(Billerica)  Billerica won their thirteenth straight home game as they defeated Masconomet, 64-42, in Division 1 North quarterfinals action on Saturday afternoon.

The #2 seed Indians (20-2) move on to the semifinals on Wednesday (7PM) at Woburn HS against the Lexington/Westford winner.

The Chieftains (16-6) struggled to score after a nice (14-12) first quarter.  Billerica’s half-court defense caused few turnovers but it did limit where Masco could shoot from (mostly outside) and also limited second shots.

The outcome of this game was still in doubt with two minutes left in the third quarter with Billerica holding a, 40-33, lead.  5 ½ minutes of playing time later, stretching into the final quarter, the outcome mystery had been solved.

Shannon Hayes (12 points)

Shannon Hayes (12 points)

The Indians rolled up a remarkable sixteen straight unanswered points during those 5 ½ minutes and #7 seed Masco was down and out, 56-33, with 4 ½ minutes to play.

Caroline Gillis started the big run of points with a three and later on Lexie Mattar stuck a jump shot.  The rest of it was free throws and what free throw shooting the packed house at BHS saw.  The Indians missed their first attempt (Danielle Nickerson) but never missed again in the fifteen attempts covering the rest of the game.

The Indians had eleven free throws in the sixteen-point outburst that decided this game.

The Indians had four players in double figures.  Joslyn King (14 points) paced Billerica.  The 6-1 senior also had plenty to do with preventing Masco from gaining easy access to close-in shots.

Danielle Nickerson (13), Shannon Hayes (12), and Kayla Leverone (10) were the other Indians in double figures.

Junior Nicole Femino (17 points) led the Masco scorers.  Nicole had twelve of those points in the first half.  Claudia Marsh closed out her Masco basketball career with eleven points getting nine of them in the first half.

Claudia Marsh (11 points)

Claudia Marsh (11 points)

The Chieftains had a great start zipping ahead, 8-2, as Claudia tallied a layup and converted a rebound.  She had another layup later in the quarter and Masco led, 14-12, when it was over.

The visitors from the Cape Ann League fell behind in the second quarter but a three by Nicole Femino had Masco one possession away (25-24) with two minutes until the half.

Billerica answered with two layups by speedy Shannon Hayes and a three by Kayla Leverone.  Meghan Collins hit a free throw to stop the bleeding before halftime but the Indians started the second half with two more baskets (Danielle Nickerson and Joslyn King) and led by eleven (36-25).

The reality of the end of the season sets in for Masconomet

The reality of the end of the season sets in for Masconomet

On this day, Masco just could not get the stops needed to give them space to catch up.  And then when they were hit with the sixteen point run their season was over.

I had seen both teams lose to Division 3 Pentucket.  What the Sachems were able to do was to disrupt both teams into costly turnovers.

In the Billerica/Masconomet game, the solid defense of the Indians and their amazing free throw shooting carried the day.

Masconomet made six-of-seventeen free throws.

Continuing with free throws, I saw Billerica lose at Andover last season to Nicole Boudreau’s team by a point in a game where the Indians missed four free throws in the last 1 ½ minutes of that game.  And today they made 15 straight!  Go figure.

The Billerica gymnasium was just the right size for the crowd that showed up.  BHS Athletic Director Dave Lezenski did a wonderful job of monitoring the behavior of the Indians student section.  Several students were informed that their comments should only be directed at the home team.

Pentucket defeats Masconomet 44-43 in overtime as Tess Nogueira gets twenty points

Tess Nogueira (20 points) drives on Claudia Marsh

Tess Nogueira (20 points) drives on Claudia Marsh

(West Newbury)  It is not often that you see two good teams have so much trouble shooting and taking care of the ball.

But those on hand at Pentucket High School saw a night full of misfiring and mishandles before the Sachems (15-1) eked out a, 44-43, overtime win over Masconomet (11-3) on Friday night in Cape Ann League action.

Tess Nogueira made ten free throws in fourteen attempts

Tess Nogueira made ten free throws in fourteen attempts

No question the key to the Pentucket win was the steady play of Tess Nogueira.  The 6-foot senior led all scorers with twenty points and owned the boards.

Masco had Pentucket on the ropes (40-36 with 1:11 left) in regulation.  However, a Tess Nogueira offensive rebound and two Chieftain turnovers opened the door for the Sachems to get back and get overtime.

