Triton recovers from time off to defeat Saugus 4-1 in D2 North First Round

CF Emma Howard makes a terrific running catch to end the Triton 3rd inning

Shortstop Bridget Sheehan starred in the field and at the bat

(Byfield MA) It had been a long time.

Seventeen days away from actual-game activity slowed down Triton for a while, but the Vikings rallied to take out Saugus 4-1 in the D2 North First Round.

New territory for Triton.  The Vikings last won a game in the MIAA softball tournament in 2006.

“It was weird not to play for so long,” said senior Zoe Cesati afterwards.  “When we scrimmaged yesterday I almost felt like I had never played softball before.”

The home team erased a 1-0 deficit with two runs after two were out in the third inning, driven in by Zoe Cesati and Bridget Sheehan.

Triton (17-2) would add two more (again with two out) in the fifth inning.  This time Zoe and Bridget scored the runs after a 3-base error by RF Nystasia Rowe.

It was a frustrating loss for the Sachems (11-10).  “The difference today was our inability to get timely hits,” said Coach Steve Almquist.  And who could argue?  Saugus had two runners in scoring position in four different innings (twice with no outs) and scored just one run.

Bridget Sheehan gets an assist from her knees

The defense of Triton shortstop Bridget Sheehan had plenty to do with the multitude of stranded runners.  The Vikings junior had four putouts and four assists.  Two special assists were one from her knees, and another from deep in the hole to her right that required a tough stop and a long/strong throw.

None of the Bridget’s defensive highlights were news to Coach Dupere.  “That’s Bridget all year.  She is in my opinion the best player in the Cape Ann League.  Nothing surprises me with her.”

At the plate, Bridget was 3-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored.

The Sachems (Northeast Conference) scored first.  In the second inning, a single, a walk, and a wild pitch set up two of the visitors in scoring position with no outs.  Sophomore Taylor Bogdanski drove across pinchrunner Cat Schema with a single to center.  Taylor stole second to again put two runners in scoring position, but Triton pitcher Katherine Quigley retired the next three Sachems.

1B Sadie DiCenso made a nice catch for Saugus

“We started off a little shaky,” explained Katherine.  “I needed a couple of innings to settle in.”

The Vikings took the lead in the third inning with two runs, but anyone at the game will tell you that they would have had more but not for a terrific 2-out running catch by CF Emma Howard.

The Sachems had two on (Taylor Bogdanski and Madison Niles) with one out in the 4th but 3B Colleen McCarthy handled two straight chances to end the threat.

The Vikings gained a 3-run advantage in the 5th on the 3-base error in the SHS outfield.  I wanted to credit the batter (Emily Karvielis) with a triple but Coach Almquist said it was an error.  “The sun was tough, but it had been that way the whole game.  She should have adjusted to the sun by the fifth inning.”  Emily’s fly appeared to hit Nystasia glove and then roll away allowing two Triton runs to cross.

The happenings in the Triton 5th impacted what Saugus did in the top of the 6th inning.  After Sadie DiCenso reached on 3B Colleen McCarthy’s throwing error, freshman Kyleigh Dalton was sent in to pinch run.  When Taylor Bogdanski walked, the Sachems had the makings of a productive inning.  Not on this day.  “We would normally have bunted,” said Coach Almquist, “but down three runs we had DJ Munafo hit away.”  DJ hit the ball on the ground toward short and Kyleigh couldn’t get out of the way and was hit by the grounder for the first out.  A fielder’s choice moved both runners up with two outs.  This was where Bridget Sheehan flagged down Ashley Shaw’s grounder and threw an inning-ending strike to first.

Saugus baserunner Kyleigh Dalton (1) ruled out after a grounder hit her.

Triton continues their season on Sunday against Burlington at 1PM at Triton.

Good crowd.  I arrived in the rain but before long we had a “typical” June afternoon.

Coach Dupere: “Saugus was scrappy.  We knew it would be tough.  We had hits when we needed them, and our pitcher did her job.  During out days off, we hit fourteen days but only saw live pitching once.”

Coach Almquist: “Caitlin Wood (6 K’s) pitched every game for us.  We didn’t give her enough run support today.  We lost five 0ne-run games during the season.  This is the third straight year we’ve made the tournament.  We only graduate one player.”

Zoe Cesati gets 2B as Taylor Bogdanski applies a late tag

Triton catcher Liv Doanes: “I was a little worried at first because we weren’t hitting. We usually start hitting once we get through the batting order.  Bridget (Sheehan) has saved us quite a few times.”

Liv told me that she will be attending UMass Boston and hopes to play softball there.

