(Georgetown MA) Georgetown defeated #11 seed Matignon, 7-3, in a Division 4 North quarterfinals matchup on sunny Saturday afternoon.

The win puts the #3 seed Royals (14-7) into the D4 North semifinals for the second straight season. This time around they’ll face #2 seed Boston International next Wednesday.

Senior Dan Manning had a big day for the Royals scoring twice, getting three hits, stealing two bases, and driving in two runs. The Georgetown catcher also gunned out two Warriors attempting to steal.

In defeating the Warriors (6-14), the home team took liberties on the base paths (two double steals) and advantage of Matignon wildness (four hit batsmen).

Georgetown had nine hits and bunched eight of their hits into the first three innings and took a 4-1 lead.

The Warriors totaled eight hits and had hits in six innings and left baserunners in each of those innings. Georgetown starter Pat Slack (5 2/3 innings) allowed only two runs.

One of the baserunners gunned down by Dan Manning was JT Nichols in the first inning. The inning started with Nick Valdario walking and JT reaching on 3B Kyle Nelson’s error. Brian Raimo’s sacrifice fly got Nick to third. That was when JT tried to steal and didn’t make it. Cam Monagle followed with an RBI double to the fence in left.

Georgetown got that run back in the bottom of the first inning. Two batters (Ben Noelk and Kyle Nelson) were hit by pitches and both moved into scoring position thanks to a well-executed double steal. Pat Slack’s single to left brought Ben home to tie the score. Matignon starter Jimmy DeAngelo limited the damage to one run by retiring Ryan Slack and Chris Chiklakis to end the inning.

The Royals took the lead for good with a run in the second. Dan Manning singled to deep short and then stole second and third. Kevin Terban’s hot shot over the third base bag scored Dan.

Georgetown picked up two more runs in the third. Pat Slack, after nearly being doubled off first on his brother Ryan’s line drive to second baseman JT Nichols, was driven home on Chris Chiklakis’ shot to the fence in left. When Chris tried to steal third the throw from catcher Kevin Olsen went past third allowing Chris to cross with the Royals fourth run.

Matignon (Catholic Central League) cut into their 4-1 deficit with a run in the fourth. Tyler Hanlon singled to deep short and came all the way around on a double by Kevin Olsen to center. CF Mike Goddu dove after Kevin’s long shot and just missed getting it.

Georgetown collected three runs worth of insurance in the 5th inning. The first two Royals (Ryan Slack and Chris Chiklakis) reached and executed the team’s second double steal. Later LF Tyler Hanlon rushed in on Dan Manning’s sinking line drive and had the ball one-hop off of him allowing both G’Town runners to get home. Jared Fernandes came on to relieve Jimmy DeAngelo at this point. A single (Mike Goddu) and a sacrifice fly (Colby Ingraham) produced Georgetown’s seventh and final run.

Matignon put a run on the board against the relief combo (Alex Bornholdt and Duncan Hough) in the final inning. JT Nichols’ fielders choice tallied Jared Fernandes.

Weather? After getting caught in the rain at Tewksbury yesterday I was leery of the clouds I saw today but the sun dominated the quick (less than two hours) game.

Mike McPherson hit into the rare 9-6 force out when Georgetown rightfielder Ben Noelk dropped a routine fly in the sixth inning but recovered to force Cam Monagle at second.

Georgetown third baseman Kyle Nelson chased a foul ball out of my sight into the crowd in the Matignon seventh. It sounded as if Kyle introduced himself to a lawn chair but he quickly returned to the playing field.

Jared Fernandes and Cam Monagle paced Matignon with two hits each.

Mike Goddu and Pat Slack had two hits for Georgetown.

Solid performance earns Newburyport 10-3 victory over Georgetown

(Newburyport MA) Newburyport put together a nice mix of pitching, hitting, and fielding to defeat Georgetown, 10-3, on Wednesday afternoon at cold and breezy Cashman Park in Cape Ann League softball.

The Clippers (6-4) seemed fully recovered from an excruciating 5-4 loss to Manchester-Essex on Monday.

NHS pitcher Vicki Allman retired the first ten Royals she faced and ended up with nine strikeouts. The senior walked one batter and allowed only one extra base hit.

