn’t work out.

The Bommer family took part – Amelia, Arno, Alyssa

This race is more of a family event anyhow.  Most of the spectators know the runners and there are plenty of smiles to be seen.

I asked Dom where his interest in running came from: “I started running toward the end of 8th grade.  I began to take it seriously during my junior year of cross-country at Oxford Hills.”

Dom’s running certainly has improved.  He ran over a minute faster this year.  He also keeps inching up the list of finishers in the prestigious Bridgton 4 on the 4th taking 8th last week.  “I was about 10-20 seconds out of 7th.  I will keep working and see if I can do better.”

I was impressed with the Back 40 stat service which covered this race.  Generally, with previous Harrison 5K’s the results aren’t posted online until the day after the race.  Tonight the results were already online when I left the awards ceremony.  That’s service!  However, the Back 40’s speediness does pressure me to get my coverage posted since I have no excuse to wait until tomorrow to do it.

Dom Sclafani runs away with 2017 Harrison 5K Run by the Lake

Dom Sclafani of Harrison captured the 2017 Harrison 5K Run by the Lake

Notice in the header above that early on Dom was in total command.

(Harrison ME) Fifty yards into Wednesday’s Harrison 5K Run by the Lake Dominic Sclafani had a twenty yard lead.

Then the Oxford Hills graduate really took off!

Dominic would finish the course in an impressive 17:32 leaving the competition far behind.

Gavin Kuns of Bridgton was the first of the 100+ runners chasing second place to arrive.  Gavin arrived over 1 ½ minutes after Dominic reached the Harrison Post Office parking lot.

Two years ago, Dominic finished second in this race as a 15-year-old recording a time of 19:13. The Harrison native has obviously benefitted from spending the last two seasons connected to the Oxford Hills track program.

I could have figured Dominic for an easy night in this race if I had checked further into the results of Tuesday’s prestigious Bridgton 4 on the Fourth.  Dominic was terrific in that event missing a 13th place finish by only two seconds.

Nancy Sullivan was the first female finisher

Nancy Sullivan from Ann Arbor, Michigan timed in at 21:58 to pace the female finishers.

Erik Martin took 3rd this time around after getting 2nd in 2016.

Noah Currier and Arno Bommer were also again among the race’s top ten finishers.  Noah moved up to 5th after being 8th last year.  Arno was 6th which was a place better than 2016.

Jordan Cole, who won this race in 2015 with a time of 18:49, returned to the event and placed 7th.

Eleven-year-old Amelia Bommer dropped thirty seconds from last year’s time and she became the second female to finish the event.

The weather was perfect.  The 7PM start brought on the cooler temperatures.  Running along the lake (Long Lake) added breezes.

Strong effort made, and accomplished, to minimize the effect the race has on Harrison traffic.  Keeping the nearly 200 runners in the breakdown lane eliminated stop-and-waits for those driving through.

Jordan Cole and Shannon LeVangie win Harrison 5K by the Lake

Remarkable finish by 13-year-old Shannon LeVangie earned her the top spot for the women.

(Harrison ME) It wasn’t advertised as a kiddie run but the younger folks dominated the 13th annual Harrison Recreation Department 5K by the Lake on Wednesday night in Harrison, Maine.

Teenagers Jordan Cole (17) and Dom Sclafani (15) were the top two finishers.

Two more teenagers, Shannon LeVangie (13) and Jillian Davis (13) claimed the top spots on the women’s side.

Jordan (18:49) and Dom (19:13) separated from the pack quickly and left little doubt that they would be the top two finishers.

Jordan will be a senior at Lisbon High School and has been very successful versus high school competition. He finished 4th in the Maine state meet in June in the 3200 meter race.

Dom will be a junior at Oxford Hills High School.

Erik Martin (19:40) and Arno Bommer (19:44) duked it out along Route 117 with Erik holding the lead.

Arno, from nearby (?) Houston TX, took second last year at 18:51. A time like that in 2015 would have given Jordan Cole plenty to think about. Last year’s winner David Krall ran the race in 18:11.

Arno also was the only returning top ten finisher from 2014. The turnover in participants in the Harrison 5K continues to amaze me.

Teenager Nick Hoch (14) coasted to 5th over Christopher Hayes of Raymond.

The battle for 7th was a close one. Brian Ladd finished very strong to get the spot.

The battle for 7th was a close one. Brian Ladd finished very strong to get the spot.

The battle for 7th was very competitive. Four runners (Michael Mayetes, Zachary Hoexter, Brian Ladd, and David Brooks) were seen jockeying for position near the Gateway Marina and that jockeying continues past the Grange to the Post Office finish. Brian Ladd got the job done for 7th.

From my Long Lake Park vantage point, I was quite sure that Jillian Davis would be the girls’ winner. But that is not the way it turned out. Somewhere between Long Lake Park and the finish, Shannon LeVangie (Hanover, MA) gained ground at a remarkable rate to nip Jillian by two seconds.

Misty Brown of Wilmington, North Carolina finished 3rd in the women’s division.

The weather was pleasant: low 70’s with a little breeze.

Good idea by those in charge of the race to limit the amount of time the runners interfered with traffic. Once the runners got down to the Harrison Boat Launch they were limited to the well-marked breakdown lane (on the Route 117 part) the rest of the race. Only problem? The limited space made it tough for runners trying to pass other runners especially near the end of the race on 117.
