(North Reading MA)  This was a surprise.

North Reading (5-1) dominated Amesbury to the tune of 7-0 with terrific pitching (Julia Perrone) and nonstop hitting on Monday afternoon in Cape Ann League action.

This was the first loss for the Indians (5-1).  The shutout was a real surprise since Amesbury had rattled five opponents with forty-five runs before running into NR junior Julia Perrone.

The Hornets’ righty allowed only four singles and struck out seven Indians.  Julia ended the 2nd and 3rd innings with K’s after the visitors had runners in scoring position in each of them.

It was easy to miss the Hornets excellent pitching with all the hitting they did.  The word “squibber” would not describe any of those hits.  NR hit the fence on a line, hit one over the fence (Tara Driver), and had four doubles.

The only starter without a hit was leadoff batter Carly Swartz but Carly’s terrific defense at second more than made up for her not getting a hit.

Senior Lily Malloy drove in NR’s first two runs with a single in the second and a double to center in the third.

It was a very busy afternoon in the Amesbury outfield

North Reading would get two more runs in the fifth inning on sophomore Guiliana Peppe’s two-out, bases-loaded double to left field.

The Hornets carried that 4-0 lead into the sixth.  After two quick outs, Abby Paine singled.  3B Emily Robinson handled the grounder of next batter Julia Perrone okay but looked first to second and then threw wildly to first allowing Julia to reach and extend the inning.  That was unfortunate for Amesbury because next batter Tara Driver lofted a high fly to right that cleared the fence for a 3-run homer.

Pitcher Julia Perrone throws to first as teammate Cassidy looks on

This was Tara’s fifth home run of the season.

Starter Julia Perrone now has 46 strikeouts over 37 innings.

Amesbury starter Hayley Catania had three strikeouts but as the thirteen hits would indicate was not missing many bats on this afternoon.

With both teams in Division 2 you can almost be certain that to get where they want to get in the post-season they have a good chance of meeting again.

The Indians had defeated North Reading three straight years by one run each time.  I was expecting a close game but NR on this afternoon would have none of that.

Julia Perrone, Cassidy Gaetta, Cassandra Pascucci, and Guiliana Peppe each had two hits for North Reading.

Lauren Fedorchak, Hayley Catania, Adrienne Harris, and Chloe Kramer singled for Amesbury.

Next game for North Reading is on the road Wednesday versus Ipwich.

Amesbury’s next game is hosting Masco on Friday.

North Reading defeats Triton 41-31 to gain share of CAL Kinney Division title

(Byfield MA) North Reading is not going to have any problem with sharing.

The Hornets (18-2) rode Jess Lezon’s nineteen points to defeat Triton, 41-31, on Wednesday night. The win gives NR a share of the Cape Ann League Kinney Division title with Pentucket.

The Hornets haven’t had a CAL girls’ basketball title, shared or unshared, since 1993!

But the drought is over and NR now can get ready for the Division 3 tournament. The MIAA bracket will be released on Friday.

Triton (10-10) sealed their ride to the Division 2 tourney with a recent win over Everett.

The visitors took the lead for good (5-4) just three minutes into the game on a three by senior Julia McDonald.

Jess Lezon (6’5”) drew plenty of Vikings defenders wherever she was. The Yale commit dominated the second quarter with eleven points getting terrific feeds from teammates. North Reading led 28-15 at halftime.

Junior Tessa Lafrance had thirteen points and defended Jess Lezon. Her problem? Foul trouble. If there is such a thing as a foul magnet, Tessa was it. Triton coach Dan Boyle was forced to keep the 6’ junior on the bench for half of the second quarter and didn’t start her in the 3rd quarter. Tough place to have your top scorer and your best defensive matchup against Jess Lezon.

The Vikings were able to chop some points off the NR halftime advantage in the second half. After an Erin Savage three, Triton got as close as they would get, 36-29, with three minutes left.