Carley Siemasko led a 13-hit Newburyport attack with three hits including a home run and five RBI. Junior Ashley Hodge also had three hits for the Clippers. This was a game in which Newburyport didn’t have any walks. Maybe they didn’t want to stand in the cold any longer than they had to??

The Clippers defense also had a good game with only one error (shortstop Morgan Johnson).

Georgetown pitcher Danielle Quercia kept Newburyport off the scoreboard in the first inning by striking out Stephanie Gleason with two runners in scoring position.

The Clippers broke through in the second inning. A throwing error by GHS rightfielder Maggie Noelk enabled Lauren Singer to score. Later, Jade Carpenter’s fielder’s choice brought Vicki Allman across.

The visitors unraveled defensively in the third inning with three errors. Those miscues combined with five Newburyport hits paved the way for eleven Clippers to bat and six of them to score.

This was the inning Carley Siemasko homered. The ball went over leftfielder Gianna Faragi’s head and rolled to the fence. Later in the same inning, Carley singled to drive in two more runs.

Molly Kelley was called out for interfering with shortstop Kylie Hayward in that six-run third.

The Royals (2-6) cut into their 8-0 deficit with runs in the 4th and 5th.

In the 4th, Jen Nutter reached third after a bunt single, fielder’s choice, and a stolen base. Freshman Kylie Hayward’s bunt single delivered Jen with the first G’Town run.

In the 5th, two singles (Danielle Quercia and Hannah Jannell) were followed by Morgan Johnson’s error on a hard-hit grounder by Maddy Crateau that Danielle came home on.

Carley Siemasko had two more RBI in the Newburyport fifth. Both Ashley Hodge and Amy Sullivan singled and moved into scoring position. Carley did the rest.

Georgetown ran into outs in the 6th and 7th innings. Samantha Newbury was picked off first after Molly Kelley caught a popup in the sixth. In the seventh, Shelby O’Brien speared a line drive at third and caught Hannah Jannell off of first before she could get back.

The Royals, despite the double play, did get a run in the seventh inning. Junior Kaylie Sapienza opened with a long triple to left. Hannah Jannell then placed a full-swing blooper in between the pitcher and the second baseman getting Kaylie home.

Injuries to Dana Edwards, Emily Fraser, and Meghan Stanton kept them out of today’s game.

Georgetown is scheduled to be at Pentucket tomorrow. Newburyport will be at Rockport on Friday.

The Royals have lost five of their last six games.

Danielle Quercia and Hannah Jannell had two hits for Georgetown. The Royals ended up with eight hits.

Vicki Allman and Ashley Hodge each scored two runs.

Jen Nutter made a nice catch in centerfield in the first inning to prevent a run from scoring.

Weather? After being at Newburyport High School on Tuesday, today at Cashman wasn’t that bad. It certainly helped that today’s softball game lasted 75 minutes while the baseball game on Tuesday was more than twice as long.

Pat Slack and Georgetown hitting attack lead to 5-0 win over Amesbury

(Amesbury MA) Now, that’s more like it! (That was a reference to the weather.)

Georgetown had everything go their way as they defeated Amesbury, 5-0, on a sunny Saturday morning of Cape Ann League baseball.

The Royals (4-1) rode the arm of senior Pat Slack (two hitter) and a non-stop hitting attack (nine hits) to the victory.

While G’Town had hits and stranded baserunners (nine) in every inning, the Indians went through 4 1/3 innings without a baserunner. Nick Hawrylciw was the first to reach for Amesbury beating out (barely!) a grounder to shortstop Colby Ingraham. Later in that fifth inning Spencer Fournier would get a no-questions-asked single to right center. But those two hits were all that Amesbury (3-3) could muster.

Spencer Fournier’s hit to right center was only one of two balls to reach the Georgetown outfield. Pat Slack was that dominating in the complete game shutout. He had four strikeouts and kept the ball down. First baseman Nick Correnti ended up with ten putouts.

Junior Sam Burnham pitched six innings for Amesbury (3-3) in his first varsity start. Levi Burrill covered the last inning for the Indians.

Sam Burnham was charged with five runs but only two of them were earned.

The first of the unearned runs opened the scoring for the visitors in the first inning. After Colby Ingraham doubled with two outs, AHS shortstop Ben Cullen booted Kyle Nelson’s grounder allowing Colby Ingraham to get home.

