Triton stuns Masco 46-45 on late 3’s by Paul Dacy

Paul Dacy of Triton shoots the game-winner over Brian Reardon in front of the Viking student section.

Paul Dacy of Triton shoots the game-winner over Brian Reardon in front of the Viking student section.

(Byfield)  What a game!

Senior Paul Dacy hit two 3’s in the final thirty-five seconds enabling Triton (4-2) to edge Masconomet, 46-45, before an excited home crowd on Friday night.

Celebration on the court began even before the final three had been posted on the scoreboard

Celebration on the court began even before the final three had been posted on the scoreboard

That crowd rushed the floor when Paul’s final shot went in and the buzzer sounded.

The Chieftains (1-6) led by seven (41-34) with four minutes left but four turnovers the rest of the way had plenty to do with the bad ending for them.  Two of the turnovers led directly to Viking layups by Zak Alaoui (20 points) and Sam McKenzie (4 points).

Another Masco miscue gave Triton the ball with one minute left.  Trailing by three (43-40), the Vikings passed and passed and, with few seconds on the shot clock, Paul Dacy was forced into a fall-away three.  The shot caromed off the backboard and in tying the score with thirty-five seconds left.

Jalen Aho put Masco ahead late in the game

Jalen Aho put Masco ahead late in the game

No timeout by Masco.  Point guard Jalen Aho controlled the ball throughout the Masco possession.  He dribbled one way and then the other looking to be intent on passing to anyone.  However, when the lane opened up the junior sailed in for a layup with 10.9 seconds left.

Triton took a timeout.  Coach Dave Clay said afterwards that the plan was to get to the basket.  Trailing by two it made sense.  But the Masco defense was tough.  Zak Alaoui attempted to drive from the left but the Chieftain defense collapsed to prevent it.  However, by preventing Zak from penetrating they gave him a chance to get the ball to Paul Dacy in the nearby corner.  Paul had a split second to let the shot fly from in front of the Triton student section. He also had defender Brian Reardon running at him but it didn’t matter as he canned the game-winner.

Why all the excitement at Triton?  The Vikings are coming off a 5-15 season and already have four wins in 2012-13.  An energetic student section is in place. They stood throughout the game offering plenty of encouragement before swarming the court after the final buzzer.

I chose to cover this game for two reasons: (1) to take a look at the suddenly successful Triton Vikings and see how they’re doing it, and (2) try to figure out what has gone wrong with a Masconomet team that was 14-7 in 2011-12.

Zak Alaoui (20 points)

Zak Alaoui (20 points)

The answer to the first is that this season’s Vikings play tight defense and are eager to run with turnovers.  They also can make shots from long range.

The answer to the second was not as clear with just one look.  I never saw Captain Chris Schleer.  He certainly would have made a difference.  It was obvious that Masco made far too many mistakes.  I had them for twenty-four turnovers including eight in the final quarter.

After Paul Dacy (11 points), the two standouts in this game were Triton’s Zak Alaoui and Masco’s Zach Turcotte.  Both players had twenty points.  Zak had a couple of three’s but most of his scoring came from breakaway layups set up by good defense.  6-6 Zach dominated the inside doing all of his scoring from in close.

Triton had a four-point lead (13-9) early in the second quarter but later on Masco got ahead on two inside scores by Tighe Van Lenten (7 points) and Ben Hinckley.  A three from the right corner by Zak Alaoui set up the halftime score at 18-18.

Masco led for most of the third quarter before three’s by Connor Barry (9 points) and Zak (off the rim and backboard) knotted things at 30-30.

Zach Turcotte (20 points)

Zach Turcotte (20 points)

Over the next 5+ minutes of playing time, stretching into the fourth quarter, the Chieftains put an 11-4 run together.  Two of the scores were on converted rebounds (Alberto Arenaza and Zach Turcotte).  Brian Reardon drained a three as the visitors looked to be pulling away.

But over the final four minutes, despite being down 41-34, the Vikings rallied and won a thriller at the buzzer.

Triton, now 3-1 in the Cape Ann League, visits North Reading on Monday night.  On the same night, Masco, now 0-4 in the CAL, will host Newburyport.  Coach L’Italien was on hand for the Triton/Masco game.