The four-minute overtime fit perfectly into the pattern established in regulation – missed opportunities galore.  Masco didn’t make any shot until the final buzzer!

Kelsi McNamara missed two free throws with 2 ½ minutes remaining in OT.  However, Tess Nogueira made two with 1:02 to go and Pentucket had a 42-40 lead.

Nicole Femino (14 points) about to launch a buzzer-beating three in overtime

Nicole Femino (14 points) about to launch a buzzer-beating three in overtime

Nicole Femino (14 points) then missed both free throws with forty-three seconds left but a Pentucket turnover gave Masco another chance with fourteen seconds left.

However, the visitors messed up the inbounds pass (Tess was in the vicinity of where the pass went) and now the Chieftains were forced to foul (Kelsi McNamara) with 7.7 seconds left.  Kelsi had missed two earlier in OT but this time she connected twice to give the Sachems a four-point advantage.

Good thing, for Pentucket, that Kelsi made both of them because Nicole Femino tossed in a buzzer-beating three.

It is easy to harp on the poor shooting and turnovers and forget that both teams are loaded with tireless defenders.  In a gym that is always tropical, the wear-and-tear of facing game-long Pentucket pressure will usually cause trouble.  By my count, the Chieftains had thirty turnovers.

Another factor in the Masco loss was Claudia Marsh getting into foul trouble.  Claudia picked up her third foul late in the first half and fouled out late in the game.  Her strong defense on Tess Nogueira was sorely missed for many minutes.  Claudia scored a basket at the buzzer to end the third quarter.

There were ten lead changes and neither team was able to get ahead by more than four points.

Meghan Collins and Kate Kitsakos connected on consecutive three’s in the fourth quarter.

Kassidy Kennefick gets into the lane

Kassidy Kennefick gets into the lane

Kassidy Kennefick came off the Sachem bench in the first quarter to hit a quick long one.

One of the biggest baskets in the game was a jump shot in the lane by McKenna Kilian off a missed Kelsi McNamara shot in the last thirty seconds of regulation.

Pentucket was determined to spread the Masco man-to-man defense and get to the hoop for layups or foul shots.  On this night making the layups, under heavy Masco defensive pressure, was difficult.  The Sachems did get thirty-four free throws out of attacking the basket and made twenty-two of them.  Tess Nogueira was 10-for-14.

This game featured two of the areas most successful coaches.  John McNamara in his 7th season with Pentucket is now 149-19.  Bob Romeo in his 11th season is 175-51.

John McNamara and Bob Romeo

John McNamara and Bob Romeo

Pentucket won the first meeting in December with Masco, 45-33.

Pentucket suffered its only loss of the season on January 26th at Hingham against Division 2 Notre Dame.  A week earlier, at Pentucket, the Sachems had won.

Masconomet hosts Hamilton-Wenham on Tuesday.  Pentucket will visit North Reading on the same day.

Good crowd on hand.  We saw some organized Sachem support late in the game.

Masconomet survives late North Andover rally to win 52-41 in nonleague girls basketball

Tight defense helped the Chieftains get a big lead

Tight defense helped the Chieftains get a big lead

Pam Coufos (10) steals from Meghan Collins (5) late in the game

Pam Coufos (10) steals from Meghan Collins (5) late in the game

(Topsfield)  The Masconomet Lady Chieftains never trailed but had to hold off the late-charging North Andover Scarlet Knights to win, 52-41, on Sunday afternoon in non-league play.

Masco (10-2) was smooth as silk on offense for 3 ½ quarters.  They ran plays that turned up many great scoring opportunities and built a commanding, 48-32, lead with 3:48 left in regulation.

I imagined a Masco coast-in from there but North Andover had other ideas.  After spending most of the game trying to find someone/anyone to pass to, the Knights began to use their pressure defense to create offense.

Led by Pam Coufos (two steals leading to two layups), the Division 2 visitors put together nine straight points in two minutes.  Five straight Masco miscues certainly helped, as NA closed to 48-41 with 1 ½ minutes left in the game.

But that was where the late run came to an end for the Knights.  Leah Chittick (eight points) missed the front end of a one-and-one that could have cut the lead to five. Then the Chieftains put a lengthy possession together (finally) and Nicole Femino (12 points) drove the lane to the left to squelch NA’s rally plans.