Three more runs came across for the Royals in the second inning. Kevin Terban singled to left and was driven home by Chris Chiklakis’s triple to right center. An infield hit to deep short by Ben Noelk enabled Chris to get G’Town’s third run. A two-out throwing error by shortstop Ben Cullen followed adding a fourth run to the Royals’ total.

Georgetown’s third unearned run came in the sixth inning. Left fielder Brad Kelleher had trouble retrieving Mike Goddu’s single and as a result Mike reached second. Sam Burnham balked Mike to third. Sam would have gotten out of the inning but another infield error (second baseman Jared Dupere) gave Georgetown its fifth run.

So despite all the Georgetown hits and baserunners, this could have been a much closer game minus the five Amesbury miscues.

The Royals, meanwhile, were flawless in the field with few tough chances. Amesbury’s hardest shot, other than Spencer Fournier’s single, was a line drive toward second by Mac Short that Kevin Terban snared about shin level in the fourth inning.

Pat Slack (three hits) had two doubles that were part of Georgetown’s four extra-base hits.

Amesbury starter Sam Burnham took a hard shot off the shin in the third inning but recovered to toss the hitter out at first.

Colby Ingraham

Cape Ann League All-League performer Colby Ingraham is back. He suffered a torn ACL in football. He has a noticeable limp but still has enough range to handle the shortstop position. Colby almost got himself into trouble with the first base umpire when he had a loud reaction to his throw in the 5th inning that didn’t result in an out at first. GHS coach Justin Spurr was quick to pay a visit to the field to cool things down.

Mac Short, Colby Ingraham, and Ben Noelk were Cape Ann League All-League players in 2013. Pat Slack was a CAL All-Star last year.

Kevin Terban had two hits and scored two runs for the Royals.

Ben Cullen showed terrific range tracking down a first inning foul popup down the third baseline.

I’m guessing on this one but I believe that Amesbury sophomore second baseman Jared Dupere is the brother of Sarah Dupere the very talented senior softball pitcher at Governor’s Academy. I saw Sarah K seven Pingree batters and get three hits herself in a 13-0 shutout against the Highlanders.

Next game for Georgetown in Tuesday (10AM) hosting Hamilton-Wenham. Amesbury will host Pentucket (3:45PM) on the same day.

The weather was terrific. There was a pretty good crowd on hand and almost all of them were over-dressed. It’s just hard to believe so far this season that sunny, breezy, and 60’s could all come together in a pleasant outdoor experience!

Amesbury experience shows in 5-1 softball win over Georgetown

(Amesbury) Experienced Amesbury opened their 2014 season with a 5-1 victory over Georgetown on a blustery Wednesday afternoon in Cape Ann League softball.

The Indians (1-0) were flawless in the field and capitalized on the inexperience of the Royals (0-1) especially in the outfield.

Minus graduated hitters such as Ashley Valme, Janine Fatal, Erin Leary, and Cassie Schultz, Amesbury couldn’t separate from the determined Royals. This was a 3-1 game going into the bottom of the sixth inning.

In the decisive sixth, sophomore Zoe Fitzgerald hit a hard shot into right center that split freshmen outfielders Samantha Newbury and Dana Edwards on the ground. By the time the two outfielders could retrieve the ball, and get it back into the infield, Zoe had reached home (with Amesbury’s 4th run) without a slide despite slowing up at third base.

The Indians added more insurance in the same frame. Lauren Fedorchak singled to deep short and took second on a wild throw by SS Maddy Crateau. Lauren then scored Run #5 on freshman Maddie Napoli’s blooper into right field.

Senior Alexi Boswell worked some base running magic to produce a run in the first inning. After Alexi reached on a single, Lucy Scholz put down a bunt that activated the Georgetown infield. Third baseman Hannah Jannell fielded the bunt and made an accurate throw to second baseman Maddy Crateau covering first to get Lucy. However that defensive arrangement left shortstop Kylie Hayward covering both second and third. So Alexi ran right past second toward uncovered third. Maddy Crateau threw the ball past shortstop Kylie Hayward who was racing Alexi to third and Alexi came home with Amesbury’s first run.

More of that inexperience/experience thing kicked in for a second first inning run. Senior Amanda Schell singled to right but the ball got past rightfielder Dana Edwards and Amanda ended up at third. Senior Rachel Cyr singled to center scoring Amanda with Amesbury’s second score.