Tyler Leavitt silences Triton 7-1 with a 12K, 5-hitter for North Andover in Cape Ann League baseball

Tyler Leavitt gets congratulated by catcher Brandon Walsh after striking out his 12th Viking to end the game.

Tyler Leavitt – undefeated (13-0) in his varsity career

(Byfield) It looked after four innings as if Triton might be able to do something no one else had been able to do in three seasons……defeat North Andover pitcher Tyler Leavitt.

However, the upset notion went down the drain in the fifth inning as the Knights (8-3) put up five runs and went on to defeat the Vikings, 7-1, on a surprisingly pleasant Sunday afternoon at Triton in Cape Ann League action.

Triton (3-7) scored a run in the first and threatened in the second but were limited to three base runners over the final five frames.

Tyler Leavitt escaped the jam (runners on second and third with one out) in the second with a strikeout and an infield grounder.

Tyler (12 K’s) had strikeouts in every inning including the last five batters he faced.  The senior lefty will be pitching for Southern Maine next season.

I learned at the game that Tyler was 6-0 as a freshman on the junior varsity, 4-0 as a sophomore, 6-0 as a junior, and now 3-0 as a senior.

Triton starter Nick Cornoni got out of a base-loaded situation in the second and held a tenuous 1-0 lead into the fifth.

Costly Rich Fecteau bobble in the fifth

In the fifth, Dan Rivet singled in NA’s first run and an infield error (Rich Fecteau) allowed Mike Borzi to cross with the second one.  Brandon Walsh delivered two more (Dan Rivet and Rick O’Connor) with a double down the leftfield line.  Brandon crossed with the Knight’s fifth run of the inning on Dan Laorenza’s single to right.

Those five were more than enough the way Tyler Leavitt was pitching.

The Knights collected solo runs in the sixth and seventh.  Tyler Whitley homered over the leftfield fence off reliever Jack Germinara in the 6th.  Brandon Walsh doubled in the 7th, stole third, and came home on Tyler Leavitt’s sacrifice fly.

The Triton run was scored by Rich Fecteau on a sacrifice fly by Mike Fish in the first inning.

Tyler Whitley in home run trot after clearing the left field fence in the sixth.

Brandon Walsh and Dan Rivet each had two hits in NA’s 10-hit attack.

Dmitri Hunt had two of Triton’s five hits.

The Knights Dan Laorenza appeared to injure his hand sliding into second in the fifth inning on an attempted steal.

I was prepared for “typical” Triton weather and was pleasantly surprised.

Triton is halfway through the 4-games-in-4-days part of their schedule.  They face Masco at home on Monday.

Undefeated Rockport breezes by Triton, 9-0, in Cape Ann League softball

Hannah Lorden scores on a Triton passed ball

Kristen Turner pitched a four-hit shutout

(Byfield)  Memo to the rest of the Cape Ann League softball teams: Rockport is good….very good.

Undefeated Rockport (8-0) shut out Triton, 9-0, on a windy Friday afternoon in Cape Ann League action at Triton.

(Since both teams are the Vikings, I’ll limit my use of the name.)

Senior Kristen Turner allowed Triton (2-6) only four singles and walked no one earning the win.

Triton’s lone threat was in the sixth. They loaded the bases on two singles (Mara Spears & Cori Simons) and an error (Kendra Adams) with no outs.  However, a force at home, a popup, and an infield grounder ended the one and only potentially big inning for Triton.

Triton’s starter (Cori Simons) didn’t fare as well when Rockport loaded the bases against her in the first inning with no outs.  Passed balls brought in two runs (Hannah Lorden & Mollie Watson) and a fielder’s choice RBI by Kendra Adams scored Gabby Muniz with Rockport’s third tally.

Mara Spears reaches third

That was more than enough runs for Rockport as Kristen locked down Triton with only two singles through the first five innings.

Rockport had runners on in every inning and it was a credit to pitcher Cori Simons and her teammates that they recovered from the first inning (three runs) and held Rockport scoreless over the next three innings.