Morgan Lumb (on crutches) gives Abi Rose flowers

Morgan Lumb (on crutches) gives Abi Rose flowers

North Andover (9-3) struggled against the Masconomet pressure defense from beginning to end.  The Knights are trying to get used to life without Division 1 (Hartford) signee Morgan Lumb and it is clearly a work in progress.

When healthy, Morgan was able to make plays for herself ( I saw her get fifteen points in one quarter in a state tournament game last year against Tewksbury) and she could also set up teammates.

Megan Collins (17 points) supplied points for the Knights but there were very few assisted baskets for NA.

However, despite registering seventeen turnovers during the first half, NA trailed only 26-19 at halftime.

Claudia Marsh (nine points) shoots over McKenzie Mello

Claudia Marsh (nine points) shoots over McKenzie Mello

However, Masco’s last basket in the first half (Claudia Marsh layup) started ten straight unanswered points for the Division 1 home team.  Hannah Kiernan contributed two layups while Nicole Femino and Meghan Collins each added a pair of free throws in the ten-point surge that boosted the Chieftain advantage to 34-19 in the third quarter.

Masco started another run of unanswered scoring (seven) late in the third quarter that stretched their margin to 45-26 two minutes into the final quarter.

That lead would extend to 48-32 before NA made the late charge.

The very idea that North Andover had Masconomet on the ropes in this game is truly remarkable considering: (1) they played without Morgan Lumb, (2) they turned the ball over thirty times, and (3) they committed eighteen fouls and forced Coach Sue Breen to employ all sorts of unusual on-floor combinations.  Perhaps the biggest problem was point guard Pam Coufos getting limited first-half minutes because of three fouls.

Hannah Kiernan (15 points) took the ball to the basket on every opportunity for Masco and was rewarded numerous times with baskets or free throws.  She had an end-to-end drive in the fourth quarter.

Coach John McNamara (Pentucket) was an interested spectator.  His team faces Masco at Masco on February 1st.  The Lady Chieftains will certainly have to cut down on their turnovers (twenty-three) if they hope to avenge an early-season loss to the Division 3 Sachems.

North Andover, formerly in the Cape Ann League,  brought flowers for the Masconomet seniors.

Two of the three terrific National Anthem singers

Two of the three terrific National Anthem singers

The best part of the afternoon at Masconomet was the singing of the National Anthem by three little ladies.  I won’t try to guess their ages but their pitch and their diction was unbelievable.

It was a long afternoon for some of the North Andover faithful.  They had plenty of comments for the two officials about the frequent whistles, the eighteen fouls called against their Knights, and finally the eleven-point loss.  And then they had to go home and watch what the Ravens did to our Patriots!

Masconomet runs away from Newburyport 62-32 in girls basketball

(Newburyport) After losing badly to the cream of Division 3 (Pentucket) on Friday, Newburyport hoped for a better outing against Masconomet.

Didn’t happen.

Masco (6-2) ran away from the Clippers, 62-32, on Monday night at Newburyport.

“Ran away” is a good description because the Chieftains put fastbreak after fastbreak on the cold shooting home team.  The Clippers (3-4) got caught numerous times chasing offensive rebounds instead of getting back on defense.

When Masco wasn’t getting layups (they had fourteen) they were getting foul shots (they had twenty-eight).

The Chieftains made eighteen free throws.

Aly Leahy tries to split two Chieftain defenders

Aly Leahy tries to split two Chieftain defenders

Aly Leahy of Newburyport opened the scoring with a free throw.  Nicole Femino (14 points) matched that and then sent Hannah Kiernan (12 points) off on a breakaway layup.  Hannah’s basket gave Masco the lead (3-1) for good.

Masco led, 14-6, after one quarter and doubled it to, 28-12, at halftime.

The Chieftains started the second half with a 12-4 run over 3 ½ minutes to increase their lead to, 40-16.  Sophomore Meghan Collins (8 points) scored the first two baskets, one on a nice spin move.

During the last 12 ½ minutes of the game Newburyport was only outscored, 22-16, but this was not a night in which a late rally materialized.

Janelle Shea blocks the shot of Mary Pettigrew

Janelle Shea blocks the shot of Mary Pettigrew

There was no point in the game where the Clippers were able to put more than four points together in a row.  Cold shooting was part of it but the Chieftains were defending well inside – Newburyport scored four layups in the game.