A couple of things that caught my eye in this game were: Triton played some serious defense, and North Reading did not force the ball inside but passed into open shots on the perimeter.

The Vikings constantly applied pressure and were quick enough to be able to take chances and recover defensively. They jumped passing/dribbling lanes and forced thirteen turnovers by my count.

North Reading wasn’t shy about taking three’s, especially wide open ones. And there were quite a few available because Triton did everything they could to deny passes inside. One thing that worked several times for NR was quick breakouts. Several times when the break didn’t produce a good shot they were able to hit Jess Lezon rolling down the lane.

Triton seniors honored before their last home game

Triton seniors honored before their last home game

Triton seniors (Morgan Snow, Hannah Clark, Jessica Greaney, and Abby Ostrander) were honored before the game.

The Hornets have won five straight and sixteen of their last seventeen. They could be the top seed in the Division 3 North.

NR’s two losses were against Pentucket and Newburyport. Both of those teams are in Division 2.

Pentucket coach John McNamara was in the house.

Last time I saw the North Reading girls in action was at Manning Field in Lynn when they won the Division 3 North soccer title.

Two weeks ago North Reading defeated Triton, 51-36, at home. Jess had twenty in that game while Carly Swartz had seventeen.

Jess scored her 1000th point on February 11th.

Morgan Snow on the move

The Hornets are now a man-to-man team. They have nine seniors on their roster.

Being courtside I catch things that are said on the court. I also get a glimpse of facial reactions. At one point Jess Lezon was covering Mel Primpas. The height discrepancy was very noticeable. Hannah Clark had the ball on the wing and Mel backed down on the block with Jess behind her. Hannah saw the mismatch and smiled.

(Byfield MA) North Reading (15-1) withstood Triton’s 30-point final quarter in edging the Vikings, 79-75, on Tuesday night in Cape Ann League action.

The Hornets had a sixteen-point lead (63-47) one minute into the final quarter and had just put twenty-four points together in the third quarter. Their lead looked comfortable.

But less than two minutes later Adam Baletsa (17 points) put new meaning to the word “hot” when it comes to shooting. The Vikings senior drained four 3’s during this sizzling segment. Combined with teammate Will Parsons, who had a three of his own, Triton long-shot its way to trailing only 64-62.

Four different times the rest of the way Triton was within two. In the last minute the home team was within one (74-73) and had the ball but on this night the shot to tie, or go ahead, never clicked.

Key player for North Reading? Easily it was senior Adam Goldstein (28 points). He was huge in the last minute. Clinging to a one-point lead in that final minute the Hornets passed around the perimeter before Justin Dorosh set up Adam for a straightaway long one. Swish! Now up by four. Eric Rybicki got in for a layup and Triton was within two points with fifteen seconds left. Adam was quickly fouled and calmly sank both free throws and the lead was back to four. Triton missed two shots on their final possession and NR had the win.

Tough loss for the Vikings (8-9). They have now dropped five of their last six.

They will get another chance against North Reading in two weeks at North Reading.

John McCarthy (19 points) drove whenever he saw an opening

John McCarthy (19 points) drove whenever he saw an opening

The steady flow of accurate 3-pointers at the start of the final quarter was followed by a run of points (eleven) by hard-driving John McCarthy (19 points). With North Reading limiting space to Triton’s 3-point threats on the perimeter, room opened up for John. He was either fouled or made a layup in possession after possession to keep Triton within range of the lead down the stretch.

Both defenses applied plenty of pressure but the turnovers (14 for Triton, 12 for North Reading) offset each other.

NR caught Triton not getting back on defense a number of times for easy shots. There also were several instances where the Hornets had wide open 3-pointers. Two of Adam Goldstein’s three’s were uncontested. That is what you call living dangerously on defense!

I am not a big fan of the 3-point shot but after seeing the way Triton used it to stay with the top team in the CAL I better understand why coaches encourage it.