Caitlin Wood and Taylor Bogdanski paced Saugus with two hits apiece.

Senior Zoe Cesati had a hit, and RBI, and scored two runs.

Triton gets 11th straight with 8-3 win over Newburyport

Emily Karvielis waits for throw from Bridget Sheehan as Meg Winn slides

Triton coach Dave Dupere congratulates Zoe Cesati

(Byfield MA) “Where’s Triton?’”

“In Byfield, where’s that?”

I’m expecting some strangers to show up to watch Triton softball in the near future.  Possibly tomorrow at the Manchester-Essex game but certainly at Monday’s showdown with 14-1 North Reading.

What’s all the excitement?  The Vikings are having a season to remember.  They’ve won eleven straight and are making loud noises in Division Two.  The Boston Herald has Triton ranked 25th in that division today.

This afternoon, Triton (14-1) rallied past Newburyport, 8-3.

“We’ve been underestimated all season,” said CF Zoe Cesati afterwards.

Zoe bounced a two-run homer (first of the year) off the top of the center field fence in Triton’s three-run sixth that gave the home team a 7-2 cushion.

Newburyport shortstop Meg Winn finishes a double play

I chose to do today’s game because I was certain that Newburyport (8-7) was better than the team I saw taken out 17-1 in five innings by Triton on May 1st.

And right I was.  For three innings today, the Clippers looked capable of pulling a huge upset.  Triton?  Very shaky in the field in the first inning and able to get only two hits in three innings off NHS starter Paige Gouldthorpe.

That shaky defense (three errors) cost Triton two runs and Paige’s pitching had the home team down, 2-0, after three.

“We’ve been down early before and have responded well,” said Triton coach Dave Dupere afterwards.

Bridget Sheehan (3) heads home on a triple by Emily Karvielis

And respond they did.  The defense tightened, and the hits followed.

“Everyone started hitting,” explained RF Dani West. “That’s what we needed.”

The Vikings batted around in the 4th inning, collecting four runs on five hits.  “Hitting is our primary focus in practice,” said Coach Dupere. “We play good defense, but we’ve got to hit to win games.”

Triton finished with eleven hits on the afternoon.  Junior Bridget Sheehan led the way with three hits and the Cape Ann League All-Star scored three times.

The Vikings would add a run in the fifth and three more in the sixth.

Taylor Penniman beats out a bunt

Newburyport had seven hits getting three of them (Meg Winn, Annie Siemasko, Liv Salvatore) in the 7th and producing a run.

Annie Siemasko and Liv Salvatore each had two hits.  Meg Winn scored twice.

Taylor Penniman and Grace McGonagle had two hits apiece for the Vikings.

Annie Siemasko and Zoe Cesati both made nice running catches in center field.

Newburyport shortstop Meg Winn turned a double play on an infield grounder.

“I have to credit Grace McGonagle,” added Coach Dupere. “The kid gets on every time up!”  Grace had two hits, a walk, and was hit by a pitch.

Carisa Boyle slides into second

Emily Karvielis had a run-producing triple in the sixth.  Defensively she had five assists and handled three popups.

SeniorDani West (RF) plans to attend Wentworth in the fall to study architecture.  Glad to learn from Dani that her mother was better.  Dani’s mother was hit by a foul ball at Amesbury earlier in the month.  “She has a little concussion and coach now has a special helmet for her to wear at our games.”

“Defensively, we were spotty in the first inning, but we cleaned it up after that,” said Coach Dupere.

Pitcher Katherine Quigley was the winning pitcher.  She is 13-1 this season.  The sophomore seldom overpowers anyone but pitches to spots and lets Triton’s defense take care of the rest.  Katherine gave up one earned run today.

Shortstop Bridget Sheehan looks for the last grounder

Shortstop Bridget Sheehan finished the game handling an obstructed-view grounder.

Dave Dupere was leery about looking past the ME game tomorrow toward Monday’s rematch with North Reading.  So I’ll do it.  The Vikings lost 6-2 on April 18th at North Reading.  Catcher Tara Driver had three homers for the Hornets.  Tara will be going to D1 Niagara on a softball scholarship.  Find a way to minimize Tara and Triton could come away with a CAL title.  By the way, both teams are in Division 2 so a third game between the two might be in the cards come tournament time.  Pentucket did the Vikings a huge favor yesterday by defeating NR 7-3, ending a long (since 2015) winning streak the Hornets had going in the Cape Ann League.  The CAL title should be on the line on Monday afternoon in Byfield.

North Reading runs CAL streak to thirty-two defeating Triton 11-9

Cassidy Gaeta (#11) had two home runs against Triton

Tara Driver put North Reading ahead in the 7th with a 2-out, 2-run single.