On the other hand, because of the frequency of layups, Masco ran points together. On seven different occasions they scored at least six points in a row.

Lilly Donovan (9 points) paced Newburyport.  She hit a three in the first quarter that went off the backboard.

Casey Barlow (8 points) was credited with a basket when her attempt at a pass under the basket was deflected in off a Masconomet player.

Coach Bob Romeo of Masco was deep into his bench late in the first half.  He ended up having eleven different players score.

You have to feel sorry for Newburyport.  What a killer schedule!  They have just finished playing Ipswich, Pentucket, and now Masconomet.  Next game (Thursday) they host Ipswich in a league game.  Ipswich and Pentucket are undefeated.  Masco is a Division One team that gave both of those teams a run for their money before losing to them.

Molly Rowe (Bentley) and Joe Clancy (Merrimack) were in the house.

Masco’s next game will be hosting Amesbury on Wednesday night.

Finding information on Cape Ann League teams is a serious challenge.  One helpful site is www.calscores.com.  There you’ll find schedules, scores, and standings.

Details about teams can be very illusive.  However, that is no longer true regarding the Lady Chieftains.  Click on this link and see what I mean.

Triton stuns Masco 46-45 on late 3’s by Paul Dacy

Paul Dacy of Triton shoots the game-winner over Brian Reardon in front of the Viking student section.

Paul Dacy of Triton shoots the game-winner over Brian Reardon in front of the Viking student section.

(Byfield)  What a game!

Senior Paul Dacy hit two 3’s in the final thirty-five seconds enabling Triton (4-2) to edge Masconomet, 46-45, before an excited home crowd on Friday night.

Celebration on the court began even before the final three had been posted on the scoreboard

Celebration on the court began even before the final three had been posted on the scoreboard

That crowd rushed the floor when Paul’s final shot went in and the buzzer sounded.

The Chieftains (1-6) led by seven (41-34) with four minutes left but four turnovers the rest of the way had plenty to do with the bad ending for them.  Two of the turnovers led directly to Viking layups by Zak Alaoui (20 points) and Sam McKenzie (4 points).

Another Masco miscue gave Triton the ball with one minute left.  Trailing by three (43-40), the Vikings passed and passed and, with few seconds on the shot clock, Paul Dacy was forced into a fall-away three.  The shot caromed off the backboard and in tying the score with thirty-five seconds left.

Jalen Aho put Masco ahead late in the game

Jalen Aho put Masco ahead late in the game

No timeout by Masco.  Point guard Jalen Aho controlled the ball throughout the Masco possession.  He dribbled one way and then the other looking to be intent on passing to anyone.  However, when the lane opened up the junior sailed in for a layup with 10.9 seconds left.

Triton took a timeout.  Coach Dave Clay said afterwards that the plan was to get to the basket.  Trailing by two it made sense.  But the Masco defense was tough.  Zak Alaoui attempted to drive from the left but the Chieftain defense collapsed to prevent it.  However, by preventing Zak from penetrating they gave him a chance to get the ball to Paul Dacy in the nearby corner.  Paul had a split second to let the shot fly from in front of the Triton student section. He also had defender Brian Reardon running at him but it didn’t matter as he canned the game-winner.

Why all the excitement at Triton?  The Vikings are coming off a 5-15 season and already have four wins in 2012-13.  An energetic student section is in place. They stood throughout the game offering plenty of encouragement before swarming the court after the final buzzer.

I chose to cover this game for two reasons: (1) to take a look at the suddenly successful Triton Vikings and see how they’re doing it, and (2) try to figure out what has gone wrong with a Masconomet team that was 14-7 in 2011-12.

Zak Alaoui (20 points)

Zak Alaoui (20 points)

The answer to the first is that this season’s Vikings play tight defense and are eager to run with turnovers.  They also can make shots from long range.

The answer to the second was not as clear with just one look.  I never saw Captain Chris Schleer.  He certainly would have made a difference.  It was obvious that Masco made far too many mistakes.  I had them for twenty-four turnovers including eight in the final quarter.

After Paul Dacy (11 points), the two standouts in this game were Triton’s Zak Alaoui and Masco’s Zach Turcotte.  Both players had twenty points.  Zak had a couple of three’s but most of his scoring came from breakaway layups set up by good defense.  6-6 Zach dominated the inside doing all of his scoring from in close.