When Autumn Kligerman hit a fly ball to center that centerfielder Samantha Newbury couldn’t find in the sun, you sensed that a very bad inning was underway for the Royals. But credit Georgetown starter Danielle Quercia. She got Zoe Fitzgerald to strike out and Sammy Stone to line to first ending the inning without any more runs allowed.

Amesbury would build their lead to 3-0 in the second inning. Lauren Fedorchak singled to center and Maddie Napoli sacrifice bunted her to second. Lucy Scholz delivered Lauren with a two-out single to center.

Georgetown had five hits, a walk, and five stranded runners to show for five innings of play. In the sixth the Royals used aggressive base running to get on the scoreboard. Maddy Crateau and Jen Nutter set the stage with infield hits after one out. When catcher Amanda Schell tried to pick Jen off of first (it was verrry close!) Maddie reached third. And then when Jen stole second on another very close play Maddy raced home.

The key to that inning for Georgetown was being aggressive. The key for Amesbury was Rachel Cyr. How? The senior pitcher struck out three Royals looking to keep other Royals off the bases and limit the damage to one run.

Former CAL All-League shortstop Amanda Schell made her debut at catcher for the Indians. Amanda replaces Cassie Schultz who is now playing at Assumption.

Rightfielder Alexi Boswell showed her arm in the seventh inning. When sophomore Maggie Noelk hit a liner to right, Alexi picked up the ball on the hop and threw Maggie out at first.

Amesbury starter Rachel Cyr allowed seven hits, one walk and struck out four. She also successfully handled three chances. Rachel, who replaces Carolina Merrill, will do most of the pitching for the Indians.

Georgetown starter Danielle Quercia gave up eleven hits but only five runs despite four errors behind her. Danielle ends a run of eight years of the Erlandson sisters pitching.

Amesbury was 19-3 last season while Georgetown was 14-6. Both teams are now in Division 3.

Jen Nutter led Georgetown with two hits.

Amanda Schell, Autumn Kligerman, and Lauren Fedorchak each had two hits for Amesbury.

Tough second inning for Georgetown. Jen Nutter singled and reached second on a wild pitch with no outs. However, Emily Fraser lined to Autumn Kligerman at 3B and the Amesbury junior doubled Jen off of second. As bad luck (for Georgetown) would have it, next batter Hannah Jannell singled to center. Could have been a run??

Amesbury junior Meagan Aponas had a pinch-hit single in the 6th but got caught in a rundown.

The game was originally scheduled for Georgetown but field conditions there weren’t good.

The temperatures were in the 50’s but the gusty winds made that number meaningless when it came to deciding what to wear. Dress for winter until further notice!

Terrific shooting sends Georgetown past Amesbury 73-56

(Amesbury MA) Georgetown made shots from just about everywhere and overwhelmed Amesbury, 73-56, on Monday night in Cape Ann League action.

Before the game, it was announced that former Georgetown coach Mike Rowinski had passed away today from an undisclosed illness. Mike had a 90-72 record in eight years coaching the Royals and had taken a leave of absence this season to deal with health issues. His family is in my prayers.

The Royals (4-2 CAL/6-2 overall) destroyed the Amesbury zone defense with seven 3’s and seven baskets on rebounds. If you’re playing a zone you know that the opponent will get outside chances…….you hope they’ll miss. Giving up shots on the inside is supposed to be lessened by a zone defense. However, on this night G’Town was trouble from any distance!

The scrappy Indians (2-4 CAL/2-5 overall) made a game of it early. After Georgetown ran nine straight (three offensive rebound conversions and a Ben Denoncour three) to grab a 23-15 lead after one quarter, the Indians rallied back. Pat Halloran, Pat Scanlon, and Fred Halloran put an eight-spot together to tie the score.

But the rest of that second quarter senior Ben Denoncour drained three 3’s and led the visitors to a 43-35 halftime advantage.

Ben made five long ones in the first half. All of them were from the left corner in front of a very active Amesbury student section. Didn’t seem to faze him!

The Indians were still within nine (46-37) early in the second half before a six-point Royals run (two inside scores by Pat Bjork and one by Matt Gott) boosted their lead to 52-37. The margin reached twenty (70-50) halfway through the fourth quarter and reserves for both teams saw action the rest of the way.

6-5 Pat Bjork (19 points) caused problems for Amesbury every time he handled the ball in close. Pat was a CAL All-League player in 2012-13.