Adam Goldstein sank two clutch free throws in the final seconds

Adam Goldstein sank two clutch free throws in the final seconds

Adam Goldstein not only scored 28 points but he also rebounded well and blocked several shots.

Not playing for NR was Anthony Eldridge. The junior dislocated his shoulder in January.

The Hornets took the lead for good in the second period. The visitors broke away from a 26-26 tie as Adam Goldstein scored nine unanswered points: a free throw, a layup, and two 3-pointers.

The NR lead reached eighteen (58-40) in the last two minutes of the third quarter.

In the midst of a timeout late in the game after Triton moved to within one possession of the lead, NR coach Joe Casey was heard to say, “You’re the best team in the league, settle in and play like it.”

North Reading won 60-56 at Triton a year ago.

The Hornets only loss this season has been to Masco. The Chieftains took them to overtime in their first meeting.

The last time I saw a North Reading team play was in the Division 3 North girls soccer finals against Bishop Fenwick at Manning Field in Lynn. Happy day for the NR girls.

Next game for Triton is Thursday at Pentucket. North Reading hosts one of their biggest rivals (Lynnfield) on the same evening.

(Lynn MA) Sophomore Rachel Hill scored a goal in the first half and assisted on the game-winner in the second half as North Reading defeated #2 Bishop Fenwick, 2-1, to win the Division 3 North title on Sunday afternoon at Manning Field in Lynn.

The #5 Hornets (17-3-2) will face D3 South winner Medway (17-1-3) on Wednesday night (5PM) in the D3 state semi-finals at Manning Field. Medway was the #1 seed in the South.

The NR win avenges a 1-0 loss they suffered against the team from Peabody in late October.

Rachel Hill (#12 on the ground) sends a grounder past GK Merry Harrington into the net

Rachel Hill’s goal came very late in the first half. After getting a pass from Marissa Zarella, Rachel dribbled across the middle of the box from right to left. GK Merry Harrington moved over to cover and Rachel, as she was going down, hit a grounder past her. Rachel’s roller reached the far corner of the goal with less than two minutes to play in the half.

At 31:04 of the second half the Crusaders evened things. Seniors Colleen Corcoran and Danielle DelTorto combined nicely on the score. Danielle carried down the left side and sent Colleen a delicious cross into the box. Colleen got a straight-on blast off the sailed over GK Kat Hassapis’ head.

The Corcoran/DelTorto connection tallied the only goal in the Fenwick win over North Reading in the regular season.nrbf-A6-Haley-Nathan-Goal-#1nrbf-A7-Haley-Nathan-Goal-#2

NRbf-A8-Haley-Nathan-#3Sixteen minutes later (15:36) North Reading put in the goal that keeps their season going. Rachel Hill sent junior Haley Nathan ahead along the left side. Haley had defender Emily Charette to her right. GK Merry Harrington moved over and out to protect the net. Haley was able to get off a shot that went by Merry and rolled into the goal.

Katie Welch and Colleen Corcoran

Both of the NR goals were on the ground with a lot less than lightning speed on the shots. It isn’t always the hardest hit shot that gets the job done, at least not in this game.

Colleen Corcoran hit a crossbar in the first half. Katie Welch had a near-miss for the Hornets from long range in the second half.

(Topsfield MA) The Manchester-Essex girls and the Masconomet boys came out winners at the Cape Ann League cross country championships held Saturday at Bradley Palmer State Park.

Maddie Quigley (Triton) and Joe Molvar (Newburyport) were the top finishers in each division.

The ME girls edged arch-rival Hamilton-Wenham in several head-to-head races within the race to get the title, 40-50. During the regular season HW got by ME by a one slim point to keep their dual-meet streak (129 straight) alive.

The Masco boys had too much depth for the rest of the CAL field. Newburyport took the top two spots (Joe Molvar and Jack Carleo) but the Chieftains still won, 60-73. Masco’s Daniel Cosgrove finished third.