(Byfield MA) North Reading rallied for six runs in the final two innings to overtake Triton, 11-9, on a cold, drizzly Monday afternoon of Cape Ann League softball.

The Hornets (16-1) were two outs away in the seventh inning from getting their CAL winning streak stopped at thirty-one straight.

But the visitors capitalized on a throwing error (3B Tessa Boyle) and some daring baserunning by sophomore Emma Valade to tie the score.  Triton RF Kendall Mitchell ran toward the infield to record the 2nd out of the inning and might have had a play at the plate to end the game but didn’t throw home right away and Emma was in easily.

Now with runners on second and third with two outs, the Vikings faced Tara Driver (one home run).  The thought of walking Tara was probably considered but the next batter was Cassidy Gaeta (two home runs).

The choice was to pitch to Tara.  This time the junior did not go long ball but instead went “smart” ball driving an outside pitch through the Triton infield into right field scoring two teammates.

The two-run cushion held up in the Triton seventh and North Reading maintained their lengthy CAL winning streak that goes back to May 18, 2015 when they lost to Pentucket.

2B Emily Karvalis chases a blooper into center

The Vikings (10-7) have lost three tough ones (two by one run) in a row.

Triton whacked sixteen hits against Christina Simblaris and Cassandra Pascucci and had baserunners in every inning but the fifth.  Everyone in the Vikings’ batting order reached base.

Steady shortstop play by Bridget Sheehan continues.

Pitcher Katherine Quigley had a life-threatening moment when Cassidy Gaeta ripped a liner at her.  Nice to see that Katherine was wearing a mask.  I would like to see masks on everyone in the infield.

How did Triton lose this game?  Too many mistakes.

The home team survived an infield error (3B Tess Boyle) in the second but a drop by Kendra Beauparlant (LF) scored an NR run in the third.

Colleen McCarthy out at third

Bad baserunning caught up to Triton in the 3rd when pinchrunner Taylor Penniman tried to score from 2nd on an infield pop single.  In the 4th Colleen McCarthy attempted to advance from second to third on an overthrow but was gunned down by North Reading CF Haley MacIntyre.

Plenty of hitting stars on both sides.  Triton’s Zoe Cesati, Bridget Sheehan, and Olivia Doane each had three hits.  Zoe scored three times.  Emily Karvalis drove three runs across while Olivia and Colleen McCarthy had 2 RBI apiece.

North Reading collected eleven hits off freshman Katherine Quigley.  Three of them left the field.  Tara Driver had four hits, drove in three runs, including the game winners, and scored three.  Senior Cassidy Gaeta had two two-run homers.

The Hornets only loss so far was last Thursday 6-4 against Marblehead.

Triton can take heart that they gave NR a competitive game.  That hasn’t been the case in recent years.  In 2016 NR won 17-6 and 12-0.  In 2015 it was 16-0 and 15-1.

The weather continues to unimpress me!  I’m wearing winter boots and a winter hat on May 22nd?

It was an entertaining game despite the conditions.

Seniors from both teams were honored before the game.

Rockport wildness hands Triton 10-7 softball win

Bridget Sheehan set to catch a wild throw.

Walks led to Triton runs in the 5th and 6th innings

(Byfield MA) Walks in quantity will always get a team in trouble.

That team was Rockport this afternoon as they handed Triton a 10-7 win on a misty, cold Monday afternoon of Cape Ann League softball.

Rockport was up 5-3 going into the bottom of the 5th inning.  Then finding the strike zone became a problem for pitchers Jordan Fears, Miranda Roller, and Taylor Frost.  Two innings and TEN walks later Triton collected seven runs and took the lead for good.

Credit the visitors.  Down 10-5 in the final inning, Rockport had consecutive singles by Katie Favaloro, Jackie Connelly, and Cassie Camille to close to 10-7.  They even had the tying run at the plate. The rally wilted, however, as Lauren Ryan was caught stealing and Triton pitcher Katherine Quigley registered her second strikeout getting Taylor Frost for the final out after a lengthy at bat.

Rockport (2-3) had ten hits including three by Katie Favaloro who also scored three times.

Triton (3-3) also had plenty of baserunners notching nine hits.  Bridget Sheehan had three hits and scored three runs.  Teammate Zoe Cesati had two hits while crossing the plate four times.

Miranda Roller homered over the fence in left center.  The senior was a CAL first-teamer last season.  She will be attending Merrimack in the fall and expects to try out for their softball team.

Shortstop Bridget Sheehan made a play that a “6-3” in the scorebook would do zero justice to.  The sophomore dove to her right to stop a hard-hit grounder, got to her knees and made a long, accurate throw to nab Charlotte Salmon.