The surprise, to me, was Matt Gott. Matt (18 points) is listed at 6-2 but was able to find room in close to notch five baskets. Matt was a CAL All-Star last season.

Senior Ben Noelk added twelve points for Georgetown.

Amesbury gave Georgetown too many good looks. They also struggled against the G’Town zone to get good shots for themselves, especially second shots. Missing nine of fifteen free throw attempts just made a tough night even more trying for the Indians.

Jack Fortin (13 points) and Pat Scanlon (10 points) paced Amesbury.

The Indians have now lost four straight.

Two first-year coaches (Tom Comeau – Amesbury and Barry Spears – Georgetown) were involved in this one.

The Royals were 4-16 last season while Amesbury was 10-11.

The Amesbury student section stayed active to the end led by their cheerleaders.

Amesbury will host Masconomet tomorrow night at 6:30PM while Georgetown will host North Reading at the same time.

Georgetown defeats Ipswich 5-2 to run winning streak to seven

(Ipswich) Georgetown won its seventh straight game (including the five that earned them the Division 4 title) as they defeated Ipswich, 5-2, on a pleasant Tuesday afternoon in Ipswich.

The Royals (2-0) collected two unearned runs in the 4th inning and survived a bases loaded, no-one-out situation in the 6th inning to gain the win in their Cape Ann League opener.

Ben Noelk and Tom Pingree each had two RBI for Georgetown. CJ Ingraham had three of the Royals’ nine hits and also drove in a run.

Junior Patrick Slack was the winning pitcher. He scattered three hits and K’d seven Tigers during six innings of work. Dave Ingraham pitched the seventh and recorded a 1-2-3 final inning.

Patrick Slack (1-0) put himself into some serious trouble in the sixth but managed to escape with minimal damage. Four batters into the sixth inning Patrick had given up a single (Ryan Law), made a bad throw to second on a grounder (Josh Guertin), walked a batter (Henry Sacco), and hit another batter (Kyle Barber).

With one run in (score now 4-2) and more a distinct possibility, the drawn in G’town infield forced a run at the plate. Then Patrick K’d pinch-hitter Jordan Thibault and got Eric Gongas to end the threat grounding out to third.

The Royals broke open a 1-1 game in the 4th inning with two unearned runs both scored with two outs. A Dave Ingraham single and a walk to Mike Goddu put runners on base. An error by Tiger shortstop Mike Savoie on sophomore Kyle Nelson’s sharp grounder extended the inning with the bases loaded. Ben Noelk made Ipswich pay as he sliced a single in front of centerfielder Ryan Law delivering Dave Ingraham and Mike Goddu.

Alex Amoroso went the first four innings for Ipswich (0-1) and Sean Whooley the final three.

Georgetown touched Alex for a run in the first. A single and steal by leadoff batter Patrick Slack was followed by a run-scoring double by CJ Ingraham (3 hits).

Ipswich answered right back in the bottom of the first. Alex Amoroso reached on an infield hit and took second on a wild pitch. The Tiger senior reached third thanks to Ryan Law’s sacrifice bunt and scored on Kyle Barber’s rip off third baseman Tom Pingree’s glove.

The Royals picked up the two unearned runs in the fourth to lead 3-1 before adding another score in the fifth off of Sean Whooley. Colby Ingraham reached on a fielder’s choice, stole second, and was sent home by Tom Pingree’s single to right center.

Up 4-1, the Royals survived the Tiger threat in the sixth allowing just one run. Georgetown pushed across its 5th run in the seventh. CJ Ingraham singled, stole second, and was delivered with two outs by Tom Pingree.

The two teams will meet again in two weeks at Georgetown. The Royals next game will be hosting Manchester-Essex on Thursday. The Tigers will entertain Amesbury next Tuesday at 10AM.

Division 3 Ipswich was 6-13 last season but lost eight of those game by one run.

GHS coach Justin Spurr has thirteen players back from last season’s championship team. Star Ryan Browner is now at Southern Maine but there is still plenty of talent on the roster. It is not hard to imagine Georgetown still playing games in June.

Undefeated Ipswich dominates Georgetown 74-20 in girls basketball

(Ipswich) That’s two straight routs by Ipswich to start season.

The Tigers (2-0) buried Georgetown, 74-20, in a Cape Ann League game on Friday night in their home opener.