Triton had a four-point lead (13-9) early in the second quarter but later on Masco got ahead on two inside scores by Tighe Van Lenten (7 points) and Ben Hinckley.  A three from the right corner by Zak Alaoui set up the halftime score at 18-18.

Masco led for most of the third quarter before three’s by Connor Barry (9 points) and Zak (off the rim and backboard) knotted things at 30-30.

Zach Turcotte (20 points)

Zach Turcotte (20 points)

Over the next 5+ minutes of playing time, stretching into the fourth quarter, the Chieftains put an 11-4 run together.  Two of the scores were on converted rebounds (Alberto Arenaza and Zach Turcotte).  Brian Reardon drained a three as the visitors looked to be pulling away.

But over the final four minutes, despite being down 41-34, the Vikings rallied and won a thriller at the buzzer.

Triton, now 3-1 in the Cape Ann League, visits North Reading on Monday night.  On the same night, Masco, now 0-4 in the CAL, will host Newburyport.  Coach L’Italien was on hand for the Triton/Masco game.

Late goal gets St. John’s Prep past Masconomet 2-1 in Division 1 North boys soccer semifinals

Eagles rush to celebrate D1 North semifinals win over top-seed Masconomet.

Keyon Olia (10) and Mike Ennis (8) make a late run

(Lynn) St. John’s Prep scored with just over four minutes left in regulation and defeated Masconomet, 2-1, in Division 1 North boys semifinals soccer on Friday afternoon/evening at Manning Field in Lynn.

Senior Bruce Ocko tallied the game-winner converting a loose ball in front of the Masco net assisted by Lev Kazelyan.

The Eagles will now face Somerville (19-0-2) at Manning Field on Sunday at noon for the D1 North title.

Top-seed Masco (18-1-2) had not lost a game since last November’s, 2-1, D1 state title setback to Ludlow.

#4 seed St. John’s (17-1-2) had the speed to match Masco and the upper hand in total corner kicks, direct kicks, and offensive end throw-ins.  (I don’t believe that the Cape Ann League champs had seen the kind of pressure the Eagles put on during their twenty-game unbeaten streak.)

Adam Grammer (7) shoots over Eagle GK Ben Alpern

The Chieftains came close to getting more goals a couple of times: Jack Heintzelman hit the crossbar near the end of the first half and Adam Grammer sped in on the left and narrowly missed wide right halfway into the second half.

Junior Matt Chilton set up teammate Nate Schmidt for the first Eagle score at 20:44.  Matt broke open down the left sidelines and had time to look up, sight Nate surging down the middle, and get a pass to Nate that he could head into the net to GK Derek Grammer’s left.

It wasn’t a minute later that Masco responded with a goal to tie the game.  The goal was off of a Chip Sherman corner kick. Chip’s kick resulted in a loose ball in front and Jack Heintzelman drove it home.

As the rest of the half was played out and much of the second half went by, I suspected that this game would require overtime.  But St. John’s had the better chances and made one pay off avoiding overtime.

Very impressed with senior Bruce Ocko.  Not just because he scored the winning goal.  Most of the game he was part of the last line of Eagle defense.  He also launched several direct kicks and throw-ins into the scoring area in front of the Masco net.

Chip Sherman goes down but does not draw a penalty.

Last look at Masco’s Chip Sherman.  The senior has been recruited by division one Sienna.  Last year I saw Chip draw a penalty in a tourney game at Manning Field and then collect the PK for the game winner.  Chip tried to draw a penalty kick late in this game but the referee treated Chip’s effort as a dive and ignored it.

Tough loss for the Chieftains who surely hoped for another chance at a D1 state title.  With eleven prominent seniors on the 2012 squad, it may be a while before they’ll challenge again.  But we shall see on that one.

Masco had given up just four goals all season.  To see them give up two in one game was a big surprise.

St. John’s Prep has won the Catholic Conference three straight years.

Manning Field is a terrific venue for soccer.  Plenty of seats and parking.  Great sightlines.  Nice turf surface.

Top-seed Masco gets easy win over East Boston, 3-0, in North Division 1 boys soccer quarterfinals

Keyon Olia (10) set up nicely by Chip Sherman for first Masco goal.

Chip Sherman (he had two assists) heads toward the Jets goal.

(Topsfield)  Now let’s get down to some serious soccer!

