Rockport Advances 1-0 on PKs Past Lynnfield to D3 North Semifinals

Keady Segel and Jerry Reid walk with the referee to face game-deciding penalty kicks.

(Manchester-by-the-Sea) When you’re dressed in pink and wearing shades (at night) you’d better be good because everyone knows where you are.

It worked for Rockport goalie Keady Segel at very windy Hyland Field and his Vikings won on penalty kicks to oust Lynnfield, 1-0, on Wednesday night in the D3 North quarterfinals and advance to a Friday game and a return date with defending D3 state champs, Weston.

Weston took out Rockport last year, 3-0, in the D3 North finals.

Rockport (16-3-1) has now defeated Lynnfield (11-6-3) four straight including twice in the postseason. However, from where I was watching, either team would have won this game deservedly in regulation and during the two overtimes. There were few, if any glittering chances, and both teams were solid in goal.

The good-sized crowd saw a full game, plus two overtimes of excellent high school soccer. The referees were super even cautioning some in the Lynnfield crowd for their commentary. I also liked it that diving by both teams went unrewarded.

But the kid in pink turned out to be the difference when the game got to the penalty kicks level.

Lynnfield certainly didn’t do themselves any favors when they missed the net entirely on two of their four attempts. But maybe the Rockport goalie’s reputation (2-time CAL player-of-the-year) had something to do with it. On Lynnfield’s second attempt (by Stephen Knox), Keady did make the save.

Keady Segel lines up his penalty kick.

With Rockport up 2-1 in penalty kicks, Keady took his turn as shooter. He approached the ball doing a stutter step and hit a low shot home to increase the lead to 3-1. When Lynnfield’s 4th shooter (Stephen Carangelo) followed by missing the net the Rockport celebration began.

Before the game, I was sure that the wind would be influential but it wasn’t despite being steady and possibly reaching 30MPH. The two goalies certainly gave up distance when kicking into it. Keady got into some serious trouble once when he kicked a ball very high – it practically came back to him. With the wind, however, he made one noteworthy kick – a two-bouncer to Jerry Reid in the Lynnfield goal from the other end!

Rockport team starts celebrating.

Ipswich Soccer Girls Reach Semi-Finals in D3 North With 1-0 Win Over Shawsheen

Courtney Long drills the winning goal past Shawsheen’s flinching Alyssa Martucci in the Ipswich D3 North win at Billerica on Tuesday afternoon.

(Billerica) It was almost a year ago to the day on the same field against the same team.  This time, however, there was a different result as the Ipswich girls soccer team eliminated #1 seed Shawsheen, 1-0, to advance to the semi-finals of the Division 3 North tournament.

The #9 seed Tigers (10-6-4) made a goal by Courtney Long in the first half’s drizzly conditions stand up.  Shawsheen (15-2-2), from the Commonwealth Athletic League, had a first round bye while Ipswich had to get by St.Mary’s on Sunday to reach this game.

I thought that the Tigers were a step quicker than the Rams most of the afternoon.  I never saw any sort of dangerous direct shot at Ipswich goalie Hannah O’Flynn in this contest.  In fact, Hannah’s father, Dr. Hugh O’Flynn, had more action than she did as he was on the field with five injured players (by my count) during the game.

I had a good look at Courtney’s first-half goal.  Ipswich had been awarded a direct kick.  The Rams set up a wall that might have blocked Courtney’s shot (painfully) but as she struck the shot the end girl on the wall (Alyssa Martucci) flinched to the right leaving an opening.  (Maybe the shot would have gone in whether she had moved to her right or not.)  Anyhow, the ball hit near the right corner at the bottom of the top crossbar and caromed down across the goal-line.

I don’t think that there was another open shot at either goal the rest of the game.  Hannah Weagle came close to getting a rebound in front of the Ram net in the second half and later Mary Krathwohl nearly broke through for a good shot.

Samantha Brown blocks a Sabrina Gomes (#7) clear.

One painful moment late was when Samantha Brown ended up with her face in front of a Sabrina Gomes clearing kick.  Sabrina was apologetic afterwards.

The Tigers now move on to the semi-final round of the tournament.  They will be facing Cape Ann League opponent Lynnfield (#4 seed) at 2:30 PM at Manning (turf) Field in Lynn on Thursday afternoon. These teams split during the regular season with Lynnfield winning at home in September while Ipswich won at home in October.

(All the information is from my own personal observation.  Regard any inaccuracies from that vantage point, please.)

Ipswich Girls Soccer Drops Penalty Kicks Toughie to Shawsheen Tech

Ipswich goal scored by 2 11-10-09

Two overtimes didn’t settle it, nor did the first five penalty kicks.  The 6th penalty kick gave the Shawsheen Tech Rams the Division 3 North tournament victory in girls soccer after their keeper made a save and the Ipswich keeper wasn’t as fortunate.

It goes down as a 2-1 quarter finals loss for the Tigers and a tough exit.  Shawsheen goes on to play Greater Lowell, a team according to the Lowell Sun, that they have already defeated three times.  The winner gets Georgetown in the North final.  The Royals absolutely crushed #1 seed Matignon 9-1 today (November 11th) at Lynn.

WHINER ALERT: I know what the MIAA letters stand for but at Shawsheen I’m thinking it could have meant – Missing In Action Again!

What actually does a school get for being part of that organization?  This was a tournament game, wasn’t it?  Missing as far as I could tell were; (1) player programs, (2) player introductions, (3) the national anthem, and (4) some sort of score clock.

Oh, and the Shawsheen field doesn’t have any lights.  You start a game at 2PM around here, when the sun sets before 4:30 PM, you weren’t planning for much extended play.  Why not 1PM??

And where was the news coverage?  Why do Ipswich folks subscribe to the Salem Evening News?  Wow, next day they had a boxscore!  Ipswich Chronicle – Where’s your game story?  Waiting until Friday?

Anyhow, I stood at the Shawsheen end through two halves and the first overtime and took pictures.  Devoid of a program, all I have are pictures of the part I stayed for.  Thanks to Ipswich AD Tom Gallagher for helping me sort out the names and numbers.