A week ago the Ipswich girls opened their season on the road with a lopsided, 66-21, win over Amesbury.

I thought that Georgetown (2-2) might offer a challenge to the Tigers since they have 1000-point scorer Kristin Hogan as well as defender/shooter Marissa Agganis. But it didn’t matter.

It was clear right off that the Royals would struggle against the aggressive Tiger defense. Before the first quarter was half over the visitors already had seven turnovers and trailed, 6-0.

Ali Newbury’s layup from Kristin Hogan broke the ice for GTown with 4:15 left in the first quarter.

The Tigers followed with a productive run that ended any outcome suspense that may have existed. Over the next 5 ½ minutes of playing time, extending into the second quarter, Ipswich dominated Georgetown to the tune of, 22-2, including one stretch of sixteen unanswered points.

The result of this terrific offense/defense was a, 28-4, Tiger lead with 6:48 left in only the second quarter. The rest of the game was played but at no time was there any doubt at the Ipswich Tiger Den about the final outcome.

Keys to the Ipswich success during that special 5 ½ minutes were that they; had no turnovers, made three 3’s, and forced six Royal turnovers.

The Tigers put together another stretch of unanswered points (nine) in the second quarter. Their halftime lead was, 42-9.

This was not a run-up-the-score kind of game. Every player on both rosters played plenty. Substituting five at a time was the norm in the second half.

My scoresheet had freshman Jenna Gagnon with 17 points and sophomore Caroline Soucy with 16 points to lead Ipswich. Jenna had four 3’s. Julia Davis (10), Jordan Morrissey (9), and Masey Zegarowski (8) also contributed points for Ipswich.

Marissa Agganis (7 points) paced the Royals getting two 3’s in the second quarter. Kristin Hogan only played in the first half and was limited to two points by defender Brigid O’Flynn.

Next for Ipswich will be Manchester-Essex at home on December 27th. The Royals next opponent is Winthrop at home on December 28th.

Ipswich was 18-5 last year and have made the post-season tournament eight straight years. Anyone attending the game I’m written about would feel quite certain that another Tiger tournament team is in the making.

Two of the teams that have had the Tigers’ number over the last few seasons are Masconomet and Pentucket. This season Pentucket has already defeated Masco.

The Tigers will host Masco on January 3rd. A win there by Ipswich will make the circle-the-date (January 15th) encounter with Pentucket at Pentucket a huge one in the Cape Ann League.

Former Tiger Shannon McFayden was in the house.

You knew that the outcome was decided early when both coaches sat during the entire second half.

Unofficially, Georgetown made only two of nineteen free throws.

Most impressive player? Caroline Soucy. The sophomore caused Georgetown trouble on both ends of the court.

Biggest surprise? Jenna Gagnon. The lefty put in four long ones and certainly wasn’t freshman shy about shooting. Adding an outside shooting threat to the Ipswich lineup will open things up for the numerous Tiger drivers.

There was a Pentucket scout in the house.

Big inning gets Georgetown by Amesbury 9-3 in Cape Ann League baseball

(Georgetown) Georgetown (7-10) combined four hits and four walks with three Amesbury (3-14) miscues in the third inning to get seven runs and defeat the Indians, 9-3, on a very pleasant Saturday afternoon for Cape Ann League baseball.

The game was originally scheduled for 10AM but with the Georgetown junior/senior prom the night before, the game was rescheduled for 2PM.

Junior Jeff Moore dominated Amesbury over six shutout innings allowing just two hits (Shawn Bannon & Ben Cullen). Jeff also had six strikeouts and limited the Indians to just four base runners.

The game didn’t get out of hand until the bottom of the third. The Royals only had a 1-0 lead at that time.

The bottom of the third, however, was a seven-run disaster for Amesbury. AHS starter Nick Hawrylciw walked the bases loaded with one out. Indian coach Gene Burnham lifted Nick for shortstop Ben Cullen. Nick took Ben’s place at short.

That switch didn’t work out so well for either player. Ben had a wild pitch, gave up two walks and two hits while Nick had two errors at short.

As luck would have it, after seven runs had crossed for Georgetown, Coach Burnham switched Ben and Nick back to their original positions and sure enough Nick’s first pitch produced a grounder to Ben that he handled cleanly to end the inning.