#1 seed Masconomet made easy work of the visiting East Boston Jets, 3-0, on a sunny Tuesday afternoon and moved on to a Thursday night matchup with #3 seed St. John’s Prep.

That Division 1 North semifinal contest (7:30PM at Manning Field in Lynn) on Thursday should be special.  The Prep is 16-1-2 (only loss to Weymouth on September 29th) and rated 3rd in the Boston Globe Top 20 teams. Masco (18-0-2) is rated #1 by the Globe.  The Chieftains last loss was in the Division 1 state finals to Ludlow.

But you’re reading this to find out about the Eastie/Masco game………sorry for the digression.

The Chieftains got a quick start in this Division 1 quarterfinal match by scoring (Keyon Olia) in the first 1 ½ minutes. The home team went on to kept the pressure on the #9 seed most of the game.

Chip Sherman earned the assist on the first goal with a terrific pass from the right into the middle where Keyon had time to line up a hard shot.

The Jets had a few shots toward Masco GK John Black but they were either long direct kicks or grounders.

Masco, on the other hand, came close often in both halves.  Their willingness to pass the ball, even when they were in close, set up countless near-misses from the front of the Eastie net.

Freshman goalie Edwin Avelar robbed Alex Gikas from point blank in front early in the second half.

Colby Farmer drills the second Chieftain goal.

One save that Edwin couldn’t make was off a shot from just inside the box by Masco’s Colby Farmer late in the first half.  Edwin had a very good look at the shot coming in, but at the last second teammate Eddy Umanzor slide across in front of him and deflected Colby’s shot inside the near post.  This gave the home team a 2-0 lead.

Chip Sherman earned his second assist in the second half on Goal #3.  Masco’s Max Craig was taken down near the box and Chip took the direct kick that resulted.  Instead of blasting a shot toward the goal, the Cape League Player of the Year fed teammate Adam Grammer all alone in close.  Adam had time to fake at least one shot before netting a score with seven minutes left.

Edwin Avelar makes a save for East Boston.

Despite the loss, Eastie displayed some impressive dribbling skills. They forced a lot of defensive misses going east to west.  Going north to south was much harder.  Masco’s fresh legs (they substituted frequently) gave Eastie few runs of any length.

Masconomet looked awfully good in this one.  Their positioning prevented East Boston from putting consecutive passes together.  And the Masco passing helped them buy control-time no matter what part of the field they were in.

Let’s see how they do against a very good St. John’s team.

I never can quite understand why schools don’t make rosters available especially during tournament games.  I ended up getting the Eastie roster from their coach.  I got the Masco roster because the parent of a player was willing to go across the field at halftime to get it for me.  (Thanks, by the way!)

A good crowd of Masco supporters attended.

I wonder if we’ll remember the result of this game or the Presidential election result longer.

Masco defeats Newburyport 2-1 in girls soccer denying Clippers CAL title

Lexi Sheehan of Masco puts her foot into the game-winner.

Kaleigh White, Claudia Marsh (22), and Lexi Sheehan celebrate the first Chieftain goal.

(Topsfield) Neither team needed the game to qualify for the state tournament but visiting Newburyport was playing for a share of the Cape Ann League Division 1 title.

Masconomet (11-3-1) played the spoiler role defeating the Clippers, 2-1, on a sunny Thursday afternoon in their final home game of the regular season.

Newburyport (12-2-2) entered the game sharing the top spot with Hamilton-Wenham.  But the Newburyport loss combined with HW’s win over Pentucket (5-0) gave the CAL D1 title to the Generals with a 13-1-2 record.

Surprisingly, this game went from a lengthy defensive struggle to a shootout in the final six minutes.

With six minutes left, Claudia Marsh set up teammate Lexi Sheehan for a header for Masco’s first goal. Four minutes later Lexi Sheehan was back for a second goal after dribbling down the middle and blasting a shot past NHS goalie Lilly Donovan to her left.

Newburyport came right back with a top-shelf goal by Jaycie Triantafillou a minute later, in the last minute of the game, but the Clippers didn‘t have time to threaten to tie the game.

first half scramble in Masconomet end

Masco and Newburyport had played to a 1-1 tie on September 25th and after watching sixty minutes of scoreless play in this game I suspected that a 0-0 tie was a strong possibility.