Rockport collected their fourth run in the fifth inning.  Kendra Adams reached on an error (Kylie Gilroy), went to third on a Kayla Parisi single, and scored on a passed ball.

A walk (Hannah Lorden), an RBI double (Mollie Watson), and an RBI triple (Gabby Muniz) and Rockport had two more runs in the sixth.  A passed ball allowed Gabby to score Rockport’s seventh run.

Two more runs were added in the seventh.  After two outs, Hannah Lorden walked, went to second on a passed ball, and scored on Lily Anderson’s (first baseman) drop.  Gabby Muniz (single) drove in Mollie Watson with the final run.

Hannah Lorden – three runs, two hits, three walks

The top three in the Rockport batting order were extremely productive.  Leadoff hitter Hannah Lorden was 2-for-2 plus three walks and three runs scored.  Mollie Watson was 2-for-5 including a double, scored three runs, and had an RBI.  Gabby Muniz was 2-for-4 including a triple, scored two runs, and had two RBI.  These three girls are all sophomores!  Last year Gabby was Player-of-the-Year in CAL D3 while Mollie was a CAL All-Star.

Kayla Parisi had two hits for Rockport and Cori Simons had two for Triton.

Rockport went 9-11 last season and lost in the first round of the state tournament.  I can’t guess how they’ll do in the 2012 state tournament but I am quite certain, from what I saw today, that they will be a high seed in the tourney.

Triton pitching (Cori Simons & Mara Spears) gave up six walks and nine hits.  The mix of base runners and passed balls was not a good one for Triton.

Rockport’s next game is home against Masco on Monday afternoon.  Masco lost its first game today versus Lynnfield.

Third baseman Casey Ross fields a grounder.

Triton travels to Georgetown on Monday.

It is easy to pick the Triton fans from others.  On a sunny afternoon with temperatures in the 50s elsewhere, they show up wearing what could pass as winter gear – warm hats, gloves, etc..  And as they know from experience, by the time the game ended that gear made perfect sense.

Kristen Turner has pitched four years for Rockport.  Coach Diane Parisi told me that her freshman daughter (Kayla) can pitch.

Triton coach Jim Hounam sent up three pinch hitters in the bottom of the seventh and Kristen struck out all of them.  She had six K’s for the game.

According to the Gloucester Times, Rockport’s 7-0 start was the best ever for the softball program.  That was topped today with an 8-0 start.

Triton plays well in softball win (6-3) over Newburyport

Amy Sullivan tries for third as Kelsey Trudel prepares to throw her out.

Cori Simons struck out four and had two hits.

(Newburyport) Triton combined flawless fielding with a Cori Simons six-hitter and started the Cape Ann League regular season with a 6-3 win over Newburyport on Wednesday afternoon at Cashman Park.

The senior-less Vikings (2-5) tallied three runs in the first and never trailed.  The Clippers (3-4) got within a run in the fourth but a collection of loud outs with runners in scoring position, and base running gaffes, kept them from getting closer.

Newburyport ended three innings with loud outs to the outfield with runners aboard.  They also ran into a double play in the seventh on a rope to shortstop Shannon Sinton.

Triton had nine hits off of Molly Rowe including four in the first and another three in the fifth.  Bunching those hits produced five Viking runs.

In the Triton first, Shannon Sinton and Jeanne Martin had singles off second baseman Amy Sullivan’s glove.  An inch or two either way and they would have been outs but on this day Shannon eventually scored (passed ball) and Jeanne drove in Kelsey Trudel with the third Viking run.

Lea Tomasz slides under the tag of Rose Gaffins.

Newburyport got two back in their half of the fourth.  Lea Tomasz delivered Carley Siemasko with a long double to left.  Lea took third on the throw to the plate and came home on a passed ball.

Triton came right back with two in the fifth.  A perfectly executed sacrifice bunt by Shannon Sinton put Mara Spears in scoring position.  Cori Simons’ single to right brought Mara in with Run #4.  Cori then stole second, reached 3rd on a fielder’s choice and came in on a controversial (was it fair?) flair near the right field line.

Several bad throws gave the Vikings a gift run in the 7th with pinch runner Ashley Shute scoring on Lily Anderson’s single to deep short.

