Hamilton-Wenham Girls and Newburyport Boys Win 2011 Cape Ann League Cross Country Championships

(Topsfield) In a world with few certainties, the Hamilton-Wenham girls cross country team is the exception……..they show up and they win. They have now put in seven consecutive unbeaten Cape Ann League seasons after winning the Cape Ann League Cross Country Championships at chilly/rainy Bradley Palmer State Park on Saturday afternoon.
The undefeated Newburyport boys saved their best race of the season for this race as they placed four runners in the top six finishers and handily dispatched second-place Masconomet by 26 points.

Individually, the girls race for the top spot looked a lot like last year minus Alison Lanois (she’s now a freshman at Dartmouth). Rebecca Morse (2nd last year), Sarah Kiernan (3rd last year), and Kerry Phelan (4th last year) ran together ahead of the field with the final outcome in serious doubt.
You get four looks at the runners. Somewhere between the 3rd and 4th look, Kerry made her move to finish first at 18:46. Kerry was 15th in 2010 and improved her time by nearly 1 ½ minutes.
The race for second was settled on the mini-Heartbreak Hill just before the finish line as Mackenzie Shelgren ran down Sarah Keiran. Mackenzie was well off the three leaders for much of the race.
Rebecca Morse struggled in at 4th after losing only one race (to Sarah Kieran) all season.
Freshman Emily Weigand of HW rounded out the top five.
The HW girls winning total was 34 with finishes of 1st (Kerry Phelan), 5th (Emily Weigand), 7th (Claire Pacione), 10th (Meg Blatchford), and 11th (Emily Horgan).
The Masco girls ended up 2nd with 76 points while Pentucket was 3rd with 97 points.

Individually on the boys side, it was Alex Sullivan, of North Andover, and the battle for second. Undefeated all season, Alex took the lead early and won by fifteen seconds (16:23). Alex improved twelve spots over his 13th place finish in 2010.
The Newburyport trio of Keith Conway, Chris Suprin, and Nick Carleo battled among themselves for second and in the process put a damper on any thought 9-1 Masconomet might have had of a team upset. The Clipper threesome finished in that order in front of 5th place Marco Caserta of Masco.
Another Clipper, Joe Santo (6th) outran two other Masco runners (James Polakiewicz – 7th & Jake Moorman – 8th). When Chris Orlando arrived in 12th the deal was settled for Newburyport with 27 points.
Max Vye led Newburyport to victory in the the JV boys event.
Hamilton-Wenham took home first in the JV girls division.
The next two weekends have high school cross country events at Franklin Park including the state meet in two weeks. I might have to go to the state meet to see if the HW girls can collect a title.

Newburyport Boys and Hamilton-Wenham Girls Remain Undefeated in Cross Country
Two of the best cross country coaches around (Don Hennigar & Steve Sawyer) matched up at Maudslay State Park and both came away with a reason to smile.
(Newburyport) Two of the best, and I’m not just writing about the coaches, won easily at Maudslay State Park on a pleasant Wednesday afternoon in Cape Ann League cross country competition.
Chris Suprin (16:02) surged down the stretch to nip teammate Keith Conway for the win.
Don Hennigar’s undefeated Newburyport boys team (4-0) stayed that way capturing the first five spots. Steve Sawyer’s undefeated Hamilton-Wenham girls team (4-0) crossed the finish line in a six-member, first place blanket. Thanks to HW athletic secretary Dianne Bucco for identifying the girls in the picture for me.
HW stuck the Clipper boys with their only regular season loss in 2010.
Chris Suprin’s late race surge was enough to edge teammate Keith Conway for first place by a second – 16:01.

The HW girls finished in what looked like a normal workout mode with no effort made to lunge ahead late. The official gave the six HW girls the finishing cards and told them to sort out the order of finish among themselves.

Newburyport Sweeps North Andover in Cross Country

(Newburyport) The undefeated Newburyport (3-0) boys came at North Andover (2-1) in a bunch on Maudslay State Park’s 3-mile course and defeated the visitors, 22-35, in cross country on Wednesday afternoon in Cape Ann League competition.

NA‘s Alex Sullivan (16:00) easily won the event but had to wait over a minute before 6th place teammate (Greg Macarthur – 17:07) arrived. Meanwhile, Clipper runners Chris Suprin, Keith Conway, Joe Santo, and Nick Carleo took places 2-5. Sophomore Chris Orlando completed the Newburyport scoring with an 8th place finish.
The Newburyport Clipper girls (2-1) took out NA (2-1), 23-34, sweeping the first three spots.
Clipper senior Kiley Knowlton (20:40) finished alone. Forty seconds later teammates Kelly Conway and Erin Carroll were in. Getting those first three spots was crucial because the Knights covered 4-7, led by Danielle Poto. Newburyport’s Sarah Jacqz (8th) and Rachel Rikeman (9th) ended the NA streak of runners.

The Hamilton-Wenham Generals are Newburyport’s next opponent next Wednesday at Maudslay.
This was the first cross country meet I’ve been to at the state park. The temperature’s were probably too high for the runners’ liking but comfortable for those of us watching. For some reason the meet started nearly an hour late but that just seemed to increase the interaction time among runners and among spectators. I was pleasantly surprised that bugs weren’t an issue.
(I try to be accurate in these accounts. Spelling matters to me. Identifying runners accurately matters to me. Mistakes are unintentional.)