Both teams had returning CAL award-winners on defense.  No question that Paige Pratt (Masco) and Aly Leahy (Newburyport) play the last-defender position extremely well.  So there were shots in the first sixty minutes but mostly long range tries.

Katie Gorenflo did get in for a close one seventeen minutes into the second half but Masco goalie Nancy Palermo was able to smother the attempt.

The one that will haunt the Clippers, when they recall this game, was a shot by Jaycie Triandofilou twenty-five minutes into the second half.  Jaycie struck a hard shot that hit the crossbar and went straight down in front.  Masco was somehow able to clear the rebound and keep the visitors off the board.

The key to the Chieftains first goal was the sideline run by senior Claudia Marsh.  She was able to get space and send a hard shot toward the front of the net.  NHS goalie Lilly Donovan was set up close to the goal-line protecting for a shot directly on net.  When the shot/pass was sent out away from the goal-line, Claudia’s teammate (Lexi Sheehan) was able to move in and head it past Lilly before she could get out to catch it.

Now down by a goal and only six minutes left, the Clippers quickly put a couple of shots on MHS goalie Nancy Palermo moving more players into the offensive end.

However, when the Chieftains were able to get control, they set out on a long run toward the NHS goal.  Lexi Sheehan covered a lot of ground down the middle and was able to get away a clear shot from in close for the game winner with two minutes left.

Jaycie came back with a quick answer but it was too little too late.

Newburyport finishes its regular season on Monday (weather permitting?) against Tewksbury at home.  Masco finishes tomorrow at North Reading.

Both Masco and Newburyport are tireless.  There were many long runs in this game.

Paige Pratt (16) sets to take a direct kick.

One aspect that needs work on both teams are direct kicks.  There were at least sixteen taken, by my unofficial count, during the game and not one of them turned into any kind of threat.  Way too many of them missed the goal entirely and some of the kicks were taken from very close range.  Maybe I was spoiled by watching Hannah Martin kick them in recent years for Newburyport.

Missing for Newburyport (as she has been all season) was Carly Brand.  The junior was injured in March and has just been cleared to practice.  She was on the Clipper bench for this one.

The last time I was at the Masco soccer field (last year) the Chieftain boys defeated Lincoln-Sudbury in a tournament shootout prompting one of the most dangerous student stampedes I’ve seen.

There were three soccer games going on at the same time.  I saw a few JV soccer balls escape onto the varsity field but no confusion resulted.

There was a scoreboard at Masco………but it didn’t work.

The sun was tough down one end for Lilly Donovan in the first half and for Nancy Palermo for part of the second half.  The sun, however, was not a factor in any of the goals.

Masconomet defeats Newburyport (9-6) in nine innings in softball

Lauren Singer tagged out at third by Julia OReilly.

Rachel Shamon pitched nine innings and had three RBI

(Newburyport)  A lot of, “Where have you been’s,” were probably heard after the Masco/Newburyport softball game at Cashman Park on Friday afternoon.

Why?  Those on hand saw nine innings and thirty hits (fifteen apiece) before Masconomet (4-0) defeated Newburyport, 9-6, and some of those attending may have gotten home a little late for supper.

The Clippers (1-2) tied the score in the sixth on a Lauren Singer RBI single and had promising opportunities in the seventh and eighth to get a walk-off win.

Masco pitcher Rachel Shamon, however, escaped a 2-on situation in the 7th by getting Molly Rowe to ground out.  In the 8th, Carley Siemasko led off with a single and reached second on a wild pitch but Rachel got Lea Tomasz to fly to right to end that threat.

Maddie Stanton – three hits and two RBI

The Chieftains won this game with three runs in the ninth.  Rachel Shamon drilled a shot to center that brought home two of the runs.  Later, Alexandra Mendelsohn would deliver the third run with a single to right.

That was more than enough runs for Rachel to work with in the bottom of the ninth.  She gave up a hit to Beth Castantini to lead off the inning but retired the next three batters in order to end the game.

Rachel (junior) ended up with three RBI and five strikeouts.

Masco took a 1-0 lead in the second when Shannon Beaton’s bloop single over the drawn in Clipper infield scored Alexandra Mendelsohn.

Vicki Allman came across in the second for Newburyport on Kendra Dow’s single to right to tie the score.