Down by four in their last at-bats, the Clippers had the makings of a big rally after a double (Molly Rowe) and a single (Beth Castantini) turned up a run with no outs.  But Sam Wahlgren’s line drive was right at shortstop Shannon Sinton and she turned it into a double play.  Cori Simons finished the game recording her fourth strikeout.

Aggressive base running was good news/bad news for Amy Sullivan.  The sophomore second baseman stole second in the six inning but got caught easily trying to take third on the overthrow.

Newburyport has played six of its first seven games at home.  They will play at Manchester-Essex on Friday.

Triton will face Rockport at home on Friday.

Had the weather trifecta at Cashman – cloudy, rainy, and sunny.

Kendra Dow makes a running catch as teammate Sam Wahlgren looks for a deflection.

Amy Sullivan and Kendra Dow had nice catches on popups.

Cori Simons, Lily Anderson, and Kelsey Trudel each had two hits for Triton.  Beth Castantini had two for Newburyport.

On the controversial (Is it fair?) fly to right in the Triton sixth inning, the home plate umpire had to make the call.  The problem was that he was looking over/around several players to do it.  Where was the other ump?  Because there were runners on base, he wasn’t on the first base line.

Late Surge Sends Lynnfield to 66-53 Victory Over Triton in Boys Basketball

Steve Carangelo (17 points) hits a 4th quarter three for Lynnfield

Pat Kearney (17 points) drills a three as Pioneer coach Scott MacKenzie watches

(Byfield)  The Lynnfield Pioneers blew open a close game in the fourth quarter and defeated Triton, 66-53, on Wednesday night at Triton in Cape Ann League play.

Lynnfield (5-4 overall / 3-0 in the CAL) had a tenuous, 50-48, lead with six minutes left but put a 15-2 hit on the Vikings over the next five minutes to win going away.

The primary villain in Lynnfield’s spurt was junior Steve Carangelo (17 points).  The CAL All-Star of 2010-11 registered eight unanswered points with two long ones and a layup to boost the Pioneers to a 10-point spread with 4 ½ minutes left.

There was more Lynnfield damage ahead as Kevin Gamble (13 points) scored twice in close and added a free throw while Pat Kearney (17 points) hit a jumper.  The only offense Triton had to show during all this was two Jedd Hutchins free throws.

Triton (3-5 overall / 2-1 in the CAL) had 5-point leads several times in the first quarter thanks to an old-fashioned 3-point play by Derek Paquette and later a jumper by Jedd Hutchins behind a nice double screen.

Blaise Whitman breaks away

The Vikings looked to be in serious trouble in the 3rd quarter when they trailed, 37-30, but they responded with an 11-4 run to tie the score at 41-41 with a minute left in that quarter.  A three by Jedd Hutchins (7 points) and two layups by hustling Rich Fecteau (8 points) keyed this rally.

The Pioneers pulled off some late-quarter magic in the first and third. Steve Carangelo had a steal and layup just beating the buzzer to end the first quarter.  At the end of the third quarter Triton tried to take the last shot but instead shot too early (and missed) giving lefty Pat Kearney time to can a long three from in front of the Pioneer bench at the buzzer.

Triton coach Dave Clay wasn’t shy about using his bench and ended up with ten players scoring.

Kevin Gamble (13 points) lay in

There was no fog in the Triton gym to cloud my mind but I failed to realize until later that the Kevin Gamble playing for Lynnfield and the interested parent in the crowd were connected.  Yes, it was the former Celtic Kevin Gamble.

Lynnfield made six 3’s including five in the second half.

Triton is at Rockport on Friday.

Ipswich Scores Twenty Straight in 62-40 Win Over Triton in Girls Basketball

Effie Markopoulos breaks away from the pack.

Freshman Masey Zegarowski paced Ipswich with eighteen points.

(Byfield) No surprises here even with a full moon.

Ipswich overwhelmed very inexperienced Triton, 62-40, on Monday night at Triton in Cape Ann League action.

