(Topsfield MA) The Manchester-Essex girls and the Masconomet boys came out winners at the Cape Ann League cross country championships held Saturday at Bradley Palmer State Park.

Maddie Quigley (Triton) and Joe Molvar (Newburyport) were the top finishers in each division.

The ME girls edged arch-rival Hamilton-Wenham in several head-to-head races within the race to get the title, 40-50. During the regular season HW got by ME by a one slim point to keep their dual-meet streak (129 straight) alive.

The Masco boys had too much depth for the rest of the CAL field. Newburyport took the top two spots (Joe Molvar and Jack Carleo) but the Chieftains still won, 60-73. Masco’s Daniel Cosgrove finished third.

Senior Maddie Quigley was behind fast-starting Emily DeMarco (Ipswich) for part of the race but had a good lead over Eve Feuerbach (ME) at the finish. Maddie finished 7th in 2014.

Senior Joe Molvar trailed teammate Jack Carleo for part of the boys’ race but also ended up with a commanding lead over his Clippers’ teammate at the end.

An important last-second rally by ME’s Holly Fossa got her past HW’s Olivia Horgan and into sixth place.

Hamilton-Wenham wins tie breaker in 2014 EMass Division 5 XC over Newburyport

Nick Carleo cruises home with the D5 title by 44 seconds

(Wrentham MA) Senior Jack Blatchford turned out to be the key runner for Hamilton-Wenham at Saturday’s EMass Division 5 Cross Country Championships.

Jack finished 40th but after the totals of the first five runners for both HW and Newburyport were 72 the cross country tie-breaker kicked in.

What is that tie-breaker, you ask?  The matchup between both teams’ 6th runner.  On this sunny morning it meant that Jack Blatchford’s 40th place finish bested Newburyport’s Jackson Kesley’s 61th place finish and gave the Generals the EMass D5 Boys’ title.

xc A11 D5 Boys initial totalsWhen the results of D5 Boys was first posted at Wrentham they reported that HW had won, 68-69.  They also posted the list of finishers.  Some untrusting soul decided to add up the totals for themselves and realized that the closing totals should have been, 72-72.  Somewhere I recall a math teacher in my past telling me to check my work!

Newburyport’s Nick Carleo departed from the D5 pack in the first 100 yards and ended up with a 44 second lead over Pentucket’s Alex Demeule when the 5K was over.

Nick will be running in the Division 2 championship on Saturday at Franklin Park.  There will be challengers to push him in that event.

Getting back to the tie between HW and Newburyport.  Watch the battle for 4th place between HW senior Mike Allara and Clippers sophomore Jack Carleo down the stretch.  If that battle ends differently the outcome is different.  You have to remember that in team results no one person ever loses it for their team.  Too many other variables that could have changed things…..but it was exciting.  xc A4 D5 battle for 4th Michael Allara (1672) and Jack Carleo (1723)xc A5 Battle 2xc A6 Battle 3xc A7 Battle 4

Hamilton-Wenham swept boys and girls in D5 while another Cape Ann League team (Manchester-Essex) did the same thing in Division 6.  Expect the CAL to do very well in the Division 2 championships.

Newburyport boys win the 2012 Cape Ann League cross country championship

Sophomore Nick Carleo (Newburyport) in charge from start to finish in CAL championship xc meet.

(Hamilton)  The Newburyport boys cross country team captured the Cape Ann League cross country championship on a very pleasant Saturday morning at Bradley Palmer State Park.

The Clippers had plenty of reason to fear the challenge of their arch-rival Masconomet.  The Chieftains had only lost by five points (25-30) in a CAL meet at the same location on October 15th.

This time, however, the spread was wider (37-46) for Newburyport.

Nick Carleo runs alone to the finish line.

Last year Alex Sullivan (North Andover) ran alone to victory.  This time around it was sophomore Nick Carleo (Newburyport) doing the same thing.

Nick (15:44) had a nineteen second lead at the finish line over Matt Gillis (16:03) of Hamilton-Wenham.  That’s a significant spread in the 3.1 mile Bradley Palmer course.

Nick led from the very early going.  There are state meets ahead and it will be interesting to see how he does against some of the state’s best.

Newburyport won Division 5 last year and Masco coach Pat Mahoney was quoted saying, “that they should win it again this year.”

Max Vye (19th)

A key performer for the victorious Clippers was senior Max Vye.  I saw Max win the JV meet last year.  In today’s meet Max finished 19th.  However, he was Newburyport’s fifth finisher, ahead of two Masco runners and that made a difference in the final point totals.

(Last year I arrived at this event at 10AM because that was when it was scheduled to start.  That enabled me to watch both the JVs races.  This year I figured I’d skip those races and get there at 11AM for the two varsity races.  Silly me!  The varsity races did start at 10AM.  I’ll assume the JV events started at 9AM.  Who knows what might happen next year!)