Later, Bridget backed up a play at third to prevent a run from scoring.

Katherine Quigley picked up the win for Triton. The freshman also had a 2-run double

Freshman Katherine Quigley had a 2-run double to right in the 5th inning to tie the score.

Rockport had defeated Triton four straight times before today’s game.

Rockport was 11-9 last season while Triton was 7-11.

Rachel Haselgard, Zoe Cesati, and Bridget Sheehan made the Cape Ann League second team last season.

The weather was just plain ugly.  Too cold.  Too damp.  The conditions, however, didn’t keep friends/family from both teams from attending.

Next game for Triton is at Hamilton-Wenham on Wednesday.  Rockport hosts Manchester-Essex tomorrow.

Newburyport loses to Triton 13-11 despite eighteen hits

Freshman Bridget Sheehan started a crucial double play for Triton in the 7th inning

(Byfield MA) This game could have used instant replay, a scoreboard, and a calculator!

Triton managed to defeat Newburyport, 13-11, in a wild Cape Ann League softball game on Monday afternoon at Triton.

The Clippers (6-7) trailed 12-3 after four innings but exploded for an eight-run fifth to make things very interesting.

Because of all the activity in that wild Newburyport fifth I lost track of the score and didn’t realize until later that the Clippers were just a run back after that half inning.

Senior Julia Hartman’s solo homer in the bottom of the fifth gave the Vikings (7-3) a two-run cushion (13-11) that barely held up.

Newburyport had the bases loaded in the seventh inning after consecutive singles (Caitlin Clarke, Olivia Salvatore, Emily Dobson).  Key play of the game?  Next batter (Skyla Harrington) hit a hard liner that Triton shortstop Bridget Sheehan speared to her right.  NHS pinchrunner Megan Rogers took off from third on contact and Bridget doubled her off.  Triton pitcher Grace McGonagle was then able to end the game with a caught looking on Colleen Twomey.

Emily Dobson had a homer and a double in the Newburyport 5th

Emily Dobson had a homer and a double in the Newburyport 5th

That Triton “limited” Newburyport to only eleven runs was truly remarkable.  The Clippers had eighteen hits and stranded thirteen baserunners in a seven inning game!  The Clippers left the bases loaded in the 7th and two on in the 2nd, 4th, and 5th.  Twice innings were ended on the base paths: baserunner interference (Emily Dobson) and caught stealing (Stephanie Gleason).  I am not sure that I have ever seen a game in which there were more wasted opportunities.

The visitors led 3-1 going into the Triton second.  There the Vikings dropped seven runs on the Clippers.  The Vikings had only two hits in the inning but a bad mix of walks, wild pitches, and errors helped Triton.  Key hits by Zoe Cesati and Julia Hartman drove in runs.  Stephanie Gleason came on to relieve NHS starter Paige Gouldthorpe and pitched the rest of the game.

Bridget Sheehan tags out Stephanie Gleason to end the Newburyport 6th inning

Bridget Sheehan tags out Stephanie Gleason to end the Newburyport 6th inning

The Triton lead expanded to 12-3 with three runs in the 4th inning.  RBIs in that inning were collected by Emma McGonagle, Julia Hartman, and Chelsea Gordon.

Thoughts of the Mercy Rule danced in my head after Triton led 12-3 but the Clippers in the fifth inning were anything but done.  They whacked Grace McGonagle for nine hits including a homer (Stephanie Gleason) and double and a homer for Emily Dobson.

And anyone at this game will tell you that there was a play during that inning that was hard to figure out.  Bases loaded for Newburyport.  A full-swing squibber rolls just beyond home plate.  The batter drops the bat as she runs to first and the bat lands on top of the ball.  The call?  Batter is out and the runner who was on third is also out.  Nifty double play.  Despite that call Newburyport sent thirteen batters to the plate and tallied eight runs to close to a run.

Zoe Cesati had three hits for Triton

Zoe Cesati had three hits for Triton

Everyone in the Newburyport batting order had at least one hit and scored at least one run.  Junior Emily Dobson topped the Clippers with four hits.  Stephanie Gleason and Olivia Salvatore had three apiece.

Julia Hartman and Zoe Cesati paced Triton with three hits each.  Julia’s homer in the 6th inning was a key piece in the Triton victory.

This was the rematch of an 11-4 Triton win in Newburyport in April.

Plenty of sports activity at Triton on this afternoon.  Besides two softball games there were two baseball games, a tennis match and lacrosse practice happening.

Good to see work being done on Triton’s new football stadium.  Supposed to be ready in the fall.