Triton, now 2-6 overall and 0-2 in the Cape Ann League, has lost five straight.  Four of those losses have been by twenty points or more.  Beyond Jessica Canning (18 points) and Lauren Batter ton (9 points), this team is new to the varsity level of girls basketball.

Ipswich, 7-1 overall and 1-1 in the CAL, was a nightmare opponent for Triton having plenty of experienced players and motivation after a tough loss last game to Newburyport.

The Tigers crafted a seven-point run late in the first quarter into the start of the second quarter, and pulled away, 18-9.  Free throws by Brigid O’Flynn and Masey Zegarowski (18 points) started the streak.  A Julia Davis (12 points) layup (pass from Nyra Constant) and a Masey steal and layup finished it.

The Vikings found enough offense (several Jessica Canning baskets) to stay competitive (20-15) until 4:15 of the second quarter.

The rest of the half Ipswich played like the team that came in 6-1 and mixes an inside and outside offense as well as effective pressure defense.  It all clicked for the Tigers for the rest of the half and they put up twenty unanswered points to run away, 40-15, at halftime.

Jessica Canning (18 points) in Ipswich traffic

During this strong run, Ipswich made 3’s (Masey Zegarowski & Nyra Constant), got Julia Davis going inside (2 baskets), and turned turnovers into layups down the other end.  Impressive all-around display.

The second half was perfect for Ipswich coach Mandy Zegarowski because, with a big game ahead on Wednesday at home with Masconomet, she could rest the players who will be getting the long minutes versus the Chieftains.

It also worked well for Triton coach Karen Christian because her team could have some positive moments in the second half.  One impressive Viking was Jessica Canning.  She has a good outside shot.

2010-11 CAL All-Star Shannon McFayden took the opening tip in for an easy layup and never scored again in limited minutes.  Her offense will be needed against Masco.

Triton travels to Lynnfield on Wednesday.

Jake Stelline Key in Triton’s 2-0 Win Over Ipswich in Boys Soccer

Greg Gallagher (13) and Demitri Tzitzon (12) congratulate Jake Stelline (10) for his goal while Ipswich goalie Erik Fyrer looks away.

Demitri Tzitzon nails second half penalty kick.

(Byfield) The Triton boys soccer team, led by Jake Stelline, defeated Ipswich, 2-0, Tuesday afternoon at sunny/windy Triton.

Now both teams have four wins. And in a season in which wins are scarce, Triton (4-11-1) has to be pleased to now have won three of their last five matches. On the other hand, Ipswich is on a losing streak that has reached six.

Ipswich (4-11) gave up both goals in the second half.  Viking senior Jake Stelline was a factor in both scores.  He set up the first goal by drawing a pull-down penalty (on Kyle Cantrell) that led to Demitri Tzitzon’s successful penalty kick.  Later in the half, Jake beat Tiger goalie Erik Fyrer to a 50/50 ball and put a quick shot past him.

I’ve been to a few outdoor events at Triton and the way the soccer field is set up makes one end a lot less appealing to defend than the other. If the wind doesn’t get you, then the sun will.  And also the later in the day it is, the worse those two can be.  The Ipswich captains won the toss and surprised everyone, including their coach, by choosing to put their goalie (Erik Fyrer) in the position of facing the sun/wind in the second half.  Unfortunately (for Ipswich), the crosswinds of the first half changed in the second half to blow strong and straight at their goal.

Triton goalie Dalton Tzitzon stunned by hard Ryan Law shot late in the game.

The elements aside, this was an even match with both teams getting numerous scoring opportunities.  Even against the wind Ipswich had several in-close direct kicks in the second half that missed the net entirely or were kicked right at Viking goalie Dalton Tzitzon.  The Tigers best shot of the day was in the last minute when Ryan Law’s blast actually spun Dalton around as he caught it.  But on this day he made all the stops getting his third shutout of the season.

I was down the far end for both goals.  That actually gave me a better look at Demitre’s penalty kick (5:30 of the second half).  My picture shows Tiger goalie Erik Fyrer flinch right as Demitre hit’s the shot to Erik’s left.

The next twenty-five minutes Ipswich had six shots by my count but had trouble getting a clean look as Triton defenders, particularly John Mills, cleared threatening balls away.