Senior Maddie Quigley was behind fast-starting Emily DeMarco (Ipswich) for part of the race but had a good lead over Eve Feuerbach (ME) at the finish. Maddie finished 7th in 2014.

Senior Joe Molvar trailed teammate Jack Carleo for part of the boys’ race but also ended up with a commanding lead over his Clippers’ teammate at the end.

(Byfield MA) North Reading survived four lead changes in the final quarter and defeated Triton, 60-56, on Wednesday night Cape Ann League action.

The Hornets (7-8) had a very slim, 55-54 lead with 1:12 left but capitalized on a Viking rebounding foul (Luke Reineiger) and a converted offensive rebound (Adam Goldstein) and put five straight points together to win the game.

Triton (7-9) got down early (22-9) as Derek Hogan (18 points) carried North Reading.

Later the Vikings would erase a 30-20 deficit with a 17-1 run that gave the home team a 37-31 lead with three minutes left in the third quarter. Nick Venora (19 points) tallied nine points in a lengthy stretch of solid offense and defense.

Cam Armand spins in

Cam Armand spins in

Cam Armand started the final quarter with a three to get Triton up by four (44-40).

The key to the North Reading win? Twice in the last quarter the Hornets turned misses into point-producing offensive rebounds. The first time it happened senior Gerard Walsh punished Triton with a three after a teammate rebounded Gerard’s missed free throw to get NR ahead, 52-48. Later it was Adam Goldstein (12 points) converting a missed free throw into two points with a rebound to increase the Hornets’ lead to 58-54 with fifty-four seconds to go.

The Vikings opted for the quick fix 3-point attempts but came up empty on all three tries down the stretch.

Derek Hogan (18 points) drives

North Reading won despite twenty turnovers and thirteen (10-for-23) missed free throws. The Hornets miscued on eight freebies in the final quarter.

The Vikings had a very cold shooting night from the field. They did make four 3’s but needed several more in this one.

North Reading won the first match between the two teams in December, 62-40. Adam Goldstein had 21 points in that NR victory.

The Hornets ended a two-game losing streak. They play Notre Dame Cristo Rey (Lawrence) on Thursday and at undefeated Hamilton-Wenham on Friday.

Hamilton-Wenham routed Triton by thirty-nine points on Friday. Marcus Zegarowski had thirty-one points in that one. HW had only won the previous meeting between the two teams, 51-44, in December.

The Vikings will be at Masco on Friday night.

(Topsfield MA) For 2 1/2 innings Masconomet looked like anything but a softball team on a twelve game winning streak.

The rest of the way?  The Division 1 Chieftains (17-2) overcame a five-run deficit and overtook Division 2 North Reading, 7-6, with two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning on a sunny Wednesday afternoon.

The Hornets (14-5) carried a 6-5 lead into the top of the seventh inning and were in an excellent position to pad their lead as they loaded the bases with one out.  But Masco’s complete game winner, Emily Dow, struck out Emma Santosuosso and got Bryanne Riley to fly out keeping NR off the scoreboard.

Masconomet celebration begins

Masconomet celebration begins

Now Masco needed a run to tie and another run to win.  They got both.  Emily Dow hit a two-strike single on the ground up the middle.  Tayla Murray ran for her.  Jordyn doubled sending her sister to third with one out.  Second baseman Carly Swartz opted to come home with Kylie Currier’s grounder but Tayla Murray slid home safely to tie the score.  Her sister (Jordyn) reached third on the play.  A fly to center wasn’t deep enough so Jordan held at third with two out.  Jordyn did get home standing up on a Kendra Butner pitch in the dirt, that eluded NR catcher Sophia Warner, to give the Chieftains the win.

The victory gives Masco the Cape Ann League Kinney Division title.

I came away impressed with the Chieftains’ hitting.  They collected thirteen hits and everyone in the lineup had at least one of those hits.  Eight of the hits came in the final three innings.

