(Byfield MA) Triton finally found happiness in the New Year with a 63-40 victory over Shawsheen in non-league action on Wednesday night.

Both teams entered the contest winless in two attempts in 2015.

Shawsheen (2-3) stayed close for a quarter and even had a 14-12 edge 1+ minutes into the second quarter but after that Triton’s long-range accuracy enabled them to pull away for good.

The Vikings (2-6) drained nine long ones.  The Rams clicked twice from beyond the arc (Sean Hines) in the first period but came up empty thereafter.

Cam Armand (13 points) connected three times for Triton from downtown.  Cam’s first of two three’s in the 2nd quarter put the home team in front for good.  Cam’s second three ended the first half putting Triton up 26-18.

The team from Billerica was still within comeback range trailing 44-34 with a minute left in the 3rd quarter.  However, Triton put a 10-1 segment together over the next five minutes of playing time into the final quarter and gained separation, 54-35.  Eric Rybicki had two three’s to pace the Vikings in that run of good offense.

Coach Dave Clay used everyone on his bench.  There was no noticeable dropoff in hustle no matter who was playing.

Senior Nick Venora led all scorers with fourteen points.

Ellsworth Rogers now has the cast off his arm.  He is hoping to return to action for Triton later in January.

Shawsheen are Division 3 and play in the Commonwealth Athletic Conference.  The Rams were 6-14 last season.  Their next game will be against CAC opponent Chelsea at home on Friday night (7PM).

Triton, from the Cape Ann League, faces undefeated CAL opponent Lynnfield (8-0) at home on Friday night (6:30PM).
Triton had seventeen turnovers while Shawsheen had sixteen.

Fenway routs Shawsheen 71-45 to advance to Division 4 North finals

(Malden) Fenway blew out Shawsheen Tech, 71-45, with amazing segments of points/defense in each half and now move on to the Division 4 North finals on Friday at Emmanuel College.

The Panthers (13-7) are the reigning Division Four champs and I would expect them to be holding MIAA championship hardware again early next week at the TD North Garden after two more wins.

I thought that #3 seed Shawsheen Tech (18-4) might be able to compete with #10 seed Fenway based on last year’s D4 North finals.  Shawsheen only trailed Fenway by three (29-26) after three quarters a year ago before losing, 49-34.

In the 2012-13 rematch, the Rams for 1 ½ quarters looked capable of holding their own.  The team from Billerica took care of the ball and made shots.  The result was that with four minutes left in the second quarter Shawsheen was in front, 19-13.  During the great early going, Emily Irwin contributed seven points and Ari Medeiros five points.

Then the first segment of amazing points/defense kicked in for Fenway.  Over the next five minutes of playing time, stretching into the start of the second half, the Panthers outscored Shawsheen, 22-1.  (That is not a typo!)

The Rams fell victim to Panther full-court pressure (ten turnovers) and went out of synch on possession after possession.  That eruption and disruption put Fenway ahead, 35-20, with most of the second half left to play.

Five of the Fenway baskets, during the first surge, were directly off of steals deep in the Shawsheen backcourt.

The hardest pill for the Ram fans was the eight points tallied by the Panthers in the last fifty seconds of the first half.  Blame Tajaynay Veiga (24 points).  The talented senior had four free throws, a steal that led to a layup, and a layup in that last fifty seconds.

Tajaynay was right back at it to start the second half with a three and a converted rebound.

The Rams were able to chip four points off that 15-point deficit and trail by eleven (48-37) with 1:42 left in the third quarter.  Two three’s by Ari Medeiros (15 points) and one by Stephanie Champoux (9 points) keyed Shawsheen.

I mentioned earlier that there were two segments of amazing points/defense by Fenway.  The second one lasted 6+ minutes stretching into the final quarter and was a 20-1 run.

The twenty Fenway points were spread among eight players, many seeing their first action of the night.  The Panther shots were certainly falling.

So Shawsheen took a 68-37 deficit into the final 3 ½ minutes of the game.  It makes me wonder why they don’t have a mercy rule in basketball the way they do in softball.

Trying to wrap my brain around the stat that for 11 ½ minutes of this game, Fenway outscored the Rams, 42-2!
A little math tells me that Shawsheen outscored the Panthers, 43-29, in the other minutes.

Fenway will face either #1 seed Whittier or Mystic Valley in the D4 North finals on Friday.  Whittier coach Kevin Bradley was in the house and I suspect that Mystic Valley was on hand to get a preview also.  Two things they had better be prepared for: Tajaynay and turnovers.

Freshman Takora McIntyre had thirteen points for Fenway.  She was also a big part of the Fenway pressure.

The Fenway pressure seemed at its best on the second pass.  Shawsheen could enter the ball but when the double-team came at them they either dribbled or passed into a turnover.

Small/quiet crowd at Malden High School for a semi-final game, I thought.  It went library quiet on some of the free throws.