The second goal (31:30 of the second half) was harder to see than the first from long distance.  The ball appeared to be a high bouncer that the Ipswich defense was slow getting to.  Jake Stelline took full advantage as Erik came out belatedly to try and get control.  The next thing I knew the ball was in the Tiger net.

Erik Fyrer (bright orange) leaps to catch a second half Triton shot.

Erik Fyrer was run into by Mark Schwarz legally in the first half and was down on the ground for a while.  Dalton Tzitzon made a nice leaping save in traffic late in the game.

One player was given a card for wearing jewelry.

A cross country meet between Pentucket and Triton was run during the soccer game.  The result was that cross country spectators were standing along the goal line of the soccer game with their backs to the soccer game while it was going on.  I couldn’t help but think that this had the makings of an accident waiting to happen.

The foliage in the distance at Triton outdoor events this time of year is truly remarkable.  The Creator has an eye for beauty!

Triton’s last game will be hosting Pentucket at 3:45PM on October 27th (Thursday).  Ipswich will be at Hamilton-Wenham same day, same time.

Georgetown Girls Soccer Team Tested by Triton 3-2

Ten Georgetown Royals are in the goal area trying to hold off Triton in the last minute of the game.

Kristin Hogan (20) defended by Ashley Ross (10) had a goal and an assist for the Royals.

(Byfield) The Triton girls soccer team lost, 3-2, to Georgetown on a nice Monday afternoon at the Central Street Athletic Field in Cape Ann League play.

This game was as close as the final score indicates and the talented Royals were fortunate that this one didn’t end in a tie or even worse.

And who could see such a competitive game coming?  Triton loses to Masconomet, 7-1, while Georgetown ties them.  Triton loses to Lynnfield, 7-0, while Georgetown beats the Pioneers, 4-1.  The Vikings had won only one game (Rockport 3-1) all season and had been outscored, 25-4, since then.  Do you get the picture??

Things were going just about as figured through thirty-nine of the first forty minutes.  The Royals had two goals and looked to be in command.  But a last-minute long shot from the right by Viking Mackenzie Snow sailed over G’town goalie Jamie Block’s head to give the Vikings a goal….and hope.

Mackenzie Snow (8) returns to midfield after a goal in the first half. She had two for the game.

I couldn’t help but overhear Georgetown coach Colleen Gibbs getting all over her team during halftime.  She wasn’t pleased with the concentration or effort.  I’m sure that the last minute goal was part of the frustration.

Second half Georgetown dominated early on.  Their passing was noteworthy in the midfield area.

Kristin Hogan registered a goal for the Royals five minutes into the second half with a left-footed shot after a run along the left sidelines nearly to the corner.  The shot went over Viking goalie Elizabeth Benoit’s head.

Down 3-1, you set yourself for more Royal goals but they never came.  There was pressure in the Triton end but the Royals didn’t have their finishing shoes on over the last thirty-five minutes.

Triton got the goal back at 23:10 after Mackenzie Snow advanced the ball down the right sideline and later put the finishing touch on from in close to make it 3-2.

Kristin Hogan had several good looks for Georgetown right after the Snow goal but the Triton defense held.

Over the last ten minutes the Vikings really put the pressure on Georgetown.  You started to wonder when they would tie the score not if.  I counted at least five Triton shots that all had a chance.  The picture at the top shows how frantic things got in the last minute.  I see nine Georgetown players in close to goalie Jamie Block with six Vikings in the area.  I also see the ball just going wide right as a Viking dives after it.

Nicole Holland (17) credited with two goals. Rachel Williamson (21) defends.

Close, very close, but at game’s end the Royals (7-2-4) had earned 2 points and qualified for the tournament while Triton (1-10-3) had yet another loss.

The Royals did not play badly.  There were lengthy segments in both halves where they put on a clinic of ball control with pass after pass.

Nicole Holland scored the first goal – left foot, left side – after a pass from Kristin Hogan at 14:25.

Nicole was credited with the second goal at 36:40.  The way I saw it, an Ashley Mueskes corner kick went over goalie Elizabeth Benoit’s head and deflected in off of teammate Ashley Ross.  Nicole was closest to where the ball was when it was inadvertently deflected in.