Junior Sophia Warren was a perfect four-for-four.  She also scored a run and had an RBI for North Reading.

Kendra Butner launched a no-doubter over the fence in left in the NR fourth.

The Hornets did get five runs in the first three innings but they also stranded five runners.  Once the Masco bats came to life those stranded NR runners became very important.

Julianna Kostas paced Masco with two RBI.  Maddie Kelly, Alex Mendelsohn, Emily Dow, and Kylie Currier had one RBI apiece.

Errors by shortstop Casey Maidment (fielding) and rightfielder Jordyn Murray (throwing) gave NR two unearned runs in the first inning.

The last Masco loss?  6-5 in nine innings at North Reading.  The Hornets scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to send that April game into extra innings.

The other Masco loss?  4-1 to Newburyport in the season opener.

This was the fourth one-run loss for North Reading in the Cape Ann League.  The other one-run winners?  Amesbury, Lynnfield, and Pentucket

A young Masco fan was hit by a hot grounder.  Two North Reading players were quick to bring ice packs.  Somewhere they learned that there is more to life than softball.

A key to the Masco win was limiting 2013 CAL All-League Tarah Reilly to just one hit.  As shortstop, Tarah made a sure-handed play to end the sixth inning preserving NR’s one-run lead.

Maddie Kelly (2013 CAL All-Star) had a double, triple and scored a run.

Weather?  Perfect with plenty of sunshine.

(Newburyport) Newburyport and North Reading opened their 2014 baseball seasons today……….sort of.

The Clippers and the Hornets played nine innings with a winner undecided.  They will resume the 2-2 game at a later date.

This was a Cape Ann League contest with plenty of baserunners and plenty of scoring opportunities.  The biggest lack was a big hit and therefore special credit goes to the pitching.  James Nutter (Clippers) went seven innings and Scott Allan (Hornets) went eight.  Mike Jayne finished for the Clipppers and Ryan Boucher for the Hornets.

Newburyport collected two runs in the first and were blanked the rest of the way.  North Reading put up single runs in the 4th and 6th.

Keith Linnane scores the first NR run

The visiting Hornets collected ten hits (two each for Scott Meija, Ryan Boucher, and Scott Allan) and stranded at least one runner in every inning.

The Clippers had nine hits (two each for Chance Carpenter and Caleb Stott) and stranded seven.

Newburyport picked up their only runs in the first inning.  Chance Carpenter had a bunt single and Caleb Stott followed with a hit to right center.  Both runners advanced on a wild pickoff attempt at second by pitcher Scott Allan.  Ryan Furlong flared a two-out double to left scoring both teammates.

North Reading got a run back in the 4th inning.  Keith Linnane singled to center, took second (no throw), and reached third on a wild pitch.  Ryan Boucher doubled the Hornets catcher home.

Ryan Furlong drove in both Newburyport runs

Ryan Furlong drove in both Newburyport runs

The Hornets got a gift run in the sixth inning.  Ryan Sanborn was hit by a pitch and then stole second with two outs.  Scott Allan singled to right but a quick relay back to Travis Wile put Ryan Sanborn in big trouble.  Ryan had rounded third with the original intent of going home.  Halfway down the line he chose to head back to third.  However, Travis’s throw sailed over third baseman Caleb Stott’s head allowing Ryan to recover and tally the tying run.

Two terrific defensive plays saved North Reading.  In the Clippers’ fourth they got runners (Ben Ventura and Ryan Furlong) on second and third with no outs.  NR had the infield in when Travis Wile lined a rope up the middle.  Second baseman Shane Driscoll made a diving catch and then tossed to shortstop Blake Tamlyn-Hayden for the double play.

Newburyport threatened in the sixth inning.  A Caleb Stott double and an error (first baseman Ryan Sanborn) put runners on first and third with two outs.  Pitcher Scott Allan launched a pitch (to Travis Wile) wide and in the dirt that catcher Keith Linnane somehow stopped preventing a run.