RBI’s by Molli Marshall and Rachel Shamon put Masco in front 3-1 after 2 ½ innings but the Clippers came right back with three runs of their own to get ahead, 4-3.  Lauren Singer drove in the first of the three runs with a single past first and later Maddie Stanton’s single up the middle brought in two more.

The Clippers handed out two gifts in the fourth.  After Julia O’Reilly reached on an infield single, Shannon Beaton dropped down a bunt.  The Clippers tried to get the runner going to second.  The throw was wild and by the time Newburyport recovered, Julia had scored and Shannon was on third.  So instead of an out and a runner on, Masco had a run in and a runner on third.  A wild pitch enabled Shannon to score Masco’s third run of the inning and sixth run of the game.

Carley Siemasko nailed at third.

In the bottom of the fourth, Newburyport ran into an out.  Molly Rowe reached on an infield single.  Carley Siemasko hit a long triple scoring Molly but was picked off after putting on the brakes too far beyond third.  As luck would have it, two batters later Lauren Singer hit a single that would have scored Carley. The Clippers had to settle for only one run in that inning but they had tied the score at five.

Masco went ahead once more in the fifth as Julia O’Reilly’s sacrifice fly scored Alexandra Mendelsohn.

Newburyport would rally to tie the game in the 6th and have chances to end it in the 7th and 8th.  Masco, however, held on and put this one away in the ninth.

Shortstop Taylor Evans had three hits for Masco and made several strong throws in the field.

Freshman Lauren Singer and Senior Maddie Stanton each had three hits for Newburyport.  Lauren took a ball on the thigh (she’s the catcher) that was painful.

Beth Castantini pitched the first five for the Clippers and Molly Rowe the last four.

Shortstop Kendra Dow made a complete recovery in the field from the adventure she had against North Reading.

Brooke Stewart (27 points) leads Masconomet past Newburyport (60-49) in girls basketball

Brooke Stewart (27 points) fires up a long one.

Brooke Stewart drives the lane

(Newburyport) Brooke Stewart is going to Division One William & Mary next year on a basketball scholarship.

Those on hand at Newburyport last night saw why, as she tortured the Clippers with twenty-seven points leading Masco to a 60-49 win in Cape Ann League action.

This was my third look at Brooke.  The other two times were against Pentucket, both losses.  In those games Brooke faced total denial defense and had limited opportunities to do damage.

Against Newburyport, she had the ball plenty and had all the shots working.  Brooke hit four 3’s and had numerous slashes to the basket.  Defending her was simply a nightmare.

Lilly Donovan (14 points) open in the lane

Newburyport (11-4 overall / 6-1 CAL) had won eight straight, and despite Brooke’s heroics only trailed by three (46-43) a minute into the final quarter.

But a minute later, a Brooke layup followed by a three from Chelsea Nason (assisted by Danielle Davis) and Masco shot up by eight (51-43) and the Clippers couldn’t get closer than six the rest of the way.

A big part of the Chieftain success was limiting Newburyport’s top scorer, Beth Castantini, to four points all late in the game.  Foul trouble and facing Brooke as defender made for a long night for the talented senior.

The Clippers went down ten (18-8) in the first quarter but rallied all the way back with five each from Lilly Donovan and Molly Rowe.

Newburyport was again down ten (31-21) in the second quarter and answered with nine straight (Molly Rowe-3, Lea Tomasz-2, Lilly Donovan-4) to get within one (32-31) with five minutes left in the third quarter.

Thanks to Brooke (sixteen points over the final thirteen minutes) Newburyport never caught up the rest of the way.
The eleven-point spread (60-49) at the end was an inaccurate indicator of the difference between the two teams.

Masco (11-2 overall / 7-1 CAL) has now won eight of their last nine games and will be at Triton on Tuesday.

Masco made seven 3’s.  The Clippers lone three was a Molly Rowe (11 points) buzzer beater at the end of the first quarter.

Molly Rowe came out of this scramble with a back injury.

Molly was injured (back) in a scramble midway through the last quarter and never returned.

Sophomore Lilly Donovan ended up chasing Brooke around most of the game yet still had enough energy to put up a team-leading fourteen points.

Chelsea Nason and Danielle Davis each had ten points for the Chieftains.

Both teams have qualified for post-season play.  Masco is in Division 1 and Newburyport in Division 3.

The two referees arrived late for the second half.  I trust that they did not assume that the cheer they received upon arrival was affectionate.