I thought the game was at Triton High School.  Wrong.  The boys soccer team was playing North Reading there.

The Central Street Athletic Fields have two soccer fields so both the varsity and JV games went on together.

Triton goalie Elizabeth Benoit was run into at least four times yet held on.

Kelly Chickering

Kelly Chickering was terrific…..as usual.  Her speed and ability to control the ball are eye-catching.  I try to imagine what she might be like in the attack zone.

A big advantage for Georgetown was the lengthy goal kicks by Jamie Block.  The distance is impressive as well as the height.

No one was on hand to chase balls going out of bounds.  The clock ran as players chased errant shots and passes.

Triton next game is tomorrow (Tuesday October 25th) at Ipswich at 6:30PM.

Georgetown gets Amesbury at Georgetown tomorrow (Tuesday October 25th) at 3:45PM.

Triton Boys Tie Newburyport 2-2 In Cape Ann League Soccer

Triton threatens late in the first half.

Sophomore Adam Traxler scored Newburyport’s first goal and had several other scoring chances.

(Byfield)  They’ve done this before – played to a tie.

The Triton Vikings and Newburyport Clippers played to a 2-2 tie in boys soccer on warm Monday afternoon at Triton in Cape Ann League action.

The teams played twice last year and finished one game scoreless and the other one, 3-3.

This was a rescheduled, weather-impaired game from last week.  It was the actual opener for Triton (0-0-1) and the second for Newburyport (0-0-2).  The Clippers began the season with a 2-2 tie with Methuen.

The conditions were great for spectators but not so for participants – too hot.  The conditioning of both teams appeared suspect and there was plenty of needed substituting on both sides.

The Clippers dominated play early.  They had already played a game and performed like that.  Triton was cautious, more interested in preventing a goal than scoring one.

The officials had the Triton goalie (Dalton Tzitzon – sophomore) change his shirt because he could have been mistaken for a Newburyport player.

Jake Stelline (#10) scored the tying goal for Triton late in the first half.

Newburyport had its chances without results for twenty minutes.  Senior AJ MacDougall hit a shot wide and came close with a header.  Junior Jordy Steelman had the ball close to the Triton goal.  A short while later AJ MacDougall contacted the Triton goalie’s best friend (crossbar).

Persistent sophomore Adam Traxler finally cashed in for the Clippers twenty minutes in.  He broke in alone and finished high to give Newburyport a 1-0 lead.

The Clippers kept after Triton.  Adam came close to a second goal and senior Matt Eagan had a good opening.  Neither cashed in.

Triton finally brought some serious pressure very late in the half, led by senior Jake Stelline.  The Viking senior hit the post on a break in and came back again with a shot off goalie junior Matt Canning’s hands into the upper corner to tie the score.

The halftime rest revitalized the Clippers.  Immediately they were into Viking territory and putting on pressure.  In the first minute there was a sequence with shots and rebounds before senior Harrison Corbett scored.  Newburyport led 2-1.

Jake Papanicolaou, shown here dribbling right, later would dribble left into the same area and beat Clipper goalie Matt Canning to the short side to tie the score in the second half.

As in the first half, Newburyport pressed again for more.  Again the dangerous chances came from Adam Traxler.

Triton was a lot earlier to start answering back than in the first half.  Both senior Mark Schwarz and Jake Papanicolaou had threatening shots during the middle twenty minutes of the forty minute half.

It was sophomore Jake Papanicolaou who produced the game-tier with eight minutes left.  The skilled dribbler took control of the ball on the left and maneuvered into the middle before unleashing a left-footed kick that beat Matt Canning on the short side.  That made it 2-2.

I didn’t see any particularly dangerous shots thereafter.  Both teams were clearly gassed.

Newburyport plays at Pentucket on Thursday while Triton gets to visit Amesbury on the same day.

Opportuntistic Marblehead Gets Past Triton in Softball Tourney Opener 7-1

Emmy York brings in the final out as Alexa Gross waits to congratulate her.