The Fenway record (13-7) would be 17-3 if not for the forfeiting of four games (according to a story in the Lowell Sun) because of using JV players in varsity games for too long, violating MIAA rules.  In the case of Fenway, I suspect that the JV players were being used because the score was so lopsided in Fenway’s favor.  But rules are rules!

Ipswich Soccer Girls Reach Semi-Finals in D3 North With 1-0 Win Over Shawsheen

Courtney Long drills the winning goal past Shawsheen’s flinching Alyssa Martucci in the Ipswich D3 North win at Billerica on Tuesday afternoon.

(Billerica) It was almost a year ago to the day on the same field against the same team.  This time, however, there was a different result as the Ipswich girls soccer team eliminated #1 seed Shawsheen, 1-0, to advance to the semi-finals of the Division 3 North tournament.

The #9 seed Tigers (10-6-4) made a goal by Courtney Long in the first half’s drizzly conditions stand up.  Shawsheen (15-2-2), from the Commonwealth Athletic League, had a first round bye while Ipswich had to get by St.Mary’s on Sunday to reach this game.

I thought that the Tigers were a step quicker than the Rams most of the afternoon.  I never saw any sort of dangerous direct shot at Ipswich goalie Hannah O’Flynn in this contest.  In fact, Hannah’s father, Dr. Hugh O’Flynn, had more action than she did as he was on the field with five injured players (by my count) during the game.

I had a good look at Courtney’s first-half goal.  Ipswich had been awarded a direct kick.  The Rams set up a wall that might have blocked Courtney’s shot (painfully) but as she struck the shot the end girl on the wall (Alyssa Martucci) flinched to the right leaving an opening.  (Maybe the shot would have gone in whether she had moved to her right or not.)  Anyhow, the ball hit near the right corner at the bottom of the top crossbar and caromed down across the goal-line.

I don’t think that there was another open shot at either goal the rest of the game.  Hannah Weagle came close to getting a rebound in front of the Ram net in the second half and later Mary Krathwohl nearly broke through for a good shot.

Samantha Brown blocks a Sabrina Gomes (#7) clear.

One painful moment late was when Samantha Brown ended up with her face in front of a Sabrina Gomes clearing kick.  Sabrina was apologetic afterwards.

The Tigers now move on to the semi-final round of the tournament.  They will be facing Cape Ann League opponent Lynnfield (#4 seed) at 2:30 PM at Manning (turf) Field in Lynn on Thursday afternoon. These teams split during the regular season with Lynnfield winning at home in September while Ipswich won at home in October.

(All the information is from my own personal observation.  Regard any inaccuracies from that vantage point, please.)

Courtney Long of Ipswich High School Scores Tourney Game Winner Over Shawsheen

I took this one in drizzly Billerica (note the umbrella) in a D3 quaterfinal game between Ipswich and Shawsheen.  This shot by Courtney Long produced the only goal of the game.  I positioned myself to the left of the Shawsheen goal to take pictures.  This was a direct kick because of a violation.  The beauty of the shot is that the Shawsheen girl turned away from the shot and opened up a direct opening to the corner.

I used my Canon Rebel T1i on sports mode and continuous shooting.  The overcast conditions impacted the clarity for sure.

This picture appeared in The Town Common in the November 17-23 issue.

Ipswich Girls Soccer Drops Penalty Kicks Toughie to Shawsheen Tech

Ipswich goal scored by 2 11-10-09

Two overtimes didn’t settle it, nor did the first five penalty kicks.  The 6th penalty kick gave the Shawsheen Tech Rams the Division 3 North tournament victory in girls soccer after their keeper made a save and the Ipswich keeper wasn’t as fortunate.

It goes down as a 2-1 quarter finals loss for the Tigers and a tough exit.  Shawsheen goes on to play Greater Lowell, a team according to the Lowell Sun, that they have already defeated three times.  The winner gets Georgetown in the North final.  The Royals absolutely crushed #1 seed Matignon 9-1 today (November 11th) at Lynn.

WHINER ALERT: I know what the MIAA letters stand for but at Shawsheen I’m thinking it could have meant – Missing In Action Again!

What actually does a school get for being part of that organization?  This was a tournament game, wasn’t it?  Missing as far as I could tell were; (1) player programs, (2) player introductions, (3) the national anthem, and (4) some sort of score clock.

Oh, and the Shawsheen field doesn’t have any lights.  You start a game at 2PM around here, when the sun sets before 4:30 PM, you weren’t planning for much extended play.  Why not 1PM??

And where was the news coverage?  Why do Ipswich folks subscribe to the Salem Evening News?  Wow, next day they had a boxscore!  Ipswich Chronicle – Where’s your game story?  Waiting until Friday?

Anyhow, I stood at the Shawsheen end through two halves and the first overtime and took pictures.  Devoid of a program, all I have are pictures of the part I stayed for.  Thanks to Ipswich AD Tom Gallagher for helping me sort out the names and numbers.