The Clippers had two-out singles in the 9th by Travis O’Brien and Tom Isabel but Hornets’ centerfielder Colby Maiola (going to Assumption) nailed Travis trying to get to third on his teammate’s hit ending the inning.

Leftfielder Leighton Paradis made several running catches on flies hit by Colby Maiola.

The last time North Reading and Newburyport met was on June 4th at North Reading when the Clippers upset the Hornets (4-0) in the first round of the Division 3 North playoffs.  Colby Morris handcuffed NR that afternoon.  North Reading had beaten Newburyport twice during the regular season.

(North Reading) Newburyport lost twice to North Reading during the regular season but it didn’t matter as the Clippers upset the #1 seed Hornets, 4-0, in the Division 3 North quarterfinals at North Reading on a sunny Tuesday afternoon.

Newburyport (15-7) scored two unearned runs in the fourth and two insurance runs in the sixth and, combined with the shutout pitching of Colby Morris (6 hits/5 K’s), had enough to stun the D3 defending champions.

The # 8 seed Clippers have now won eight straight and return to action tomorrow (Wednesday) at Fraser Field in Lynn (4PM) to face Whittier in the D3 North semi-finals.

The last time Newburyport played at Fraser Field was when they won the Division 3 state title in June of 2011.

Ryan McAuliffe took the loss for the Hornets.  Ryan had defeated Newburyport, 9-1,  on April 17th striking out fifteen Clippers in a special victory that was Coach Frank Carey’s 700th win.  This time around Ryan registered eight strikeouts but surrendered eight hits including a triple (Ian Michaels) and two doubles (Colton Fontaine and Scott Webster).

Winning pitcher Colby Morris struck out five while allowing six hits.  The key for Colby was keeping the ball down as he limited NR to two flyball outs.

The unearned runs (4th inning) came after both Colby Morris and Connor Wiles singled with one out.  First baseman Mike Brandano tried for a force at second, after fielding Connor MacRae’s grounder, but threw wide left of shortstop Ryley Warnock allowing Colby Morris to score.  Later shortstop Ryley Warnock took a chance at getting Scott Webster on a slow roller and his throw went past Mike Brandano enabling Connor Wiles to come home with the second Clippers run.

The 2-0 lead grew to 4-0 in the sixth inning.  Connor MacRae reached on a fielder’s choice with two outs.  Ian Michaels, who had struck out twice previously against Ryan McAuliffe, blasted a high 2-strike pitch over Dennis Rollfs’ head in left field for a triple scoring Connor MacRae.  Next batter, freshman Scott Webster, singled to left bringing Ian Michaels home.

The Hornets put two on with two out in the bottom of the sixth but Eric Gordon grounded out to second to end that threat.

In the bottom of the seventh, Shane Driscoll singled to lead off.  However, Colby Morris struck out Ryan Sanborn looking and got Dennis Rolffs to ground into a 6-3 double play to end it.

NR had two on and two out in the third inning.  However, Colby Maiola’s hard shot down the first baseline was snared by Travis Wile.

Newburyport tried a suicide squeeze in third inning but the bunt didn’t happen.  Scott Webster, however, found a way to get back to third.

North Reading caught Colton Fontaine (he had doubled) in a rundown in the first inning.

An interference call on Hornets baserunner Dennis Rollfs turned a force-out at second into an inning-ending double play in the NR fifth.

The Clippers loaded the bases in the seventh inning but Ryan McAuliffe whiffed Connor Wile and got Connor MacRae to fly to centerfield.

North Reading was 22-4 in 2012.  This season ends for them at 19-3.  Coach Frank Carey’s career record now stands at 716-273.

Scott Webster had three hits for Newburyport and drove in a run.

Dennis Rollfs led NR with two hits.