Kathryn Digiammarino – two runs, two RBI, two triples

(Byfield) Opportunistic Marblehead bested Triton, 7-1, in the preliminary round of the MIAA softball tournament on Thursday afternoon and will now face top-seed Amesbury (18-2) on Saturday afternoon (4PM) at Amesbury in a First Round match.

The conditions at Triton?  It was the familiar (cold and cloudy) and the unfamiliar (gusty winds).  Early spring weather continues!

Marblehead (13-10) had only five hits off of Triton starter Marion Dullea but three of those hits were for extra bases.  The Magicians stranded only two runners.

Triton (11-10) was all over the base paths with nine hits but stranded ten runners including at least one runner in six of the seven innings.

Marblehead leadoff batter Kathryn Digiammarino blasted two triples, scored two runs, and drove in two runs.  The Northeast Conference All-Star shortstop was solid in the field as well.

Cori Simons reaches third and Jenn Delaney second but the Vikings couldn’t score in the first inning.

The Vikings had a major squander in the first inning.  They loaded the bases on two hits (Cori Simons & Jenn Delaney), and an error (3B Lucia Chalek), with only one out.  However, Marion Dullea’s fly ball to left field turned into a double play when LF Olivia Vener’s strong throw home easily nabbed Cori Simons.  Catcher Carly Score had the ball waiting by the time Cori arrived.

The Magicians didn’t get a hit until the top of the third inning but it was a big one.  Alexa Gross and Rachel McKay had just reached on Marion Dullea’s only two walks of the game before Marblehead’s first hit (Kathryn Digiammarino’s long triple to right center) brought in both of them.  The next hitter (Olivia Vener) bunted and Kathryn was caught in a rundown between third and home.  Triton executed the rundown poorly and Kathryn scored Marblehead’s third run.  Olivia reached second during the rundown and scored on Lucia Chalek’s double to center.

The Magicians added to that 4-0 lead with another run in the fifth.  Rachel McKay singled, was sacrificed to second (Olivia Vener), and came home when right fielder Cori Simons dropped Lucia Chalek’s fly to right.

Julia Lothrop beats the throw home in the sixth inning to score Marblehead’s sixth run.

Another unearned run came in the sixth.  Sarah Hastings reached on Brook Jamison’s error (grounder went through her legs).  Julia Lothrop ran for Sarah.  Julia stole second and was sacrificed to third by Emmy York.  Carly Score’s sacrifice fly to center brought Julia home with Marblehead’s 6th run.

Kathryn tripled to center in the seventh and came home when the Triton infield bobbled the relay throw from the outfield.

Triton’s lone run came in the bottom of the seventh.  Cori Simons singled and later went to third on a 2-base throwing error by catcher Carly Score.  Cori scored on a Jenn Delaney grounder to pitcher Michaela LeBlanc as the pitcher’s throw home was late.

Cori Simons had three hits for Triton.

Rachel McKay scored two runs for Marblehead.

Michaela LeBlanc – Magician freshman was complete game winner.

Freshman pitcher Michaela LeBlanc gave up nine hits but no walks.  Triton starter Marion Dullea walked two and both scored in the third inning.

Marblehead coach Jon Gold didn’t have to use his usual starting pitcher (Sarah Hastings) in this one.  Look for her to start at Amesbury on Saturday.

The Magicians are seeded #17 in Division 2 North.  They have made the tournament five of the last six seasons.

Getting confused at a high school softball game is easy with no scoreboards or rosters.  Trying to keep track of players is an adventure even if you have the rosters and know the score. The Marblehead 6th is the classic example.  Sarah Hastings reached on an error and so Coach Jonny Gold put in a pinch runner.  The runner’s number was #12.  I had a copy of Coach Gold’s lineup for the game and #12 (on his card) was Julia Lothrop.  Julia would end up stealing a base and scoring a run.  However, a program was given out at the game by Triton AD Donna Andersen.  I checked it afterwards and see that #12 on it is Kathleen Reilly.  Julia Lathrop (different spelling) is listed as #8.  And some folks wonder why reports of softball games aren’t accurate???

(I collect my own stats and take my own pictures.  Mistakes can happen and I take ownership for my part.)

Julia Lothrop steals second as Brooke Jamison takes throw.