GHS coach Justin Spurr used mostly reserves after the fifth inning and they were able to get a run off of Devlin Gobiel in the sixth. Nick Correnti’s high hopper drove in Kevin Terban with G’town’s ninth run.

Coach Spurr let Mark Berkland pitch the seventh inning and he gave up five straight singles before getting an out. Noah Kligerman, Adam Ivanic, and Devlin Gobiel drove in the three Amesbury runs in that final inning as the Indians batted around.

Amesbury has now lost ten of their last eleven games. Their next game is home on Tuesday against Newburyport.

Georgetown travels to North Shore Tech on Monday.

Every park is a little different. At Georgetown they provide a program and they also announce the names of the players batting and any substitutions made.

The Georgetown right fielder disappeared into the lush vegetation in foul territory and came out with the ball.

In the section I was sitting in there was news that Tyler Wade had been voted King of the Prom.

All nine starters for Georgetown reached base in some fashion.

Both Colby Ingraham and Ryan Browner were picked off first base.

CJ Ingraham had a 2-run single in the decisive third inning.

Strong finish gets Georgetown girls past Whittier (70-65) in the D4 North First Round

(Haverhill) Plenty of excitement in this one.

After nine lead changes it was Georgetown breaking away in the last 2 ½ minutes to defeat Whittier, 70-65, in the first round of the D4 North tournament on Tuesday night at Whittier.

Neither team was shy about firing the long ones – there were eighteen 3’s made during the game – but the Royals won this one late from inside the arc.

A jumper from Ali Newbury (her first shot) put G’Town ahead 65-63. After a Whittier turnover, Kristin Hogan hit a driving layup from the left. Christina Medley answered with two free throws with 33 seconds left to cut the Royal lead to 67-65.

Ten seconds later Marisa Agganis hit one of two free throws to extend Georgetown’s lead to 68-65 with twenty-three seconds to go. Whittier was still within one-possession range but Christina Medley missed a long three. After a Wildcat rebound and timeout Kendra Brasil was called for a double dribble. Kristin Hogan then put the game out of reach with two free throws.

Christina Medley (27 points) and Kristin Hogan (23 points) took every open shot that came their way and made plenty of them. Christina has scored over 1000 points for Whittier. In this one she hit five long ones and put up eighteen points in the back-and-forth second half. Kristin connected on four 3’s and tallied fourteen in the second half. In one sequence in the 4th quarter Kristin made a jump shot and almost immediately stole the inbounds pass and put in a layup. It was about the fastest four points you’ll ever see.

After an even first quarter (15-15) the Wildcats built up a ten-point lead (30-20) with Christina contributing a layup, a converted rebound and two free throws. Whittier was ahead, 32-24, at the half.

Whittier was still in good shape (38-31) after two minutes of the third quarter before Marisa Agganis and the Royal defense kicked in. Marisa hit a three and then three straight Wildcat turnovers led to Royal scores, two by Marisa and one by Kylie Troy. Suddenly, G’town had the lead (40-38) halfway through the third period.

Christina Medley had answers. She hit a jump shot, nailed a three (from Kendra Brasil) and set Kendra up for a long one. That was an eight-point run to now give Whittier the advantage, 46-40.

Georgetown capitalized on another Whittier turnover (they had twenty-two) very late in the 3rd quarter that gave Marisa a layup with two seconds left. Whittier led, 50-46, at the end of the quarter.

Kristin’s quick four points put Georgetown in front, 56-55, with 5 ½ to play. A Morgan Gott triple boosted the advantage to 62-58 with four to play. But back came Whittier on a three by Christina and two free throws from Catherine Roache to tie the game 63-63 with 2 ½ minutes left. The Royals made the big plays thereafter and came away with the tournament win.

Marisa Agganis was a Cape Ann League All-Star this season. She showed why in the second half of this game with fifteen points and numerous steals. She also took a pretty hard foul late in the game.

Kristin Hogan injured fingers on her shooting hand early in the third quarter. She was out of the game for a while. The rest may have helped her as she scored Georgetown’s first ten points in the final quarter in the first 2 ½ minutes.

Christina Medley made plenty of 3’s in pregame and continued the accuracy in the game itself.

Whittier staged a pregame light show. I thought I was at the TD North Garden…..well, not quite.

Georgetown plays #3 seed Fenway on Friday night at Burke High School in the D3 North quarter-finals.