2011 Yankee Homecoming Race Winners: Justin Freeman, Lesley Hocking, Tim Murtagh, Kirsten Kasper
Justin Freeman (New Hampton NH) wins the 51st Yankee Homecoming 10 mile race in 52:18 in Newburyport
One mile into the 5K race - Aldous Strother (#2173), Daniel Blouin (#2339), Tim Murtagh (#521) and Kevin Alliette (#2895) - Tim ended up 1st, Kevin 2nd, Aldous 3rd, and Daniel 4th
(Newburyport MA) The usual large turnout plus some unusually cooler temperatures made a nice setting for runners and spectators at the 51st annual 5K/10M Yankee Homecoming racing events on Tuesday night.
Tim Murtagh (Rowley/Connecticut College) held off Kevin Alliette (Methuen/UMassLowell) to take the 5K race. Later, it was Justin Freeman (New Hampton NH/Bates) cruising to victory in the 10 mile event.
I was positioned at the one-mile mark (in front of the Cushing Museum) to see the early part of both races. It was a good place to be because the front-runners there turned out to be in a similar position later. The first four finishers in the 5K were in a pack in the front at one mile.
The slight exception to being in front early was 10-mile winner Justin Freeman. He was back in 6th there but explained later in the Newburyport News article that he had messed himself up in two previous races here by going out too fast.

It was a surprise that the cooler (for August – 70s) weather didn’t produce some sort of record times. Maybe the field wasn’t as strong as it has been in the past??
Chris Suprin and Keith Conway of Newburyport High School ran well early in the 5K and Chris was around to pick up 6th place at the end. Keith was 12th.
Pat Rich of South Hamilton was 5th in the 10 miler. He has been involved in the high school track programs at Hamilton-Wenham and Ipswich.
Greg Krathwohl of Ipswich High and Middlebury College (VT) finished eleventh in the 10M.
Joseph Navas came in eighth in the 10M. I learned from his wife, while waiting for the runners to arrive at the finish line, that he had proposed to her at the finish line of the Boston Marathon and that they had gone on their honeymoon to New York so that he could run in the New York Marathon.
Newburyport High School runners Keith Conway (#2058) finished 12th and Chris Suprin (#187) finished 6th.
Lesley Hocking from Dover (NH) was the first woman finisher in the 10M while Kirsten Kasper from North Andover (would former Bruins’ coach Steve Kasper be her father??) led the women in the 5K.

Newburyport Boys Second in MIAA Eastern Division 4 at Franklin Park

A whole bunch of us didn’t know enough to come in out of the rain!
The MIAA opted to ignore the forecasted rainy, windy conditions and go ahead with the Eastern State Division Finals at Franklin Park on Saturday. I’m glad they did because cross country is an “all weather” sport in my opinion.
This event is well worth attending because you get a good look at the runners most of the time. In many races, the runners disappear into the woods and out of sight for much of the race – not at Franklin Park.
But you talk about “off” conditions. The mud was in evidence everywhere. Several places on the course had puddles with unknown depth. Then there was the occasional gust of serious wind.
But, surprising to me, I never saw a runner slip. I heard after several races, runners chattering about the fun they’d had on the course. Those puddles came in handy afterwards for cleaning purposes.
I doubt that most of the spectators were as thrilled. Keeping dry, even with a good umbrella, was impossible. If you got close enough to the runners, you risked getting splattered with mud.
I went to see how Ipswich’s Greg Krathwohl would do against better competion, after I had seen him dominate the CALs. He did quite well getting 3rd. He was very much in the mix for the lead for a good part of the race. In the end, the two runners who had finished ahead of him at Franklin Park last year did the same once again.

I also hoped to be on hand for the Newburyport boys winning the East in Division 4. That didn’t happen as they finished second to Seekonk.

The first race I saw was Division 2 girls and Jenna Davidner of Oliver Ames won easily.
Alanna Poretta of Pentucket took 5th in Division 3 and seemed out of sorts with the weather. She dominated the CAls but in this one she lost touch with the front runners early and never regained it.
Alanna will get another chance as will Greg Krathwohl and the Newburyport team on Saturday (November 21st) at Northfield.
Newburyport Boys’ Cross Country Team Undefeated In Regular Season
October 27th (Tuesday) – At Woodsom Farm in Amesbury, I saw the Newburyport boys’ cross country team complete an undefeated (12-0) season in the Cape Ann League.
Host Amesbury provided little opposition, in fact the way the Clipper runners were grouped together; it looked like a training exercise especially at the front.

The local paper, which I suspect viewed the race from Liberty Street, had all the runners finishing in first in some sort of blanket finish. My photo, taken at the finish line, would suggest otherwise. The winner was clearly Senior Matt Getz.
The local paper also listed the eight tied for first as; Matt Getz, Brian Morse, Sean Hickman, Ryan Clark, Greg Englehart, Chris Suprin, Chris Jayne, and Keith Conway. Again referencing my photo from the finish line, I see Matt Getz (who clearly was the winner) and EIGHT runners behind him. Someone was left off the local paper’s list. I wonder whom? I’ll post it here if someone sends the info to my email address – 85peterjulie17 at gmail dot com.
Matt Tolley raced off to the early lead.
Coach Don Hennigar told me at NHS on Thursday that he thought that this was the first undefeated boys team he’s had since 2003.

The Clipper girls were just as dominating versus Amesbury. Four Clipper runners took the lead together early and ran that way (training workout style) the entire way. I wouldn’t attempt to pick a winner even using my photo of the finish.
The big event for these teams is Saturday (October 31st) afternoon at Bradley Palmer Park. This would be the Cape Ann League championships. The varsity teams run at 2PM (girls) and 2:30PM (boys).
I expect that the boys will be severely tested by both Masco (11-1) and Hamilton-Wenham (10-2).
The young Clipper girls completed the regular season at 5-7 and may surprise some folks at Bradley Palmer.
