Tim McCarthy (21 points) leads Wilmington past Newburyport 66-58

Tim McCarthy (#20) is defended by Chris Jayne (#5). Tim finished as the game’s top scorer with 21 points.

(Newburyport) Consistent Wilmington (6-1) outlasted scrappy Newburyport (4-4), 66-58, in Cape Ann League action at Newburyport on Friday night.

The Wildcats took the lead (18-16) for good late in the first quarter on a Nick Godzyk (13 points) layup.

This was a game of layups and 3’s with very little in between.

The Clippers ran into dry spells in the middle quarters and couldn’t muster the firepower to recover in the final quarter.

Newburyport did put together a 9-1 run late to get to within four (60-56) with forty-six seconds left.  Layups by Eric Meyer, Chris Jayne, and Brett Fontaine plus a Chris Jayne trey provided the points.  However, Vinny Scifo (7 points) and Tim McCarthy (21 points) answered with six straight free throws to clinch the win for the Wildcats.

Tim McCarthy was impressive.  The Wilmington junior guard did not force his offense and set up several teammates for layups.  He nailed four 3’s and was 5-for-5 from the foul line.   He was an important part of the consistent offense Newburyport faced.

I mentioned two runs doing Newburyport in.  The first one was 10-3 in the second period.  Nick Godzyk and James Wilkinson put up the points for the Wildcats.  Nick had a three off the backboard in the mix.  I guess that’s when you know, as an opponent, that you may be in trouble.

Newburyport trailed 30-21 after that run.

The killer run started late in the 3rd quarter and went almost six minutes into the final period.  Newburyport was held to four points (Eric Meyer free throw & Matt Leavitt three) while the Wildcats collected thirteen points.

I mentioned Wilmington’s consistency.  During the 13-4 run, five different players contributed points.  The Clippers had only twelve turnovers during the game but five of them were during this 13-4 run including three in a row early in the 4th period.

Matt Leavitt (#3) shown here with Tim McCarthy hit four 3’s and led Clipper scorers with sixteen points.

The Clippers ended up with four players reaching double figures (Matt Leavitt-16, Eric Meyer-12, Chris Jayne-10, and Brett Fontaine-10).

Newburyport faced a solid man-to-man defense the whole game yet with their outside weave and slashes to the basket opened up some good shots.  Wilmington turned up enough open shots to generate the runs that won the game for them.

Eric Meyer (#44) tallied twelve points and drew plenty of defensive interest in the post.

With 6-5 Eric Meyer inside, the Clippers have the potential of a very effective inside-out game.  The Wildcats were very keen on keeping the ball out of the post and once it got there they sent help.

Ipswich Soccer Girls Reach Semi-Finals in D3 North With 1-0 Win Over Shawsheen

Courtney Long drills the winning goal past Shawsheen’s flinching Alyssa Martucci in the Ipswich D3 North win at Billerica on Tuesday afternoon.

(Billerica) It was almost a year ago to the day on the same field against the same team.  This time, however, there was a different result as the Ipswich girls soccer team eliminated #1 seed Shawsheen, 1-0, to advance to the semi-finals of the Division 3 North tournament.

The #9 seed Tigers (10-6-4) made a goal by Courtney Long in the first half’s drizzly conditions stand up.  Shawsheen (15-2-2), from the Commonwealth Athletic League, had a first round bye while Ipswich had to get by St.Mary’s on Sunday to reach this game.

I thought that the Tigers were a step quicker than the Rams most of the afternoon.  I never saw any sort of dangerous direct shot at Ipswich goalie Hannah O’Flynn in this contest.  In fact, Hannah’s father, Dr. Hugh O’Flynn, had more action than she did as he was on the field with five injured players (by my count) during the game.

I had a good look at Courtney’s first-half goal.  Ipswich had been awarded a direct kick.  The Rams set up a wall that might have blocked Courtney’s shot (painfully) but as she struck the shot the end girl on the wall (Alyssa Martucci) flinched to the right leaving an opening.  (Maybe the shot would have gone in whether she had moved to her right or not.)  Anyhow, the ball hit near the right corner at the bottom of the top crossbar and caromed down across the goal-line.

I don’t think that there was another open shot at either goal the rest of the game.  Hannah Weagle came close to getting a rebound in front of the Ram net in the second half and later Mary Krathwohl nearly broke through for a good shot.

Samantha Brown blocks a Sabrina Gomes (#7) clear.

One painful moment late was when Samantha Brown ended up with her face in front of a Sabrina Gomes clearing kick.  Sabrina was apologetic afterwards.

The Tigers now move on to the semi-final round of the tournament.  They will be facing Cape Ann League opponent Lynnfield (#4 seed) at 2:30 PM at Manning (turf) Field in Lynn on Thursday afternoon. These teams split during the regular season with Lynnfield winning at home in September while Ipswich won at home in October.

Late North Reading run snuffs out Amesbury 68-51

Stephan Deas – Has 27 points in Amesbury loss

(Amesbury) North Reading (9-4) finished its sweep of Amesbury with a 68-51 victory on Friday night at Amesbury.  They had won earlier in January at North Reading, 69-48.

The Indians (1-13) were coming off their first win Monday (vs Danvers) but after a competitive first period fell into a double-digit deficit in the second period (22-11).  Hornet’s senior Jeffrey Tyner (6’5”) did most of the damage in an 11-2 run with seven points on two baskets from in close and three free throws.

Amesbury’s lack of size (tallest player 6’3” Tyler Lay) and depth had them playing zone most of the night.  The Hornets attacked the zone with passing and patience and turned up plenty of high percentage shots ( 26-for-56 ) many after penetration.

Another unanswered run, this time of eight straight, ballooned the NR advantage, to 36-16, one minute into the second half.  It seemed like a good time to suspect that the rout was on but the home team had other ideas.

Fast forward ahead to just 2:46 left in the game and the Hornet lead had been trimmed to 56-48.  What happened?  NR certainly helped by misfiring on free throws (11-for-26 for the game) and three point shots (4-for-15 for the game).  On the other side, the electric Stephan Deas and co-captain Tyler Lay generated some offense.

Stephan, who poured in a game-high 27 points, contributed fourteen of them during the Indian rally.  The 5’5” sophomore used his quickness to get open and seldom missed when he got there.  NR used an assortment of defenses during the game to try to neutralize him.  The best matchup to watch was the Hornet’s Bobby Rosano defending him one-on-one.

Tyler nailed a couple of jumpers in a row (he had eight points during the rally) and that had NR head coach Joe Casey burning a timeout to try and ice the Indian attack.

Unfortunately, for Thom Connor’s squad, North Reading turned up twelve points on their next six possessions and Amesbury only three on a very late long one by Stephan.  A converted miss started the downfall, followed by a turnover that turned into a layup.  Four quick points and the Indians were toast.

Captain PJ Dionne (20 points) and junior Nick Rosano (16 points) paced NR’s scoring.  Both of them were quick enough to find openings in the Amesbury zone especially during the second half when they each had eleven points.
